Blocks, markings, and determining north[]
Does this feature still work? I thought I saw a page on this wiki yesterday saying that this was an out of date feature not current.

With due respect to Mental Mouse for removing the cavern navigation and linking to the caverns article, per the Wiki instructions, tutorial information belongs in this section and articles such as the cavern article should be limited to factual descriptions and explanations. I agree that the navigation instructions under the cavern section are more clearly written which is likely why he made the change, but I think they should probably be transposed from there to here with the redundant paragraphs deleted if there is no disagreement. -- KADC - "Be unreasonable." 12:47, 21 August 2012 (UTC)

- I'm pretty certain the default setting is to follow and be notified automatically when any page you contribute to is updated. I receive five to thirty update notifications a day so if you aren't getting instant notifications you should check your settings. My user page is set up, and someone posted to my talk page once, but I find open discussions about edits yield more fruitful results. Alternately, unless the setting is turned off, you can message users directly if you want to have a private conversation. I reverted the entire edit because with the massive scope of the edit you made combined with a forthcoming merger of the two articles I thought it would be wiser to reinsert your contributions after the entire article was revised. As it stands now, the article clearly needs a lot of revision to meet the wiki style-guide standards as many of the paragraphs are redundant, conversational in tone, excessively wordy, and personally subjective.
- For example, making a pillar tall enough to be easily seen, note a direction, and lighting it is a general tip that can be clearly stated in a single sentence, whereas suggesting that pillars should be exactly 10 blocks high and that the variable damage taken depending on armour and difficulty setting from jumping from such a height is acceptable is someone's personal preference. If I added that I make my above-ground columns tall enough to be seen over any trees or hills but always below cloud level, make "arms" one block per every 100 blocks distance from what the arm is pointing to, use cobblestone arms to denote bases and dirt blocks to denote caves, villages, or other points of interest, and use gravel "elevators" to descend safely after construction, and then someone else adds what they do, and then someone else, and so on, what started out as a simple, easily expressed idea would soon become little different than an entire forum thread. This is why we should try to limit the points in each section to be as brief and general as possible and post personal details here with a link to/from the appropriate section. -- KADC - "Be unreasonable." 18:16, 29 August 2012 (UTC)
- Um, which page is merging with this one? I haven't seen any recent notice here, just that bit up top from 2010. The pillar example is certainly something that could be simplified (or moved to more specific page) -- I was scanning for dangerous advice (having noted there was a lot), and "just jump off the pillar" pinged on that, so I was just thinking "make that safer". In general, I think that making tutorials "efficient and terse" is misguided... for new users, a bit of extra discussion and even redundancy can be very helpful.
- Re: watching, as Orthotope noted most users don't automatically "watch" every page they edit. While it's nice to know that's an option, I don't know that I want to "adopt" every page I touch. I have been explicitly watching some of the pages where I do a lot of work or where I see "ongoing developments". --Mental Mouse 19:32, 29 August 2012 (UTC)
- Getting a bit off-topic, but the option to watch edited pages is off by default. While it can be turned on in the preferences, the vast majority of users will not receive notifications except for changes to their own user/talk pages. -- Orthotope 18:55, 29 August 2012 (UTC)
- by the way, I generally agree with your style assessment of the page, I just wasn't trying to fix all of that at once. I do think tutorials can reasonably be more conversational than "regular" topic pages, and as I noted some redundancy is good for the newbies. --Mental Mouse 20:07, 29 August 2012 (UTC)
