Seymour is an intelligent spore plant living in Broken Hills in 2241.
Background[]
The result of the Professor's experiments into applied intelligence testing, Seymour is set apart from other spore plants by having reasoning and cognitive abilities equal to that of a human,[1] and the ability to speak words, better than the level of some humans.[2] Seymour was raised and nurtured from a tiny spore by the Professor, who applied chemical compounds to the plant in order to increase his intelligence, a process that bore fruitful results.[3]
While under the Professor's wing, Seymour grew well acquainted with the scientist's radscorpion, another subject of his that possessed intelligence far greater than a human.[3] The two shared an apparent rivalry of sorts,[4][5] with the plant developing a technique to defeat the radscorpion in a game of chess known as the Flying Liver Attack.[6]
From an early age, however, Seymour realized that showing his full intellect would open the possibility of being cut into pieces and examined by the scientist, an outcome he was not willing to chance.[1] Instead, he "played dumb" enough for the Professor to deem him a failure, prompting the disgruntled scientist to plant him in a crop field by the Old Ghouls' Home.[1][3]
The plant has no dislike for his current accommodation, though he expresses a need to "branch out a little" into a new setting.[7] Additionally, the other plants that occupy the same crop cloud the soil[6] and "aren't much for conversation."[7] He wishes for a new home in the soil by the Old Ghouls' Home.[7]
Feats of intelligence[]
Beyond the ability to speak as a human would, Seymour possesses great knowledge in several areas. He has an intimate, deep-rooted knowledge of chess,[4] enough to impart a technique to defeat the seemingly incontestable radscorpion owned by the Professor.[6] He is aware of the writings of Hegel and is no stranger to discussing Hegelian dialectics.[8] Along with that, he is well acquainted with the field of philosophy.[9] He knows of several other written works, such as The Giving Tree, Jack and the Beanstalk and Catcher in the Rye.[10] He also knows of the Garden of Eden Creation Kit, of which he will discuss with Typhon.[11]
