Invalid data value leaves2 refers to item forms of the secondary leaves block with damage values outside of the usual range which leaves can usually be obtained in.

Obtaining[]

Without the use of commands, invalid data value leaves2 are unobtainable in the last versions in which they existed without inheriting them from a prior version in which they were obtainable.

Only eight damage variants of the leaves2 block are currently known to be obtainable. Two of these correspond to existing species (0 for acacia and 1 for dark oak), with the other six being invalid data value variants. There is currently no known way to obtain leaves2 items with damage values of 6, 7, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 or 15. Like with all other invalid data value items documented on this wiki, there is also no known way to obtain items with damage values 16 and above, nor -1 and below.

Transmutation[]

Block transmutation with arrows can be used to obtain leaves2 blocks with metadata 2 and 3. These blocks can be mined with shears in 14w21b or earlier to obtain the item corresponding to these blocks. The initial block being transmuted must be acacia leaves from an existing tree which has not been updated, i.e. a leaves2 block with metadata value 0. Dark oak leaves, as well as player-placed acacia leaves or acacia leaves which have received a block update, cannot be transmuted. As such, an acacia tree must be grown in situ within a dedicated transmutation apparatus.

Breaking leaves2 blocks[]

From 14w25a to 14w28a, leaves2 blocks existing in the world will drop invalid data value leaves2 items when broken with shears.[1] Acacia leaves will drop items with a damage value of 4, and dark oak leaves will drop items with a damage value of 5.

From 14w25a to 14w30b, breaking leaves2 blocks with a Silk Touch enchanted non-shears tool will drop different invalid data value leaves2 items:[2] acacia leaves drop damage value 8, and dark oak leaves drop damage value 9.

Invalid data value leaves blocks that exist in the world cannot be broken in 14w25a or 14w25b, as approaching a chunk containing them will crash the game in these two versions. They cannot be broken in 14w26a or later, as such versions treat invalid blocks as air.

Usage[]

Placement[]

This section is missing information about placement behaviour: did placed IDV leaves just act like 0 to 3, or did the placed leaves reflect the behaviour of the block that dropped them?.
Please expand the section to include this information. Further details may exist on the talk page.

Conversion to future versions[]

In 1.13 (17w47a) onwards, distinguishing between block and item variants using metadata and damage was formally abolished. As a result of this, existing items would be converted over to the new ID system automatically. Invalid data value leaves behave anomalously in that instead of converting to their respective parent species, they all convert to acacia leaves instead. Despite these items often being unknowingly collected and stored in older versions in such a way that conversion like this would end up being undesirable, Mojang have decided to not fix this.[3]

History[]

Java Edition
1.7.213w43aA second block ID is now used for two newly-implemented species of leaves. Invalid data variants exist as a consequence of how block and item metadata is handled.
As a result of this, due to only two spots for species being taken, two more remain which are unfilled, resulting in invalid data values. These can be obtained via block transmutation and picked up.
Leaves2 items with damage values 2 and above are named "Acacia Leaves" regardless of the species they actually represent.
1.814w10aThe item forms of all invalid data value log2 blocks have changed; those corresponding to rotated logs now map textures correctly but the lighting behaves rotated as well, and the remaining unused variants now are 2D in item form.
Leaves2 blocks in the world with metadata corresponding to unused species now have no model Missing Model JE2. The particles of said blocks are still that of the leaves they previously were.[verify]
14w17aLeaves2 items with data values outside of the expected range now have the correct name corresponding to the data value it represents, rather than all sharing the name "Acacia Leaves". The items which do not correspond to valid species data (2, 3, 6, 7, 10, 11, 14 and 15) are named "Oak Leaves", despite oak leaves being a completely different block ID.
14w25aMissing Model (inventory) JE1 With the introduction of data-driven item models, any item with a data value outside of what is accepted by the game has no model to point to, resulting in use of the missing item model.
Leaves2 blocks corresponding to the two empty species slots now cause the game to crash if approached. It is therefore impossible to interact with these blocks to obtain damage values 2 or 3, nor any potential higher damage values allowed by this snapshot.
Leaves2 items with damage values 4 and 5 can be obtained by breaking acacia and dark oak leaves with shears, and damage values 8 and 9 can be obtained via the use of Silk Touch.
14w28bLeaves2 items with damage values 4 and 5 are no longer obtainable from breaking leaves2 with shears.
14w30aInvalid data value leaves2 items, alongside other invalid data value items, now appear the size of a full block when held in third person or by another player or mob.
14w30cLeaves2 items with damage values 8 and 9 are no longer obtainable with Silk Touch tools.
1.915w31aMissing Model (inventory) JE2 The missing model's inventory appearance has changed, resulting in the appearance of invalid data value leaves2 items also changing.
The items also appear the size of a full block when held in first person and when dropped on the ground, and also appear larger than before in an item frame.
1.1317w43aMissing Model (inventory) JE3 The missing texture has changed, resulting in the appearance of invalid data value leaves2 items also changing.
17w47aNumeric IDs for blocks and items have been completely removed from the game, with different species of leaves being given their own string IDs. As a result, invalid data value leaves2 items have been "removed" as any such item now converts cleanly into acacia leaves.

Issues[]

Invalid data value leaves2 are an issue, and due to their removal, can be considered already fixed.
