Rip Daring is the protagonist of the Astoundingly Awesome Tales series of the same name, produced before the Great War. He is the subject of a radio play and board game.
Background[]
In the Rip Daring franchise from Astoundingly Awesome Tales, the eponymous hero is a cryptid hunter who exudes machismo, patriotism and overconfidence. In his hunts for strange and unnatural wildlife from local legends, Rip is accompanied by Guinevere, a sarcastic field medic, and Percival, a knowledgeable Mister Handy who is often the butt of Rip's jokes. Rip is absent-minded and occasionally foolish, but is nonetheless brave and always gets the job done in his action-packed adventures. His only fear is that of needles, which is the source of Guinevere's amusement when he requires any sort of shot for medical treatment. Rip's personal weapon is the Cold Shoulder, his personally modified shotgun. It is most famous for its use of cryo rounds, though he has used pyro rounds in the past. Rip also utilizes his own "Rip Daring patented" jetpack.[1]
The Rip Daring radio play in which he is featured had at least 75 episodes, featuring Rip and his companions hunting for new cryptids. Some of his targets include:[1]
- Appalachian Not-Deer (episode 23)
- Bulgasari (episode 12)
- Texan Chupacabra (episode 54)
- Japanese Gashadokuro (episode 75)
- Dullahan (referenced in episode 12)
- Kelpie (referenced in episode 12)
- Bigfoot/Sasquatch (referenced in episode 12)
- Skunk-Ape (referenced in episode 12)
- Yuki-onna (referenced in episode 75)

Behind the scenes[]
- SkyBox Labs developer Ryan White concepted Rip Daring and was a writer on the radio play.[Non-game 1]
- Rip is voiced by Kyle McCarley in the Rip Daring radio play, added to the game on Pirate Radio with the Mutation Invasion update. McCarley recorded for Rip in either November or December 2022, and was directed by Phillip Reich.[Non-game 2][Non-game 3]
- McCarley described Rip as a "Zapp Brannigan-type character" that was one of his most fun roles to portray. He also took inspiration in his performance from an original World of Warcraft character in a Warcraft radio play he co-wrote while in college.[Non-game 4]
- The scoreboard art of Rip sitting in a rustic hunter's throne in front of a fireplace bears close resemblance to the "Gaston" scene from the 1991 animated film Beauty and The Beast. The character of Gaston also shares many similarities with Rip Daring, with both being overly machismo hunters with more brawn than brains.

- ā Ryan White on LinkedIn: ""It is time yet again for another exciting journey with Rip Daring, Cryptid Hunter extraordinaire!"
Fallout 76 recently saw the release of Rip Daring and the Cryptid Hunt and this was a monumental occasion for me. I was able to help take the theme and characters from being an idea I pitched, to something that is now a brand within the larger Fallout universe.
This was also an exciting update, because along with releasing fun rewards, beautiful artwork, and an incredible board game, I got to write and release a series of 1950s styled Radio Plays. Working with the voice actors to bring these characters to life was a highlight of my career, and the fanbase has been loving the extra care we put in, calling the plays some of the funniest ones in game.
So tune in dear listeners for action, adventure and most importantly, wordplay!" - ā Fallout 76 with the voice of Rip Daring (32:11) [dead link]
