It would require a lot of connection to the minecraft database. People that want offline servers wouldn't be too pleased about this.
Additionally there would be no possibility of file editing or customization, as the server would be based out of the client.
I recently hired a VPS to host Minecraft on and you realize quite quickly that OP's idea is not feasible for Mojang to provide.
The example used by OP, Halo; has as someone stated "short and sweet" games. the match is not a server its a separate instance running on a random ISP's server (COGS, Internode, GameArena ect.) or in the odd case a dedicated server.
Because minecraft maps are usually persistent and perpetually growing. This/These server/s would have to be huge and or possibly limited up time for maps, in other words when the map gets too big it may have to restart fresh to run efficiently.
Mojang could however provide a VPS like service that rents for a nominal fee the means and service to host Minecraft maps. But a cost benefit analysis would probably reveal that this may become a fruitless endeavor but it to me seems like the only viable option for this type of game.
Although an in built server list new players can look up servers would be very good. Servers would have to have the ability to meter who they want in to their server though, like pass worded servers a no brainer feature really. Also IIRC I think that there is a third party program that does this already but don't quote me on that.

Look at WoW. You can do private servers (both hosted ones and on your own computer) and use different mod types or addons. All from a game on official servers. Same with Diablo 2, Starcraft, Warcraft, Age of Empires, Warhammer, and many other games.

I'm actually against making hosting easier.
Simply because of server spamming.
At least with the current system, it is required that the creator has an IQ measurably higher than a broomstick.
But with the suggested system, a server could be created if you drop your mouse.
Other have already explained how terrible most of the ideas are, so I've nothing to add other than a small idea building off of the following in BurntBiscuits' post:

Then a list on the MC client could list all 'public' servers. The IPs of these servers would be forwarded to Mojang's server by the MC server software, which would then be shown on the list, along with location information (Which can be deduced from one's external IP). If you don't want anyone to find your server, simply set it to private (Which would be default). This would help servers grow much more easily and would only require a database be set up on Mojangs side (Yes, I realise the database would be large, but not so much that it would create a massive dent in Mojangs funds).
I really see no use in the "location" feature, and instead perhaps that field could be used to display the server's ping with an option to sort the list by categories? This should make it just as easy for users to find local[-ish] servers with low ping and it requires very little calculation.
Of course, this is all a pipe dream; I have no idea what the costs to Mojang would be to maintain a server for this and in any case it'd be a recurring cost whereas they [currently?] have no recurring income. Minecraft brings in the money, sure, but that's a one-time payment from each user. Scrolls seems to aim to get around that using paid DLC and perhaps after it's been released then Mojang can work on serverlists and buddy list servers and all that using the income from the DLC to fund the upkeep costs?
I do agree with you that we should have a simpler server system, but Minecraft multiplayer isn't a completed feature. It is supposed to be in a buggy testing stage, and that is why you use server ips. I'm sure that once the game is done Notch will implement this. But I will give you some of these and a few of these and maybe even a for the mockups and support.
Typing in an ip address is not strictly required (though this is really what the COMPUTER uses anyway, also i wish more people knew this). Just get a free dynamic address (like whatever.dyndns.org) from DynDNS (at dyndns.com) and associate it with your server's ip using their online tool and use their auto update client if you router can't do it for you.
While I indeed would like SMP to be more social, I would like to keep some of that ******** away from the game entirely.
I don't want 5000+ servers being created every hour at will by people who do not know what they are doing. I also do not like the idea of everything being so damn social. I like how servers are run now: the server has a forum of it's own and has a competent staff to keep it all running correctly. I feel this suggestion (and others like it) will DESTROY the **** out of Minecraft. I also am not very fond of 25-35% of this community and feel that they would, inevitably, **** the living hell out of this type of system by creating servers they have no business running, being lost in yet another ridiculous friends list-type deal, and watering down the system I have come to know and love.
Perhaps a friends system should be added, but not the server option. Too much goes into managing a server and a bagillion servers created by the masses who shouldn't run a server in the first place would just be too awful to comprehend.
Leave server management to the people that know how to do it.
OMG yes, best idea i have ever heard of, i've ben looking for something like this.
please notch implement this, please, no more wolves or colored blocks.

This could make multiplayer more popular, because of it's simplicity.

Like what you see? Give me some reputation
How the hell do you drop a mouse?
Rather easily if your deskspace is limited?
