Sarcasm. Very clever. I need information on locations outside of DC. Since I am occupied, you can provide it for me.

Knight Captain Gallows is an elite member of Lyons' Pride of the Brotherhood of Steel, found at the Citadel in Fallout 3. His real name is Irving.[1]

Background[]

One of the most enigmatic members of the Lyons' Pride, Knight Captain Gallows is a quiet, reserved man who specializes in reconnaissance and stealth assignments,[2] with an official combat specialization of "special operations."[3] He gives the other members of the Pride a wide berth and keeps to himself, often disappearing for days at a time, which only adds to the air of mystery that surrounds him.[Non-game 1] Whenever he returns, he does not share a word with his peers, answering only to Sarah Lyons. While most of the Pride members consider it almost funny, some, like Knight Captain Dusk, treat it as evidence of Gallows' untrustworthiness.[4]

For his part, Gallows is simply utterly ruthless and no-nonsense: he focuses exclusively on his job as a soldier and simply refuses to fraternize with other members of the unit, as doing so gets in the way of combat, such as "crazy" solo night ops.[5] Nobody even knows his first name, which prompted Paladin Glade to start a betting pool: whomever figures out Gallows' first name gets the pot. The paladin does not hold any ill will towards Gallows. He understands that Gallows does not like to talk, though he figures there is something wrong with Gallows, and respects him. It has not stopped him from starting a betting pool that would be awarded to the first person who can figure out Gallows' first name.[6][7]

Gallows is amused by the pool's existence for the most part,[8] but pays it little mind. He is actually somewhat tired of the game and is ready to reveal his real name (Irving) to a person who can present the right argument.[1] He focuses on fighting threats to the Brotherhood, like the super mutants and the Enclave. He has a simple philosophy: whatever is born, lives, and dies: by stabbing, shooting, strangling, or any other means, and that is the end of the story.[9][10] His ruthlessness and nihilistic attitude allows him to fill a role that nobody else can, and Sentinel Lyons certainly appreciates his methods.[11]

Other interactions[]

  • Gallows is a very curt person. The player can improve his disposition and earn a positive modifier for the Speech check that allows them to figure out his real name by staying silent during their first meeting.

Notable quotes[]

Appearances[]

Knight Captain Gallows appears only in Fallout 3.

Behind the scenes[]

  • One of Gallows' goodbye lines is "Hooah, soldier." However, in the voice line itself, after this is said, the voice actor (Pete Papageorge) also attempts to say "Stay safe," but stumbles over the word and mispronounces "safe" as "strafe." He then requests to do the line "once again." This blooper accidentally made its way into the final game. Another of Gallows' goodbye lines is "Stay safe, stranger," indicating that he was likely attempting to read the next line, made a mistake, and the recording of it was erreoneously left over in the previous line.
  • Judging by unused topics associated with Gallows, it seems that he would have offered a quest similar to Geomapping with Reilly, rewarding the player with a selection of ammunition in return for discovering locations outside of D.C., citing his lack of time to recon the wastelands. The entire dialogue tree is commented out in the release version.[12][13]
  • Gallows' face is normally unseen, unless the player removes his helmet. He also appears in the ending slides.
  • Like other members of the Pride, Gallows is based on Steven Spielberg's Saving Private Ryan, and the reserved professionalism of Capt. John Miller. The betting pool in Fallout 3 parallels the betting pool in the movie, where members of the battalion pooled their money to award to the first person who would manage to learn who Captain Miller was before the war (a schoolteacher).

Knight Captain Dusk: "I don't trust him. I know, I know, I should take faith in my brother, but he disappears for days out into the Wastes. He comes back without a word. He only reports to Sentinel Lyons, and doesn't tell the rest of us what he's up to. I can't trust a soldier like that. The other guys, they think it's a joke. Glade's even got a betting pool going to find out Gallows' real name. A betting pool. Honestly..."

Tell you what, though -- he's the meanest son of a bitch around here. All business. The rest of us, we get our R and R in. Not Gallows. There's even a betting pool on who can find out his real name. Gallows is the Pride's scout and stealth expert. He's a quiet, kind of creepy man who isn't much liked by the Brotherhood members beyond the Pride. It's been said that if an enemy is in the field and sees Gallows, he's already dead. Gallows tends to disappear from time to time, which only adds to the mystery surrounding him. But it is well known among the other members of Lyons's Pride that Gallows is actually out hunting and killing Super Mutants. At least, they HOPE they're Super Mutants...."
