My recent edit fixed some grouping problems, but there are still more out there. Please, fix them. 66.57.19.80 20:15, 22 January 2013 (UTC)

Screenshots?

It would be good if we could get screenshots, or, even better, video examples for all or most of these. CruelNoise 22:06, 14 September 2010 (CDT)

I agree that there should be screenshots because it would be easier for some of the minors that play to have a visual or video like with the piston pitfall trap. Milkman9 15:54, 27 August 2011 (CDT)

Redstone Melting Ice

Redstone torches don't melt ice. I use them to light up my ice house. Was there a recent update that made them melt ice? (I use an old Minecraft.exe) EDIT:--PurpleKiwi 22:??, 27 October 2010 (UTC)

not sure, but I'd say so. I mean, they have a video of it, and you cannot link it to anything other than redstone. the interval was irratic, and it started/stopped at the times the switch was pulled. so, it seems impossible to not melt it.--Kizzycocoa 22:52, 27 October 2010 (UTC)
Forgot your sig there, PurpleKiwi. Also, yeah, I've done a test in which I left a redstone torch sitting next to an ice block for two minecraft days, the only place for water to flow was into the torch. When I came back the torch was still there. Even so, that video is pretty convincing. CyborgDragon 17:53, 27 October 2010 (CDT)
I have a winter world the current Alpha version (1.1.2_01) and redstone torches have not melted the ice. I've set them there for quite some time (~5 mins) surrounded by ice with no melting. The video shows 1.1.2 (no _01), is that a slightly older version that perhaps behaved differently? --Lordebon 18:35, 27 October 2010 (CDT)
I can now confirm that redstone torches do not melt ice, at all. It is the light levels that actually melt the ice, and the sky light, having it's own fancy light levels, won't, even though it's the brightest light. As for older versions with ice melting, no, they did not have ice melting from redstone torches. CyborgDragon 23:44, 27 October 2010 (UTC)

Traps That Don't Work D:

There were lots of traps here that didn't work. We should test out all of the traps before we use them. Maybe we can even have an efficiency rating for each one. Landmines aren't efficient at all, but you can make lots of them (and hide them easily) very quickly. Drowning traps are very efficient against mobs, but need lots of space. –The preceding unsigned comment was added by PurpleKiwi (Talk|Contribs) . Please sign your posts with ~~~~!

This would be very nice, and would be very useful for the newer users. Pictures would also be very useful. Also, please write your signature by using 4 of these ~ Ok? 99seconds 06:39, 16 November 2010 (UTC)

Oops, I keep forgetting... --PurpleKiwi 08:06, 16 November 2010 (UTC)

The Landmine trap is totally inefficient but the same mechanism can be used in other places making it great. Combine the 4 Door trap and the Pitfall Landmine. Now the Problem is getting someone to step in it... --[RedstoneOperator]--

211.31.60.169 09:04, 25 June 2013 (UTC) I made a trap. There is a statue which you enter. Try to go through the a narrow doorway, entrance is shut. keep going, and pistons push blocks out of the way, so the lava I the walls kills the people. Also, if you want to make a camo red stone circuit, put it on top of nether rack.

Unescapable Door Trap

I tried to make this trap in SMP, but I didn't succeed. The best I could get is the trap, but it would be always closed and when you manage to get in, and step on the pressure plate, it opens... After that I got half the thing working, but not as described. A vid showing the door trap would be nice.

Driehoek 20:29, 29 Januari 2011

I made a cool door trap in SMP!

Basically, what I had was a long underground hallway that had a metal door on one end. Beside the door was a lever, supposedly to open it. However, the lever actually set off the 16 pieces of TNT under the floor. Nice trap or what?

Mob Tower Trap

The wording for this trap is hard to decipher and I can't watch the videos right now, but just the idea of an area of the map that spawns more mobs than any other area rings untrue to me. Should this trap design be allowed to stay? (the text would need cleaned up if it does stay) --DaMavster 20:40, 15 November 2010 (UTC)

It's true, there is a thread on the forum about it somewhere. –User:Ultradude25 (User:Ultradude25/t|User:Ultradude25/c) at 17:39, 15 November 2010 (CST)

I have noticed that the mob tower is similar to the lava-retrieval one. It uses the same principle, but the tower is built around a spawner. Redundancy? 99seconds 00:36, 16 November 2010 (CST)

New landmine

The new landmine is kind of useless to add. It's the same principle in the video i linked. Shall it get deleted or shall it stay? --Darkrille132 15:03, 23 November 2010 (UTC)

Trap Depictions

Would it be prudent to have all trap depictions have a set legend for less confusion? I see a lot of #'s and W's and L's, but many people use either O's or blank spaces for air.

Possibly:

Blank = Air

W = Water

+ = Stone

L = Lava

i = Torch

C = Cactus

Other more diverse block types could be explained within a post. Anything missing?

