If this was implemented it would sure clear up the server adminstration board. However (im 90% sure) there is no way to host a server on your own computer and have people from outside your network connect to it without portforwarding. Like someone else said, most games online host the game on their own servers, but the way minecraft is designed thats not really feasible because these servers can get huge.
Unless they limited the space you get on servers created through this system, probably to something small so all those servers people will most definiately be creating wily nilly will fit on Notches servers. Even if tehy limit the space it would be a step forward, as long as they kept the current system in place for those of us that want "unlimited" space to grow or do what we want with. While letting us have servers hosted the current way show up on the server browser.
It's good, except the max players might not work because of overload, but I might be wrong.

I'm actually against making hosting easier.
Simply because of server spamming.
At least with the current system, it is required that the creator has an IQ measurably higher than a broomstick.
But with the suggested system, a server could be created if you drop your mouse.
That said, I would like a browser.
Then maybe something can be implemented to avoid that instead of not adding easier server creation all together. If the server you made isn't active for more than a few days, it's deleted.
That last point was brilliant.
@Msj2705 Yeah that's true, but what if you really wanted to make a small server for your friends, or a planned out server with people already on the waiting list? Then your screwed. But I have to take your point: server spamming would be an issue, but the inactive server idea is pretty useful, or maybe another solution?

The server deletion would do just fine. I'll update the topic with update 8 later this evening running through **** like that.
hell yeah. i agree 99.9999999999999999999999999999999999999%-100% <--- its a hard to decide (i think its a good idea but spamming could be a prob but still it is awsome)
As it is right now smp is one of the most fun aspects of multiplayer............BUT ITS A ROYAL PAIN IN THE ASS!!
this will fix that entirely and I hope it gets read by a mojang employee.

I think most of them will have whitelists like it is now. (which kinda sucks because sometimes you want to be able to click on a server and play instead of coordinating with server admins.) The ones without whitelist will be really tough as far as griefing/spamming goes.
you should also be able to filter servers by different things like modded/unmodded, region, whitelist, etc.
