User Creation system

Hello Admins,

I have found a feature in your account creation that can be exploited. In the test to find out if you are a human creating an account I have come to believe that a program could select the pictures in order, skipping the other pictures, so I suggest using a ReCaptcha similar to Wikipedia.

Please correct me if I am wrong. I would love to know more about the user creation safety.

No captcha system is going to be completely foolproof, however, the one we have implemented is the best that we have found that is compatible with MediaWiki software. Given the nature of a wiki, and the overall user account details, we don't feel any additional "security" is required. It is in place mostly to prevent specific types of vandalism (uploading of inappropriate images, etc.) -- Wynthyst Image:User Wynthyst sig icon.png :en:User talk:Wynthyst 22:34, 16 July 2012 (UTC)

Thank you very much for your time.

Just a further note, ReCaptcha was broken by bots in January 2011, and is virtually useless in determining the "humanity" of a user at this point. We originally used ReCaptcha until this occurred and our wikis were overrun with bot registrations. -- Wynthyst Image:User Wynthyst sig icon.png :en:User talk:Wynthyst 23:34, 16 July 2012 (UTC)

Pocket Edition upcoming features

Excessive amount of vandalism in the last few days, by both IPs and registered users. It'll probably die down once the next version comes out, but some level of protection until then would be nice. -- Orthotope 06:56, 18 April 2012 (UTC)

There have been literally dozens edits that have contributed absolutely nothing to that page. I've undone so many revisions on that page as almost all the other pages combined as of late. --Moxxy 15:20, 18 April 2012 (UTC)
There were many disruptive edits and vandalism in the past few days as well. - Asterick6 21:43, 12 May 2012 (UTC)
I can't help but notice that no one has addressed the users making these edits directly. The best way to teach people how to use and edit the wiki properly is to TALK to them. Go to their user talk pages and have a discussion with them, or go to the talk page associated to the disputed edits and TALK about it. I see a lot of requests for protection of pages, but zero attempt to educate and inform users. Page protection should be an absolute LAST RESORT, not a first line of defense. -- Wynthyst Image:User Wynthyst sig icon.png :en:User talk:Wynthyst 05:50, 13 June 2012 (UTC)
Well, I guess could import some message templates from WP to use; that way it might be faster to edit/inform editors. - Asterick6 (talk) 08:27, 15 June 2012 (UTC)

Req: Wiki Table CSS Tweak

[Apologies if this isn't the right place, and please let me know where I should report it instead, thx. --Simons Mith 22:14, 29 June 2012 (UTC)]

Column 1 Column 2 Column 3 Column 4
Col 1, width 12.5% Column 2, long wide text, width <remainder> Col 3, width 12.5% Column 4, images, width 300px

Here's a typical full-width wiki table. Note that compared to the surrounding text it is flush with the text on the left, but inset by about an em on the right. Small as it is, that extra bit of right-hand space would be useful in several places, so can the table be made about an em wider? That would make it the same width as the surrounding text, and then it would line up on both sides. Checking various other tables and box-like entities in the wiki, the table code does appear to be the odd man out.

See also the example below, with a table right next to an image. The gap between table and image is wider than I think it should be. I suspect the right margin on the table isn't quite right. Note how the right-aligned thumbnail is flush right with the text, and that seems to be the case for every right-floating wiki box I have found. 150px

Column 1 Column 2 Column 3 Column 4
Col 1, width 12.5% Column 2, long wide text, width <remainder> Col 3, width 12.5% Column 4, images, width 300px
Setting the table to take up the whole screen will ignore the margin, or you could remove the margin in the particular table you don't want it in; but the margin has to stay there normally so things floating next to it won't look weird.
Also, the margin between the table and the image would be exactly the same even if you removed all the table's margin. When two margins meet they combine, so since thumbnails have a larger margin than the table, its margin is essentially ignored. ultradude25 (T|C) at 02:26, 30 June 2012 (UTC)
I think you may be mistaken about that - I don't believe the CSS box model gives overlaps in the way you describe, but I haven't had a chance to mock up a test to double-check yet. Similarly you should still get margins even if you set an element to full page width. --82.69.54.207 01:19, 2 July 2012 (UTC)
You're wrong in both cases. We use full-width tables in various places on the wiki and the margins are ignored, see this image the table's margin is outside the content div. Additionally, you can clearly see in this image that the table is right up against the thumbnail's margin. You can try removing the right margin from the table and you'll see it stays in exactly the same place. ultradude25 (T|C) at 04:20, 2 July 2012 (UTC)

Vandalism on Dinnerbone

Hiya admins. There's some repeat vandalism going on in Dinnerbone's wiki entry. I was attempting to revert it; however, my edit is being blocked -- "Section removal 2". If you could make the edit and perhaps protect the page, that'd be nice. While I can't verify that Nathan drops a baby Ocelot when killed in Minecraft, I'm sure he doesn't wear ribbons in his hair. :p

Edit: Disregard; seems like Marc actually has a valid account and is just messing with Dinnerbone. :D

Additionally, while I'm new to this Wiki specifically, I have good standing on other wikis, including the English Wikipedia. I don't have hundreds of edits but on the other hand, I'm not a malicious bot or vandal. I was wondering if there was a permission level on this wiki that allows me to override some of the more strict editing rules, such as this one; if so, how would I go about obtaining said permission? Thanks -- SnoFox(t|c) 11:40, 25 July 2012 (UTC)

I've put some comments into the source of the Dinnerbone page to clarify that a bit. --80.134.10.126 12:19, 25 July 2012 (UTC)
Technically no matter which way you look at it, it is vandalism, even if it was done by a Mojang employee. I think we can assume their conversation on Twitter about it was sarcastic just by looking at the way they worded it. I think it should be removed; people reading through would get confused. Hower64 12:26, 25 July 2012 (UTC)
Don't be too serious, because to be consistently with your argumentation you'll too have to delete the columns Special talent, Notes and About: Mojang AB: Employees on the page Mojang. Keep it. Mods page broken

