Kate Carter is an Operations Officer and a storm chaser. Kate was portrayed by Daisy Edgar-Jones in the 2024 film Twisters.

The Experiment[]
Kate Carter was a storm chaser working towards her Ph.D from Muskogee State University in Oklahoma, hoping to secure a grant to help her research on "Taming a Tornado". She worked alongside her friends/colleagues Javi, Addy, Praveen, and boyfriend Jeb. Their goal was to deploy barrels of sodium polyacrylate solution into a tornado to weaken it. A nearby tornado forms giving them the opportunity to deploy the solution. While the launch was "successful", the tornado intensifies into an EF5, catching them off guard. Forced to abandon their SUV, they reluctantly take refuge under a bridge where Praveen, and Addy are blown away, and killed by the intense winds before making it to the underpass. Kate and Jeb hide in the uppermost part of the bridge, but Jeb is blown away. After the storm ends, a traumatized and injured Kate wonders in shock until a police officer arrives and rescues her.
Working at NOAA[]
Now, five years later, Kate works as a meteorological operations officer at NOAA in New York City. Still traumatized by her friend's death and experiment failing, she left her past in Oklahoma and rarely calls or goes home. Javi, now with Storm Par, pays her a visit, and they catch up over lunch. Javi invites her to join his team for one week to test a new tornado scanning system in Oklahoma. Initially hesitant, she declines and returns to work. The next day, after waking up from a nightmare, Kate checks her phone and sees news of a recent tornado destroyed town, along with a voicemail from Javi convincing her to reconsider; she agrees.
Going to Oklahoma[]
Back in Oklahoma, Kate reunites with Javi and meets the Storm Par team, including Scott, Javi’s ex-boyfriend, who doubts her abilities. They meet Tyler Owens, a famous YouTube star, who goes live during his storm chasing adventures, and his rambunctious team called the "Tornado Wranglers", considering Boone, a hyper videographer, Dani, a mechanic and saleswoman, Dexter, a scientist and humanitarian and Ben, a London journalist writing a piece on American storm chasing. Kate dismisses them as thrill seeking morons and even misleads Tyler about which direction her and Storm Par are heading.
Chasing Storms[]
On their first mission at a wind farm, two of the scanners are placed, when Javi tries to place the third scanner, Kate suffers a P.T.S.D attack and drives away from the tornado, failing to help Javi set up a scanner. Despite this, the team successfully deploys the scanning system during the next tornado, proving them with the data they were looking for. However, the tornado changes its direction, destroying the scanner and causing Kate and Javi to narrowly escape.
After the ordeal, they drive and assist a nearby town’s recovery after a tornado ravages it. Kate runs into Tyler's team again, still giving them a cold shoulder, especially Tyler who tells her that investor Marshall Riggs is exploiting the disaster for profit. She dismisses this, but before she drives off Lily offers her some provisions, to which she learns that Tyler’s team uses merchandise profits to aid tornado victims and they actually care/understand the reality of storm chasing.
Back at the motel, Kate secretly begins researching Marshall Riggs and Storm Par until Tyler knocks on her door and invites her to a rodeo, so they can "start fresh". Kate begins to bond with Tyler who reveals his first encounter with a tornado, past experience as a rodeo cowboy, and going to college to become a meteorologist. Kate shares that she grew up in Sapulpa, Oklahoma. During the rodeo, a tornado abruptly forms, causing panic, and people to seek shelter. Kate, Tyler, and a small family hide in an empty pool until it leaves. Afterward, Kate confronts Javi about Riggs' unethical actions, leading to an argument in which Javi (in the heat of the moment) blames her for their colleagues' deaths. Distraught, she steals Javi's truck and leaves.
Returning Home[]
Kate goes back to her mother’s farm, where her mother is happy to finally see her but worries about her mental and emotional state. While reminiscing through her projects and notes throughout school in her "work" barn, its reveled that Tyler followed her, and that he knows about her traumatic past. He encourages her to retry the experiment but refuses after having an emotional breakdown. The next morning before Tyler leaves, she asks him to stay and help with the solution. They deduced the initial failure and make the necessary adjustments with data received from an apologetic yet stubborn Javi.
El Reno[]
As a massive tornado forms near El Reno, Kate, Tyler, and their teams rush to help the people there. Javi starts to question Storm Par, disillusioned with Scott and Riggs, and goes to help people in El Reno too. Kate, Tyler, and their teams help evacuate residents. Tyler is trapped by debris but is saved by Kate and Javi. They shelter in a movie theater. Determined to stop the tornado, Kate drives Tyler’s truck directly into the storm and deploys the solution of silver iodide and sodium polyacrylate, dissipating the tornado but gets caught in the overturned truck. The team rescues Kate as the storm calms and rejoice because her experiment worked.
Staying with Tyler[]
At the end of the film, Javi drops Kate at the airport, promising continued research. Tyler hopes she stays, but Kate plans to return to New York. When flights are delayed due to strong winds, Tyler chases after Kate, and she decides to stay a little longer in Oklahoma with him, she back at the field and enjoys Tyler's company, while Ben want to focus on her story.
Trivia[]
- It was revealed that there's a kiss between Tyler and Kate, but it was only in test screening, because of executive producer Steven Spielberg's decision. He felt like this wasn't the end of their story. The final film removes it for teasing for the follow-up in the future.
- After the incident that killed her friends and ex-boyfriend, Kate suffers from P.T.S.D and Survivors' Guilt, has recurring dreams of Jeb, and has a scar on her left leg after a piece of debris scrapes it while she was climbing up to the underpass.
- Kate shares similarities to Jo Ann Harding such as having a traumatic/borderline obsession with tornadoes, wants to spare people from experiencing loss from severe weather, particularly tornadoes, and even wears her exact outfit. She also shares the ability to track a storm's direction and developing tornado like Bill Harding.
