Type needed to be edited[]

"Stacked" Signs[]

That's already in the article. “Signs may be placed attached to any block, including ones such as fences, glass, other signs, and minecart tracks which torches cannot be attached to.” —KPReid 01:58, 27 January 2011 (UTC)

To be fair, the wording is not great, since you also cannot attach signs to water or lava - I think saying "any block" is definitely a confusing exaggeration. SartresWaiter 18:21, 23 August 2011 (UTC)

Character problems[]

I have never been able to type Asian characters onto signs in game, however I didn't put that directly in the article as I wanted to know if it was reproducible by others and whether there were other character sets affected (e.g. Greek, Cyrillic, Arabic, etc.). Thanks ... gacorley

I can't type Asian characters in either. I don't think it's a bug, it's just not a character set that Minecraft supports. --Bmambl 14:09, 31 May 2011 (UTC)

Ah, that's not it. Minecraft supports all characters supported by java, but the client places a ban on typing any unrecognized characters and the section sign. the reason for banning the use of the section sign was to prevent people from abusing colored chat messages and, later, the scrolling text that is seen in the end game cutscene after beating the ender dragon and returning. Signs don't show cracks[]

I figured out today signs do not show the breaking animation. Weird huh?

They do not, they are a entity. Using zombe's mod, and highlight mode which highlights all entities, it highlights signs, paintings, mobs, boats/minecarts. BUT it shows a bounding box when selected, unlike paintings. Calinou - talk × contribs » 14:09, 31 May 2011 (UTC)

Signs are blocks, not entities. And the are not highlighted. What you saw in zombe's modpack, was a Tile Entity in the same position as block. If you manage to place a sign without a tile entity, it will not be highlighted. DiEvAl 10:58, 13 June 2011 (UTC)

I forgot to say they were tile entities, but chests are not highlighted using the highlight mode. Maybe because the sign's display directly changes, unlike chests, which only have a texture, no font on it. Or Notch found that it was too hard to display cracks on the font. Tilde to color[]

[1] Cycloneblaze, you said you tried a tilde and it worked. However, I just tried it myself, and it didn't work. I even tried with other similar characters (the tilde's position in an US keyboard is the \ character's position in a Portuguese keyboard). Are you sure you didn't use a mod or something? I reverted the edit because, as of know, it's not proven to work, so I removed the assumed incorrect information... Please post a video or some more info so we can confirm this. Yes this is a client side mod. I'm not sure what mod is doing it. I think it is [Sign Tags] by Risugami. Others without this mod will see the tilde and number not the color as you see with the mod. -- Credomane 13:56 August 10, 2011 UTC

SMP Sign clear on block update[]

This is a bug I first discovered writing signs near a 5-clock. When placing and writing a new sign, the text will reset whenever redstone current is updated near it. I have also seen this happen when placing a sign near a set of pistons that were activated/deactivated. Untested in SSP. Test performed on a v1.7 vanilla server. BB 15:46, 8 August 2011 (UTC)

Colours[]

I think the colour section should be removed. I see no way to create coloured signs in vanilla Minecraft and it doesn't look like others have had any luck doing this (without mods or using NBTedit). Unless someone can reveal how to enter the section sign (§) into Minecraft - since § doesn't appear to work with ALT+0167 and you can't cut & paste it... Oilspill 15:50, 5 October 2011 (UTC)

Ahh I see the line that says "You can use a map editor" I'll change this to be more clear to indicate the section sign can only be entered via a map editor, not in Minecraft itself. Oilspill 16:03, 5 October 2011 (UTC)

Enchantments WTF?[]

That was created with an editor; it can't be made in game. You'll find that it does knock back mobs more (though still doing normal not-a-weapon damage) if you hit them with it — but if you place it down, the enchantment will be lost. —kpreid 01:03, 8 April 2012 (UTC)

Is this still valid? 'cause signs don't get damaged when used to hit mobs, and it could be quite useful for a mob farm - use pistons to suffocate mobs down to 1 heart then hit them with a Looting III sign... Sharfpang (talk) 00:16, 30 December 2018 (UTC)

Pocket Edition- Alternate to redstone[]

My friend recently discovered that signs can be used as an substitute to redstone in PE. If you place one sign along the side of a elevated brick so that it is anchored to the side of the brick but not the brick directly underneath it on a vertical column, and then repeatedly place signs horizontally along the front or sides of that sign, it will create a semblance of a simple wire. If you were to place, say, sand or gravel (blocks affected by gravity) along any one or all of the stacked signs, the signs will hold them up. However, when the first sign placed in that stack is destroyed, it will also destroy all of the stack that was placed AFTER it was, which will drop anything affected by gravity placed on top of the signs.. Water and lava can also be used but require the use of a inventory editor only found on the android app market ( PocketInv Editor ). This was written by Wyatt D. Original discoverer Brandon H.

