Confederacy[]
I'd like it on record that as much as I full-throatedly disagree with any attempts to whitewash the idea that this faction was intended as anything other than meanspirited mockery of the LGBT community, I do actually agree with the stance that the CSA connection is a stretch; I've outlined my reasoning before but maybe not here necessarily:
- Bigots don't typically try to own their targets by comparing them to bigots, or at least they didn't before modern internet discourse
- The CSA is and was almost exclusively referred to as the Confederacy or Confederate States as opposed to a "Confederation"; the latter use of the term is generally more connected to the Articles of Confederation in the mind of the average American
- While the LGBT community's close connection to minority groups and the civil rights movement is well documented and mainstream knowledge now I'm not certain it was something that the average homophobe would be aware of in '98 (and even then, it seems like a weird way to go about harping on it if they were -- you'd think that they'd compare them to the black panthers or some other "scary bad" civil rights group if so, not the oppressive, racist government that partially spurred the civil rights movement into existence)
That said, I won't disagree that it's an unfortunate pebble resting atop the massive cairn of homophobia that is the Rainbow Confederation --DirtyBlue929 (talk) 03:11, 18 May 2024 (UTC)