When you try to edit page "mods", it will give you an error and you cannot edit it: The database did not find the text of a page that it should have found, named "Mods" . This is usually caused by following an outdated diff or history link to a page that has been deleted. If this is not the case, you may have found a bug in the software. Please report this to an {{escaped link|Special:ListUsers/sysop|administrator}}, making note of the URL. and when you try to edit a section: Cannot find section You tried to edit a section that does not exist. Fixed. For the record, this isn't the first time this has happened, and most of the active admins *should* know how to fix it (if you're an active admin, you're reading this, and you don't know, just delete and then restore the "broken" page), so if this happens again (whether to the Mods page or some other), you should be able to just say "hey, this page is corrupted again" and an admin will know what to do. ;) User:Dinoguy1000Special:Contributions/Dinoguy1000? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 01:39, 8 August 2012 (UTC)

The mods page is broken again, this time I can't even access it. When I try to go to the mods page via the Main Page or by typing the URL in the browser bar, this comes up:

La base de datos no encuentra el texto de una página que debería hallarse, llamada «Mods» .

La causa de esto suele deberse a un diff anacrónico o un enlace al historial de una página que ha sido borrada.

Si no fuera el caso, puedes haber encontrado un fallo en el software.

Por favor, avisa a un administrador, tomando nota de la URL.

My browser is English, and I don't understand Spanish very well.

Confirming that the Mods page is broken. Not entirely sure why the error page is in Spanish. But with so many mods updating from 1.2.5 to 1.3.2, it's kinda important to have that page up so we can watch as mods get updated. --50.47.130.247 03:21, 20 August 2012 (UTC)

This is a known issue affecting a lot of images; see User talk:Wynthyst#Error creating Thumbnail for some discussion. In my experience, at least, this can be resolved for a given page by purging that page (you can do this by adding ?action=purge to the end of a page's URL; if that results in an error, use &action=purge instead). Could be an imagemagic issue... especially if you've just recently updated the wiki it may have overwritten the localsettings.php file and caused the imagemagic settings to be turned off. It's a problem with the CDN. Other files with + in or other special characters in their name or files that aren't standard image types (SVG, OGG, etc.) either didn't get copied over to the CDN, or it doesn't know what to do with them and just displays an error. I saw it was corrupted too. HotdogPi Come to my page! 19:46, 18 September 2012 (UTC)
Still corrupted. We need faster admins. Hower64 08:27, 20 September 2012 (UTC)

Issues/Weekly

Using {{subst:Known bugs}} produces a issues template for a full release, not a weekly. On the weekly you have to tweak the text and version number in a couple of places. We now have a 12w38a issues page, but the weekly link still points to the older release which claims to be the latest. A clear recipe for confusion. I could fix some of this if I'm not beaten to it, but I can't do it right this minute, so I'm logging the problems here in the meantime. --82.69.54.207 14:58, 20 September 2012 (UTC)

When a new weekly comes out, the Issues/Weekly page gets moved to a named page for that version. The plain Issues/Weekly is for the current version, but no one has made the move yet. I'm not too keen on a change that big and hopefully someone more knowledgeable does it soon before too many 38 issues get mixed in with 37's. --User:Kanegasi User_talk:KanegasiSpecial:Contributions/Kanegasi 15:08, 20 September 2012 (UTC)
Watching what Quatroking did, I have a general idea of how it goes. I'll keep that in mind in the future. Also, I moved 12w37a to Weekly_12w37a to match previous "issue archives". --User:Kanegasi User_talk:KanegasiSpecial:Contributions/Kanegasi 15:59, 20 September 2012 (UTC)
And here's a link to the system proposal if you want to more info. --M0rphzone 04:48, 27 September 2012 (UTC)

Bad Response From Server

Not sure if this is the right place, I've never messed with editing wikis before, but almost every time I try to go to a page I get "bad response from server" and have to refresh several times (anywhere from 5 to 20) to make the page load.

Doors

The following message is given on the Doors page:

Doors cannot be accessed. This is usually caused by a corruption in the latest version of the page and requires the page to be deleted and undeleted to fix it. Please report this on the admin noticeboard, making note of the page name.

I have recieved this error as well. Also the topmost history entry displays this error

Doors (Diff: 372432, 380576) cannot be accessed. This is usually caused by a corruption in the latest version of the page and requires the page to be deleted and undeleted to fix it.

Please report this on the admin noticeboard, making note of the page name.

In the meantime, you can go to the history and click the topmost history entry to see the page.

This guy is just terrible. He is also blanking the user and user talk pages of anyone involved with reverting his edits, along with inappropriate language added. --User:Kanegasi User_talk:KanegasiSpecial:Contributions/Kanegasi 01:44, 27 September 2012 (UTC)
Heyyyy (talkcontribslogsblock log) Is definitely a sock puppet, they show up at the same time. Heffe has also vandalized my page and talk page numerous times. --Moxxy 01:53, 27 September 2012 (UTC)

Vandalizing Far Lands by continuously reverting and adding that YouTube user. There is a pretty old discussion about that YouTube user on Talk:Far Lands but since the only official response on the issue was Wynthyst saying no, I figured the topic was settled. --User:Kanegasi User_talk:KanegasiSpecial:Contributions/Kanegasi 01:40, 27 September 2012 (UTC)

This IP reverted Far Lands again. Please look into it. --User:Kanegasi User_talk:KanegasiSpecial:Contributions/Kanegasi 00:13, 28 September 2012 (UTC)
