The Children of Atom practice a cult known as the Church of the Children of Atom which uses a variety of unique terms. The following is an exhaustive list.

Terms[]

  • Atom - The deity of the Children of Atom, he is present in any and all sources of radiation. Nuclear weapons are extensions of Atom's creation.[1]
  • Atom's Glow,[2][3] Atom's Light,[4][5][6] His Glow,[7] the Glow,[8] Eternal Light,[9][10][11] Holy Radiance,[12] Atom's blessing,[13] Atom's Heat[14] - Radiation that persists in the world, particularly the wavelengths that glow.
  • Atom's blessed village or His sacred village - Megaton.[15][16]
  • Atom's blessing - Any attribute that is perceived to have been a given as a gift by the "deity" Atom. Used as terminology for humans with an innate resistance or immunity to radiation.[17][18][19]
  • Atom's Holy Fire, Atom's transmuting fire - Nuclear detonations.[20][21]
  • Atom's kingdom[22][23] or domain[24] - All territories that are irradiated. Can be used specifically regarding all territory that the Fog covers on Mount Desert Island.
  • Atom's veil - The Fog surrounding the Island.[18][25]
  • Armored angels - Lyons' Brotherhood of Steel soldiers in power armor.[26]
  • baptism - The absorption of radiation to gain entrance into the cult.[27] See also Atom's Glow.
  • Cut content compassath - Encompasses. A contrived, faux-biblical term.[28]
  • Division - Any nuclear explosion that kills those in its vicinity, but delivers them to Atom and commences rebirth instantaneously.[23][29] In context, essentially going to Heaven.[25] See also Great Division.
  • E-Ster - An ancient rite at the time when the Daylight is saved.[30][31][32] Speculated by outsiders to be the name of some god or goddess.[33]
  • Enlightenment - Acceptance of Atom, and the resulting ghoulification/death from radiation.[9][3] See also Atom's blessing.
  • Cut content Eye of Atom - Atom's area of influence. Capitalized. May allude to some specific phenomenon or connotation.[34]
  • Cut content Fission - The first light.[35]
  • Cut content Firmament - The region of the air, sky, or heavens through which the creatures were divided from the earth.[35]
  • Great Division - Specifically the Great War.[1][8] See Division for the broader version.
    • Cut content In a cut passage of scripture called The Great Division, the term refers to the creation of the earth, with the Great War being the "second great division." Conversely, Cromwell views the potential detonation of Megaton as the "second great division."[15]
  • Great Symbol of Atom - The bomb at Megaton.[36]
  • Long Division - The extended wait for another Division, in which radiation is absorbed over long periods of time, rather than in an instant. Deliberate wordplay.[8]
  • Luminescent Mother,[5][37][38] Luminous Mother[10] - Mother Curie III.
  • Mother of the Fog - One of the most holy symbols of the Children of Atom. She is seen as a messenger from Atom himself who acts as a guide to those important to Atom's plans and the future of the religion[39] on the Island.[40]
  • salvation - The continual absorption of radiation.[41][6] See also Enlightenment, and Atom's Glow.
  • Scouring - Removing radiation one has accumulated.[42]
  • scribe - One who writes (or types) in the name of Atom.[43]
  • Second Coming - The potential detonation of Megaton.[44]
  • Sixth Sun - A nuclear detonation which will birth a new sun to replace the dying one.[31]
  • Sun(s) of Atom - A name for glowing ones according to the Apostles of the Eternal Light.[45] See also Sun of Atom.
  • Cut content Tree of Light - Mushroom clouds of the Great War, which irradiated water sources.[46][47]
  • verdant stag - A messenger who once appeared to Brother Devin on the Island.[48]
  • Waters of the Glow[2][47] - Irradiated water. May be blessed by a servant of Atom or collected from holy springs, such as Atom's Spring.
  • Waters of Light,[3][49][14] holy water[5] - Irradiated water, blessed through some sort of chemistry by Mother Curie III. Terms specific to the Apostles.

Atom calls for Enlightenment, the warmth which feeds us. For it is only through Atom's supreme and total Enlightenment that we may attain salvation in Eternal Light."

Forgive me, for I knew not what I was doing... we will spread your word without the use of the holy water... we will return the Aqua Pura to Megaton. It shall be a test: the worthy will seek us out, and finding us they will find the Message of Atom, drinking the Waters of Light in their souls. Yes! I leave you now, Lord. I can not bear to look upon your shining face any longer."

    Confessor Cromwell: "Megaton -- Atom's sacred village. He has chosen this place for the site of his shrine and we have been called. Outsiders ask us 'why did you build a town around a bomb'? To them, I say: The bomb brings the promise of Division and the gift of the Glow. The bomb is us. The bomb is Atom. And thus, we are Atom -- awaiting the day in which each of us gives birth to a trillion new lives."

    Zealot Theil: "Sort of. My parents were settlers, tried to carve out a life for us in the Fog. Moved us all out there when I was just a girl. We made due for a couple of years. Atom's veil hadn't claimed the whole of the island back then. But then... came the storm. A rad storm unlike anything the island had ever seen. Our little homestead didn't have a chance. I was the only one to survive, thanks to my blessing. Atom's blessing. I wandered for days, living off whatever I could scrounge, drinking puddles and salt water. Until I stumbled on a spring. The spring. The vision I had... felt like it lasted for days. I was back in the storm, but I wasn't afraid. I was in control. When I finally came to, I was in Richter's arms. He carried me back here and raised me to serve Atom."

    Zealot Ware: "Atom above, someone else. Look, me and Devin, we weren't born with Atom's blessing like everyone else around here. Rads, they hurt us. I've tried talking to him, but he won't listen to me any more and everyone else in this place thinks what he's doing is a brilliant idea. I-I know we don't know each other, but if you could convince him to quit, I'd owe you. Could give you some anti-rad meds I've cooked up. Recipe, too. Damn handy for folks like us. What do ya say? Talk to him for me?"

Even Far Harbor's so-called savior knew those beasts couldn't be trusted. So at long last, Atom has granted us - you - the chance to return what is rightfully ours. To restore the missing piece of Atom's kingdom once and for all. So tell me. Are you prepared to do what must be done?"

And so, I've been busy blessing this holy water and sharing it with the world."

For my dedication, Atom would send another messenger, who would free me from my shackles once and for all. That, brother/sister, is why I must wait."
    The Sole Survivor: "How do you know your vision of Atom's messenger wasn't just a hallucination brought on by the drugs?"
    Brother Devin: "What if it was? Holy Atom spoke to me. Promised to free me from my weakness. He gave me a task. And I will obey."