First person writing

Make sure you edit out anything first person. Like people saying "my trap" or "what I do is" or "the trap I made" and so on...not the correct way to write an article.

Major Rewrite and Merge

I just merged the two traps pages and did a major clean-up in formatting. I removed many designs that I felt were too poorly documented for me to expand/keep. Traps were merged and reworked where necessary (notable the arrow dispenser traps). I extracted the mob grinders and made a new page for them, which helped reduce the length of the page. I've tried my best to use simple English, consistent terminology and grammatically correct scentences, a practice that I would like to see maintained as new traps are added. I've also written up a quick guide for how we select videos for these tutorials:

  • Embed a video only if the trap is sufficiently complicated. If it can be clearly expressed in words and images/diagrams, it's not that complicated.
  • Link a video if the video directly relates to the building and demonstration of a trap.

Videos should ideally use the default texture pack, no mods, and have clear commentary and/or well written text boxes. The length should be as concise as is required to convey the trap. It should be recorded in daytime or with abundant lightinging and have balanced audio levels (and let's stay away from 200bpm music). If I removed a trap that you designed, please don't take offense.Qcdynamics 23:09, 14 August 2011 (UTC)

Floating Glass Canals

The other day I was here and there was something about a giant glass structure that used canals to bring enemies to the center and drop down, but it's missing now. Why?

I didn't personaly see what you are talking about but it sounds like that is some sort of mob grinder. so it might have been moved to a page about that Sickma 23:15, 11 December 2011 (UTC)Sickma

Fence Trap

I recently added a new type of trap that I call a fence trap. It works by making a fenced-off area and then adding dirt around the perimeter. It works because mobs cannot jump fences. I'm honestly suprised that it wasn't on the page. It's simple and works well. Thoughts? Sandosius 9:35, 23 October 2011

slpash potion traps

The setup is basically the same as an arrow dispenser trap, except the dispenser must be somewhat close and rapid firing isn't favorable. FatherToast 18:54, 11 December 2011 (UTC)

Dark room with Drowing room

I dont understand the tutorial for this trap, it has a large Dark room, drowning room and optional collection area. I dont understand the tutorial and the instructions on how to make this, It says the steps are from a side view but they are too confusing. Is there someone who does know how to build this structure edit the wiki to make it easier to follow.

Thanks

Idea

Okay. Heres my idea: Make a roller coaster. At the end, a iron door closes, and lots of falling gravel falls BEHIND you. Then there is a sign that says:

Chose your path wisely.

Okay, so they walk down a path for a bit. Then they drop down. At the end of the fall, there are 3 pathes. All have trapdoors, which lead to lava at the bottom. -unsigned

Break the door, or don't walk on the trapdoor. Trapdoors dont activate themselves, and a trap that gives the victim time to react is a trap that will never work. Most servers have /warp functions, so if you don't kill a victim before they can mine or tp out you lose.
Also, the gravel would break on the cart track.
Plus, "chose wisely?" really?
More effective would be a code oriented track - red stone can change the orientation of curves, so a pass code could determine whether you go to a base or get tossed straight into a pit of lava (in the cart, into a pit. No cliche business). -75.150.194.197 16:06, 18 January 2012 (UTC)

Not serious and engaging

The guides feels like they are not serious (even if the traps might work) and like a children have wrote them. The first thing I see is like "this is the best trap ever! just watch this video and see!". Further more is seem like the writers are trying to engage people to actually build the traps and even more trap other people. Trapping other people is like grieving in my option and it is not fun for the one being trapped. - CheatCat 08:24, 23 January 2012 (UTC)

Agreed, could use a rewrite. Trapping people is not grieving when used to defend yourself in a PvP server. Either way, some servers allow/encourage grieving, so player traps should be kept for completeness (similar to the avoiding traps tips). FatherToast 16:34, 23 January 2012 (UTC)

Traps are annoying, but they're great for home security and adventure maps. Also, on the topic of your comment on how it seems that children wrote them, I agree that it does seem so for some, and one of them (the one on Evil Clay) actually was written by a child. 66.57.19.80 20:06, 22 January 2013 (UTC) "Griefing," people. Fixing the page soon

Many traps here are redundant, combining similar lures / trigger methods / kill methods in different ways when breaking up the three parts of a trap into their own mini-section would be easier to read and vastly more compact. Traps are also used as often by map makers, to great effect, making the exclusion of things like proximity detectors and the main page description a bit off. If anyone thinks I am off, you fix the page before I get to it. I'm working for nothing here buddy, lol :) TheCakeisAlive 03:20, 4 March 2012 (UTC)

Noise Machine - arrows

Since recent updates, some redstone components cause arrows that were shot into them to shake and make noise when the component updates. Because of this, it is possible, to an extent, to use arrows shot into a repeater as a noise generator. 4.244.147.236 12:02, 16 March 2012 (UTC)

