Lunchboxes are consumables introduced in the Fallout 76 update The Legendary Run.

Characteristics[]

When used, lunchboxes provide a 'Very Well Rested' bonus, a +25% XP bonus, along with a random "party favor" social effect in a small radius, with effects lasting for 60 minutes and 15 seconds. The 'Very Well Rested' bonus can stack up to four times at any given time, increasing the overall bonus of the individual effect, up to a maximum +100% XP bonus.

Each received buff has an individual timer (with the one that has the most time remaining being shown to you under effects) and being affected by another lunchbox resets the duration of one of them if you're already affected by four.

The potential temporary perks are as follows:

Icon Perk Effect
FO76LR Antacids icon Antacids +10% Radiation Resistance
FO76LR Balloons icon Balloons +3.2 jump height
FO76LR Confetti Mess icon Confetti Mess Enemies may explode into confetti when killed
FO76LR Fingertrap icon Fingertrap +5% damage to ghouls and super mutants
FO76LR Gift Bag icon Gift Bag +15 Carry Weight
FO76LR Noisemaker icon Noisemaker +5% damage to robots
FO76LR Plastic Animals icon Plastic Animals +5% damage to animals
FO76LR So Much Cake icon So Much Cake 50% slower hunger rate
FO76LR To-Go Punch icon To-Go Punch 50% slower thirst rate

Locations[]

  • Lunchboxes cannot be traded, dropped, or sold to vendors.
  • Lunchboxes may be purchased for 100 Gold Bullion from Mortimer or Samuel after completing the Vault 79 raid.
  • Lunchboxes may be earned at various S.C.O.R.E. ranks. They are applied automatically into the inventory of the character it was claimed on.

Notes[]

  • Prior to patch 21, opening more than four lunchboxes at a given time would reset the amount of bonus XP. With Patch 21, opening more than four lunchboxes now correctly refreshes the duration of the +100% XP buff instead.
  • Prior to patch 23, if displayed, lunchboxes would clip into the case.

Behind the scenes[]

  • The confetti mess effect for lunchboxes was created by Mark Teare.[Non-game 1] The effect was first created for Fallout 4 during an internal game jam.[Non-game 2] Teare wanted to make a blood-free version of the game for his young children, so that they could see what their father had been working on. The effect replaced the blood and gore from killing enemies with confetti, and even included a voice-over of his son laughing, that replaced the gib sound effect. Other developers were somewhat creeped out by the comic violence and the kid laughter.[Non-game 3] However, the effect was later reworked into its Fallout 76 version, removing the laughter and applying it to the new lunchbox mechanic.
  • When a lunchbox is opened, the confetti animation plays out in either a "Z" formation or an "S" formation. According to Teare, this is a tribute to his two children, Ziggy and Simon, who appear as drawings on the inside of Fallout 4's Vault-Tec lunchbox.[Non-game 4]
