The problem of this is that private servers are supported only by their own computer, not like Halo where you can set a game up on an infer-structure. Maybe when the game is finalized though.
...this needs a warning about RAM/CPU usage. Without it, dumb people with junk computers will just attempt to make a server, then suddenly find themselves with a crashed computer and have no idea at all why. If Mojang gets enough money, they MAY be able to pay for having a big server hosting place host all those servers, so you don't have to deal with the lag of running a nondedeicated or old-computer-based server, especially if you have to pay a small amount each month per server for a hosted-for-you server. Or have an option for both. Of course, even that way, noobs will whine about not being able to have a lag-free, easy server for free, but creepers gonna creep, whiners gonna whine I guess.
This is not a good idea, as all it does is add an ingame GUI. You cannot get people to access your server, without forwarding a port to access your computer. It would only work if notch bought thousands of server cpu's and forwarded each and every one of them. It would be incredibly expensive, and the only way he would do that, is if you have to pay him more for the hosting.
i agree, no matter how you set it up you will need to do some port forwarding.
YEEEEES This would be VERY VERY helpful than me having to go to the internet and find servers but find out theres whitelist, with this, itll tell me there! YESH
Im sorry, this is KINDA a good idea, but first, you compare this to halo or other FPS games like that, THATS NOT WHAT MINECRAFT IS ABOUT, i mean really server hosting really isnt THAT hard, but it shouldnt be really easy either, i mean we don't want all the little kids (yes i am 14 but i am VERY smart) creating their own servers for themselvs just so the can spawn stuffs... i mean i wouldn't mind it because it was a little hard creating my own server, but it really isn't hard enough to resort to this. Also, i mean if servers were this easy to make, then everybody could have thier own and that would kinda ruin the fun, so I dont necessarily like this idea but, its not the worst ive seen (TRUST ME ON THAT ONE).

Well, on the technical side, this wouldn't allow advanced server modding with Bukkit, etc. Also, the server has to be run somewhere, and it will probably end up being on your computer, which with most of you will cause massive lag. I also think that having servers easily being created/removed like this would spawn a bunch of servers that last about a week. In my opinion, if you can't port forward, you have no business running a server.
On-Topic: I completely support this because it's much easier for new players to make some servers.
Suggestion: There should also be a GUI or something to use if you want to add a plugin to the server.

maybe you can name your wolves after different parts of your computer like I did. [iapprove]
Good job, power button!
USB PORT, GET OVER HERE NOW!
Time for dinner, video card!
Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter!!!! Look at what you did!!!!!
I like it, simply because I just want to play with my brother on our own server, and I'm not a techy who can figure this stuff out. Like I've read every guide that shows how to set up a server and I'm still confused......and something about Java won't work when I try to do like the second step of server making. I think this idea would help out a lot. :biggrin.gif:
I'm back motherf-...oh, sorry, family game, forgot. [;
Alright, so, tonight i'll be updating the post with a few great suggestions by you guys. Who knows? Maybe a Mojang employee is reading this over right now.
[I just want to inform you all that this is not a mod I intend on even trying to figure out. This is for Mojang to take a look at, and maybe jack some ideas from. Although, if anyone is interested on working on the GUI's to make them look more Minecraft-esque, then shoot me a pm and get yo' ass in gear.]
Also, reading over the post looking for ideas, I ran across a few objectionable comments, such as:
-"It will make it so kids can make servers to play with friends"
-"IT WILL RUIN MINECRAFT!"
-"AAAAHHH, KIDS WHO DONT KNOW PROPER ADMIN SKILLS WILL MAKE SHITTY SERVERS!"
Now, I understand the pattern here. You guys probably have servers of your own. I get that you put a lot of work into it. I understand that kids are sometimes immature and grief and whatever, but we all have to take a step back for a second and realize that Minecraft is a game. Games are supposed to be easy to grasp and features in the game are supposed to be straightforward. If you're scared of a kid making a server to play with their buddies, its simple, DONT JOIN THE SERVER.
If this gets implemented, I hope to have a global ban-list, much like we already do, but I want temporary bans from SMP if griefing gets out of hand, and maybe a perma-ban if probation is broken.
Awesome ideas, keep it up! I really wanted to make a small, 3 person private server, but it got too complicated for me. This would make it a hell of a lot easier.
Otherwise, I approve.
Me on Minecraft:

I do like the LAN idea tho.
For a LAN server all you have to do is download the server .jar and run it
