Officer Jack Dimwiddy was an overzealous policeman in the Monongah Police Department before the Great War.
Background[]
Officer Dimwiddy responded to a call from Mrs. Claybourne, who had spotted a strange animal on her property. Because she was frightened of the creature, Mrs. Claybourne had equipped a loaded shotgun. Citing "standard procedure," Officer Dimwiddy ran across her front lawn, broke down her front door, sweeped her legs and disarmed her. Even though Mrs. Claybourne was 91 years old and balancing the shotgun on her walker, Dimwiddy seemed satisfied with his behavior, especially after Mrs. Claybourne called him a "dumbass, psycho cop" from her hospital bed, recovering from a broken hip. After investigating her residence, Dimwiddy found just one animal track, claiming that the SWAT and crime scene units had trampled all other prints. The incident prompted an investigation from the Officer Oversight Committee, which determined that Dimwiddy had displayed "excessive zeal" but acted within proper force. Chairperson Geraldine Dimwiddy, one of his family members, recommended him for commendation.[1][2]
This behavior was not an isolated incident. After responding to a theft at the local Foods and Goods store, Officer Dimwiddy handcuffed the perpetrator, a child named Johnny "Booger" Wilkins. Johnny was read his rights before being placed in a squad car, where he proceeded to urinate himself and cry for his mother. Johnny was later placed in a holding cell at the police station. His mother retrieved him 37 minutes later and filed a complaint of police harassment, citing the fact that it was the third time Johnny had been arrested that month. Johnny's mother paid 25 cents for the single pack of gum that had been stolen and the manager agreed not to press charges.[3]
When he received a report of livestock blocking traffic, Officer Dimwiddy arrived on scene and shot the "bovine offender" 13 times. While securing the crime scene for the forensics team, the owner of the "suspect" complained to Dimwiddy that "Bessy never did no-one any harm." Because he had admitted to owning the cow, Dimwiddy arrested the farmer, Sam Welch, and put him in his squad car. Additional charges were filed against Sam after he used profane language and threatened Dimwiddy. He was later released on his own recognizance, while warning Dimwiddy that he would never get another drop of milk from his cows.[4]