Carpet[]

Yes, carpets can be placed on signs in 1.6, but the carpet is a solid block so you don't fall through, nice thinking though, would have been cool. 24.11.74.133 00:57, 5 July 2013 (UTC)

Old character limit[]

The current page doesn't say the old character limit - 15 characters per line according to an older version from before it was based on character width. I feel like that should be in the history section, but when attempting to edit it I noticed it was generated from somewhere. Could someone more experienced with the wiki edit it instead? About editing the table: When you say you noticed it was generated from somewhere, what exactly: did you click 'edit' or 'edit source'? I could probably help explain what you're seeing, if you want to know. (By the way I really recommend using 'edit source' especially with the history section. The history section works poorly in 'edit' mode, and it works very well in 'edit source' mode.)
About the sign: do you know the particular version where it changed from 15 characters to width-based? We would mention at the top how it used to be, and then, we'd put a row in saying when it changed. – Sealbudsman talk/contr 15:41, 23 September 2016 (UTC)
I tried both 'edit' and 'edit source', it was 'edit' mode that showed this:

I can see why 'edit source' would be more friendly for the history section, but if it's automatically generated from elsewhere (the snapshot and release pages, for instance), then there's not much point editing directly in the page.
The change was made in 14w25a, which was released June 18, 2014. To find the width of 15 characters, I looked at the Sign page's history for June 2014. The section of the version I checked can be found here: Sign page from 23 June 2014 NickNackGus (talk) 23:43, 24 September 2016 (UTC)

Maybe add better references to templates?[]

At the risk of overlooking something here...

Today I've experimented with signs and discovered that the information in the Data Values section was incorrect: just merely supplying String objects for Text1 to Text4 no longer works. I've made the necessary changes, but still had a little difficulty at first with finding the template or sub-page (not sure what to officially call it). Eventually I did find Sign/BE but it was a tricky find. So now I'm wondering if some kind of reference couldn't help to make this easier accessible? Of course now that I'm aware it's easy, and I did find {{/BE}} in the page section which also hints at this, but it's easy to overlook if you're somewhat new to this ;)

And I suppose that by writing this I created the reference, but still figured I'd mention it. ShelLuser (talk) 00:27, 2 January 2018 (UTC)

Problem with Minecraft China signs[]

Is it related to In Minecraft China, when a disallowed word or phrase is written on a sign, the sign will only display "xxx". or can you really not write anything on the sign at all?  Nixinova T  C  05:53, 5 May 2020 (UTC)
Formerly it was the xxx thing but in an recent version, you can still write on the sign but no text would display no matter what was written on it (for some reason, I cannot register so I do not have a signature) 114.250.162.32 13:31, 5 May 2020 (UTC)

Bedrock needs dyeable signs,too.[]

Why does JAVA get all the good stuff!!?? This triggered me once I found out about. In fact, Java and bedrock need to be equal. I want both versions to have every feature. I'll tell you why. I need bedrock edition to have colored text on signs. Without this feature, I can't make a horror map I'm building for my cousins. I want to impress them. but plain text is not going to do. Bedrock does have colored texted, see Formatting_codes#Color_codes. You just need to add the section code (§) and a letter or number in front of it. On iOS devices, you can do that by holding the & symbol on the keyboard and sliding up and right. Signs use raw json text in Java Edition, and can be edited via commands, plugins, and modifications. I haven't kept up with Bedrock Edition, but from previous discussion here you can use legacy section symbol based formatting (§). See Formatting codes NickNackGus (talk) 23:33, 14 May 2022 (UTC)

On the subject of Hanging Signs: Merge with Signs?[]

Well, we got access to the latest snapshot with the experimental features, one of which was the Hanging Sign. Now, we could just make another article to talk about them seperately, but since they're nearly identical in function, should we redirect those who want to learn about Hanging Signs to this article? The hanging sign page technically hasn’t been created yet. It already exists as a redirect to the sign page for now. I  Support merging hanging sign information on the sign page when applicable. BDJP (t|c) 00:32, 20 October 2022 (UTC)
Technically it HAS, but it's just a redirect to the Java/Bedrock Edition 1.20 pages. I thought about making the article myself, but stopped myself and decided to ask if we should put both regular Signs and Hanging Signs on the same page.