Video-only traps

Some of the traps listed are represented only with a video, where there is not enough text or other media to sufficiently explain the trap (eg: Proximity Detector).
Where possible, it would be nice if more information is given on these traps so that users who cannot watch videos for bandwidth or other reasons can benefit from them. 4.244.147.236 12:25, 16 March 2012 (UTC)

Mob traps

I think there should be a section for mob traps, since basically when going to the mob traps page you are re-directed to this page and what do you get? Player traps and there are only a few mob traps buried in here. NiceMark 10:56, 21 May 2012 (UTC)

Landmine

I think the people saying that 1 block of TNT under a block of grass with a pressure plate on top of the grass is efficient are a bit wrong. The trap can never kill anybody and just does half a heart of damage. Players will just run away from the pressure plate when stepped on, and also, why would anybody just randomly step on a pressure plate in the middle of nowhere? The only good thing about the trap is that if the victim is stupid enough to stay on the exact same spot, they will be trapped in a crater. J192 11:36, 9 July 2013 (UTC)

Most people (me, for example) put more than one block of TNT under the pressure plate, or put lines of TNT going out in every direction. User:Meeples10 User talk:Meeples10
Special:Contributions/Meeples10
13:12, 9 July 2013 (UTC)
Also if you put sand or gravel over it they fall when the tnt becomes non-solid and the player falls in. But yeah, more than 1 tnt is the standard. 1 tnt works when there's a good chance they'll find more than 1 trap in their journey. If you do that make sure they're spaced far enough apart so they don't just set each other off in a cascade. 24.68.154.229 18:46, 26 December 2013 (UTC)

Maximum number of loops performed?

Is it possible to fix this? I see many of these on this page and I don't know how to remove it. J192 06:38, 11 July 2013 (UTC)

Remove some block pictures. If you added any remove them ALL THE WAY to fix this.rcmaehl 06:41, 11 July 2013 (UTC)
What does that suppose to mean? J192 07:03, 11 July 2013 (UTC)
It's a limitation of the {{BlockGrid}} template, which can't be easily worked around. There is a newer {{Schematic}} template that avoids the issue, but it's more complicated to use. (We probably should convert everything to use it at some point; it displays better anyway.) The page had already exceeded the limit of BlockGrid cells before J192's edits, so undoing them wouldn't fix it entirely. -- Orthotope talk 07:45, 11 July 2013 (UTC)

Grammar and Spelling

I have read the article and found loads of spelling errors and incorrect grammar. I know that my English is not perfect, but this is a wiki where people will always expect that they can understand its contents. J192 15:34, 19 July 2013 (UTC)

Move some designs?

Some people that add their trap designs here are VERY lazy, they don't care about the grammar, they don't care about how the readers will understand it, they don't care if it actually makes sense, and worst of all, they don't care if they put the design in the correct section. I was reading the "Explosive Traps" section and I found traps that does not really use a single block of TNT, many are just weird traps that does not even turn a block into an exploding entity.

Shall they be moved? Or traps in the wrong section shall be immediately removed? J192 01:48, 20 July 2013 (UTC)

Just noticed "8.2.4 Dark Room and Drowning Room Trap" is a mob grinder not a player trap.

Just noticed "8.2.4 Dark Room and Drowning Room Trap" is a mob grinder not a player trap (it's my personal favorite type of drowning based mobgrinder). I'd erase it myself but it's missing from the mobgrider page (well there's a brief description of what a drowning trap is in general but this design of drowning trap isn't on it) so it should probably be moved rather than wiped and that's more work than I have time for right now.

Making sure about the target

Make sure your target is stupid enough to be trapped, doesn't work so much if he/she is very smart.

Well, one time I told my xbox buddy that I made a trap for him yet he still fell for it [LOL]. It ended killing our dogs & me going to the other end of the map but turned off the xbox w/o saving. [close call!]. MeowingInsanely 06:00, 7 June 2014 (UTC)

Widely used

Maybe only write about widely used and/or notable traps like CNB's "Long Drop"? It may be difficult, and the article is poorly written. A few are written by kids or people with poor grammar skills. Besides, not all of these fit in this page or even work in the first place. We can at least keep "Falling Sand". 108.216.30.138 23:17, 2 February 2015 (UTC)

I can't even load the whole TOC on my iPad. 108.216.30.138 23:21, 2 February 2015 (UTC)

This page is in need a rewrite, but rather than removing any traps that are not popular, it would make more sense to split the page into sub-pages based on trap type, such as "greed traps", "booby traps", "mob traps" and "traps requiring commands". While splitting, traps that do not work can be removed, and traps that use the same basic concept with variations can be merged. KnightMiner (t·c) 00:20, 3 February 2015 (UTC)

Why haven't you even..

Could anyone split the page into subpages? I can't read the page without my iPad reloading to webpage every few seconds because it's so large. 24.30.66.18 00:48, 13 March 2015 (UTC) Same for me.
