The Great Salt Lake is a mentioned-only location in Fallout: New Vegas and its add-ons Honest Hearts and Lonesome Road.

Background[]

Known as a lake located in the pre-War state of Utah, following the Great War, the ruins of Salt Lake City and the post-War settlement of New Canaan formed in the ruins of Ogden lie along its coast. The area became a contested territory, largely occupied by the White Legs raider tribe (so named for painting their legs white for camouflage amid the light-colored expanse of the dried-up lake) with some friction with the neighboring 80s tribe.

War for Zion[]

Sometime before 2281, the frumentarius Ulysses was sent by Caesar to the Great Salt Lake to deliver a message to the White Legs. He uplifted the tribe as a threatening army to throw against the New Canaanites, intending both to cripple their supply routes through Utah that support the New California Republic and to kill Joshua Graham, the former Malpais Legate that once served Caesar.[1] The sacking of New Canaan occurred soon after, with the majority of the Mormon residents murdered and the few survivors scattered to Zion Canyon.[2][3][4]

Notes[]

At Nelson in the Mojave Wasteland, Dead Sea mentions the Great Salt Lake as his place of origin.[5]

Appearances[]

The Great Salt Lake is mentioned in Fallout: New Vegas and its add-ons Honest Hearts and Lonesome Road. It was also intended to appear in Van Buren, the canceled Fallout 3 by Black Isle Studios.

Behind the scenes[]

Great Salt Lake is a real-world landform in the state of Utah.

  1. Ulysses log: Y-17.22
  2. The Courier: "Wait, what? New Canaan was wiped out? How?"
Follows-Chalk: "That's what Joshua said. White Legs came down from Great Salt Lake in force - fell on New Canaan before they could mount a defense. Joshua found some of the survivors led by a man named Daniel. Most of them have fled the valley, but Daniel stayed on with the Sorrows tribe. He and Joshua have been arguing over whether to stand and fight the White Legs or take the Sorrows and the Dead Horses out of the valley."
    (Follows-Chalk's dialogue)
  3. The Courier: "If what you believe is true, he'll pay for it later. The Sorrows don't need to see you do this."
Joshua Graham: "I want to take from them what they took from me, from my family. In this life. I want them to suffer. I want all of them to die in fear and pain. I want to have my revenge. Against him. Against Caesar. I want to call it my own, to make my anger God's anger. To justify the things I've done. Sometimes I tell myself that these wild fires never stop burning. But I'm the one who starts them. Not God. Not them. I can always see it in my mind. The warmth and the heat. It will always be a part of me. But not today. [SUCCEEDED] Go. Get out of here. Go back. Back to the Great Salt Lake."
    (Joshua Graham's dialogue)
  4. Joshua Graham: "There. That's it. It's finished. When they hear what happened here, the White Legs will crawl back to their Great Salt Lake. If Caesar doesn't kill them, they'll wither and die like the cursed mongrels they are. Come. Let's find Daniel. Tomorrow will be here soon. And there is still much work to be done."
(Joshua Graham's dialogue) Note: This line is spoken if Salt-Upon-Wounds is executed during the quest Crush the White Legs.
  5. The Courier: "Who are you?"
Dead Sea: "I am a loyal servant of Caesar, and I thank my good fortune for the day that he plucked me as a babe from the shore of the Great Salt Lake. For five years I have had the privilege of serving as a Decanus. If fortune continues to smile upon me, I will serve him until I draw my last breath. I hope that satisfies your curiosity about me, because I won't waste any more of Caesar's time talking about myself."
