The Silver Shroud was a multimedia franchise centered on the fictional character, the Silver Shroud and his escapades of fighting villains in a modern-day Boston. It has multiple references in the Fallout series.

Background[]

Radio show[]

The franchise achieved its initial popularity as a radio drama broadcast on Galaxy News Radio that aired in the Boston area of Massachusetts before the Great War. The program was penned by Tina Hopkins for Hubris Comics and Galaxy News Network, consisting of 420 episodes (419 regular and one holiday special).[1] Crossovers with other properties were created, such as the 2071 Thanksgiving episode The Silver Shroud vs. Captain Cosmos.[2] It also included a number of minor characters, such as Mister Abominable from Episode 83,[3] the Silver Shroud's butler Jarvey Blake, a man named Rhett Reinhart as a close ally of the Shroud,[4] or the Shroud's love interest, a heroine known as the Mistress of Mystery.

In Fallout 4, one can listen to six episodes of the radio drama by traveling in or near Goodneighbor and listening to Silver Shroud Radio. They cover one storyline involving the Silver Shroud and the Mistress of Mystery teaming up against the Mechanist.

Episodes
Number Name
1 A Slaying in Scollay Square
2 The Mystery of Mayor Murphy
3 In the Parlor of Mysteries
4 Fat Fahey’s Folly
5 Into the Robot’s Den
6 The Mechanist Unmasked!

Comics[]

Hubris Comics expanded the Silver Shroud's mythos by featuring him in the team-up comic series Unstoppables where he joined the titular team along with other Hubris characters including the Mistress, The Inspector, Manta Man, and Grognak as they worked together to battle various enemies such as Dr Brainwash, Commie-Kazi, Ragnarök, the Mechanist, and the Diabolicals.

TV show[]

Although the radio play was a staple of Boston popular culture, by the 2070s, television was beginning to outpace radio as the popular medium for consumers.[5] Intent on capitalizing on this culture shift, a television show based on the radio play was planned, produced by Aaron Babowski.[6][7] Shortly after production began, however, the first of several hurdles came as the original production crew of the radio play butted heads with Babowski over creative decisions for the show, with Babowski retaliating by trying to antagonize the lead writer into resigning. Some of Babowski's changes included giving the Silver Shroud a British butler and casting the Mistress of Mysteries as a "breathy, airy, young blonde," as well as including a monkey character. Shannon Rivers, the iconic voice actress for the Mistress of Mysteries during the radio play, was initially set to reprise her role, even going so far as to take combat training and had been doing line-readings and lighting stand-ins before finding out she had been recast, which caused a new round of friction with the show's producers. Keith McKinney supposedly had an inside track to get casted as the Shroud thanks to his agent, though it is unconfirmed if this actually occurred.[8]

Ultimately, the show's release never came to fruition, as production on the first episode was cut short due to the onset of the Great War. What is known is that the opening scene was to include a shot of the Boston skyline with iconic buildings such as Mass Fusion and Trinity Tower, then transitioning to a scene of various mobsters gambling before the Shroud made his appearance firing upon them.

Kent Connolly: "Reliving old memories. Like Thanksgiving 2071. Ma made a 12 pound turkey. And then we all listened to, "The Silver Shroud vs. Captain Cosmos." Even pa was there. You ever listen to the Silver Shroud? That's who we need. No matter how bleak things got he'd save the day."

Kent Connolly: "He was a cave man. Got frozen in an iceberg from prehistoric times. When they thawed him out he went on a rampage. It took the Shroud and Manta Man combined to take him down. Boy, if you just woke up. The world these days, must take some getting used to."
