I know this is strange, but if I were to hack it, how does one craft/find it? –Preceding unsigned comment was added by Geckonator4896 (talkcontribs) at 01:55, 31 March 2011‎ (UTC). Please sign your posts with ~~~~

Sign your posts. If you hack it in, I think it would just appear in your inventory. JesusChrist666 00:58, 31 March 2011 (UTC)

Is it a block?[]

Of what I understand is that a Gear is a block, and only the sides against a block will be shown with a gear. Like how grass block hides it's sides when connected to save performance. Then what happens if you place a block where you placed a gear, will it be gone then?Liggliluff 00:22, 1 April 2011 (UTC)

No, it just placed the block against the gear, kind of like when you aim at a ladder and place a block.Toadbert 04:13, 10 April 2011 (UTC)

Original Redstone[]

Notch could have put the gear in to test machines or something like that, because the Wiki says it has the coding of Redstone dust.Jimmyoakmeister 23:46, 9 August 2012 (UTC)

I think it was actually supposed to be implemented, and function as redstone does now (or else they wouldn't have shown it off in a video, and they didn't even finish making the gears), but there were problems, such as there was no way to justify signal inversion. 24.237.30.161 05:06, 22 June 2013 (UTC)

Redstone and gears[]

I think the gears was the original design of the redstone, but notch changed the name and tile. 83.37.68.92 08:28, 7 September 2012 (UTC)

Changing page's name to Cog[]

Cog was the Gear's most recent name. After all, we don't call Emeralds Rubies on the wiki! Crazyal02 (talk) 20:13, 21 August 2014 (UTC)

Yeah, but it never did have a use in game with either name, unlike emeralds. Also, most people looking for this will think it's a gear rather then cog. Either name really works though, since a redirect can be created at the other name. --KnightMiner (t|c) 20:24, 21 August 2014 (UTC)
I'm aware this conversation is over seven years old, but have there been any official references to gears as "cogs"? I've changed all mentions back to "Gear" since everything pointing to a rename was shady and it seems like something completely fabricated, and all relevant texture files refer to it as the gear in every version where present. - User-12316399 (talk)

The gear didn't get removed in inf-20100627.[]

I did some testing, and the gear did not get removed in inf-20100627, but it had been replaced with redstone wire in Alpha 1.0.1_01, and since redstone wire was added in Alpha 1.0.1, it probably means that's the version it got changed, since redstone wire has the same ID as gears. So the page should be changed to say Alpha 1.0.1 - Gears Removed, instead of inf-20100627. It already says that gears were converted to redstone in Alpha 1.0.1, so why would it have been removed in inf-20100627? 188.150.233.83 16:39, 19 May 2020 (UTC)

Gears can be destroyed with water[]

I tested with the gears by placing them on water and they did break.

OtherGear[]

At the bottom of the page, the gallery lists 'OtherGear.png', but I couldn't open it. I tried opening it via the URL, but it said the file didn't exist. Should this be removed? 142.54.28.68 14:13, 12 October 2021 (UTC)

Removed. BDJP (t|c) 14:17, 12 October 2021 (UTC)
