Bookshelves[]

Written books should be able to be stored in bookshelves. Once you put the book, the texture of the bookshelf might change a bit or maybe another remarkable thing should appear.

should it be merged back with "Book and Quill"?[]

Should it be merged back with "book and Quill"? i mean, it makes sense that both are togheter as they are very related. plus, the page is a stub. 201.240.84.227 23:00, 7 June 2012 (UTC)

Written Book Info[]

I have two questions. One, if you clone a written book will the clone have the same story in it that the original had? And Two, if you use a written book to make a bookshelf then will you get that written book back just as it was when you built the bookshelf if you break the bookshelf? I feel that this information should be on the page. Brickticks (talk) 18:02, 21 November 2013 (UTC)

Using the recipe to copy a written book provides 2 copies of the same book, including the text inside (that's the point of the feature). As far as I know, you cannot craft bookshelves out of written books, so your second question doesn't really need answering. Hope this helps. --timrem (talk) 18:10, 21 November 2013 (UTC)

Book size[]

Is there a limit to the number of characters that can be written in a book? I want to port in a Bible :D –Preceding unsigned comment was added by 72.234.60.32 (talk) 21:27, 16 May 2014(UTC). Please sign your posts with ~~~~

There is a limit, but it's big. Each page is stored as a TAG_String, which can hold up to 32,767 characters; each book can contain up to 2,147,483,639 pages, for a total of over 70 trillion characters. I don't have an exact wordcount on the Bible, but estimates are around 3-4 million characters, so it can definitely be done. -- Orthotopetalk 00:15, 17 May 2014 (UTC)

Tattered book?[]

On the page for written books, it says "Copied books of the same generation ("Original", "Copy of Original", "Copy of Copy", or "Tattered") will stack." Tattered books? It doesnt explain tattered books, where do they come from, what is their difference and what is their use? 24.57.126.46 00:11, 8 February 2015 (UTC)

They're currently only available using commands, presumably they'd be what you got if you could copy a "Copy of Copy". I don't know why exactly someone felt the need to shove them in there. Anomie x (talk) 01:24, 8 February 2015 (UTC)
If they're a type of available book, shouldn't we add them to this page? I think we could just have a section about the available commands related to Written Books. SuperDyl19 (talk) 23:57, 11 December 2015 (UTC)

"Signing" Synonymous With "Writing"? Also, Book Length Clarification.[]

Perhaps I am just dim, but in the Writing section, is the word "signing" synonymous with "writing"? That is, is the act of "signing" a book what happens when you write what you want to in it, and then, when you are done and click on "sign", you have written your book and can no longer edit it? That is what I got from the description, but it was a little ambiguous, and I want to make sure I understand. It doesn't talk about actually writing your book, just "signing" it.

Also, on this "Talk" page, under "Book Size", it is stated that books can be up to 2,147,483,639 pages long, for a total of more than 70 trillion characters. However, on the Book and Quill Wiki page, it is stated that books can be up to 50 pages long, possessing a total of 12,800 characters. I am guessing that the referenced Wiki page is correct, but would like clarification on this as well (the comment above is three years old...perhaps something changed since then?). Thank you for putting up with my naivete; new to MC. 97.113.184.191 23:04, 10 April 2017 (UTC)

About book size, both are correct: the in-game limits include 50 pages, 256 characters per page, and other limits, but the technical limits of the NBT file format, which third-party editors have access to, are 2,147,483,639 pages and 32,767 characters per page. – Sealbudsman talk/contr 23:49, 10 April 2017 (UTC)
Thank you, Sealbudsman, for answering my questions, and quickly, too! So much easier when I understand what is going on. ;) 97.113.184.191 23:56, 10 April 2017 (UTC)

About my 'command length' comment[]

Just to be on the safe side I want to back up my edit with a reference. I recently learned of MC-97531 which mentions that commands in books misbehave when they're too long. Mojang themselves explained that this is not a bug, but the commands in a book are merely executed on behalf of the player and in the chat system, thus are affected by the 256 character limit. Figured it made a valid trivia item. - ShelLuser (talk) 19:30, 27 August 2017 (UTC)
