Detailed walkthrough[]
To start the event, speak to the Master of Ceremonies in Helvetia at the top of the real-life hour (at XX:00 AM/PM), when the event will be announced to all players on the server, no matter their location in Appalachia, and the public event icon appears on the map. He'll be hanging around the bridge over the small creek that runs through town near the east side of it, near the Honey Haus and Freyja's Haus restaurant. There's about a 7-8 minute grace period to speak to him before the event is automatically failed if he is not spoken to beforehand and the event becomes inactive until the top of the next hour. Once started, the Vault Dwellers involved in the event must find five of the eight randomly-assigned Protectron marchers that can spawn in the town. Each Protectron will provide a task corresponding to their profession, and each task must be completed before the parade can begin. After a task is finished, the relevant marcher will walk to the center of town, between the post office and party hall, equip its Fasnacht mask, and wait for the others to arrive. The possible Protectrons and corresponding tasks are as follows:
- Cheerful Beekeeper: Exterminate the honey beasts which are attacking the Honey Haus. There are usually three basic honey beasts that need to be dealt with. They will be stronger, glowing versions if Helvetia had been in a blast zone recently.
- Happy Candlemaker: Donate beeswax from the Honey Haus hives to the Candlemaker (0/10)
- Gleeful Butcher: Donate intestines from small animals, mainly squirrels, chickens, opossums, and rabbits, at the Butcher's Cooler (0/12)
- Jolly Baker: Donate radtoad eggs from the stream to the Pantry (0/20)
- Convivial Historian: Bring old Fasnacht steins to the museum for analysis (0/10)
- Joyous Musician: Play one of the three instruments, found on the stage, in order to fill the meter.
- Jubilant Decorator: Decorate the barn (0/4)
- Merry Woodsman: Add wood to the bonfire (0/50). A bunch of wood scraps can be collected from the several wood piles behind Freyja's Haus at the corner of the T-intersection. Usage of the Luck perk card Woodchucker would be useful for this task.
Once all five tasks are completed and all five Protectrons assemble in the center of town, the Master of Ceremonies rushes over to join them and take point as parade leader, and the parade begins its route. First, the group walks east down Pickens Rd. to the front of Freyja's Haus, the yellow-painted restaurant, where it is attacked by swarms of basic radtoads, or glowing radtoads if Helvetia is or was recently in a blast zone from a nuke. The Protectrons can sometimes handle these on their own, depending on which ones spawned for the event. After the creatures are eliminated, the group moves north over the wooden bridge toward the Cheese Haus. The marchers stop in the middle of the field as super mutants, mutant hounds, and super mutant suiciders charge the group, with the suiciders being the biggest threat to the Protectrons if they get close enough to damage them when they detonate their mini nukes, or the mutant hounds if they are glowing variants from a recent nuke strike on Helvetia. Once the mutant assault has stopped, the marchers continue south. Finally, when the parade stops in front of the chapel, hordes of basic stingwings and wolves, or glowing versions if Helvetia is or was in a blast zone, attack. A legendary boss also spawns near the post office. The enemies spawn and attack when the music played by the Master of Ceremonies abruptly slows and stops before recovering, but playing a faster tempo during the attack, then repeats once the attack is over and the parade resumes, with the tempo returning to normal speed. If the Protectrons are damaged, Friendly Fire and a weapon that deals Fire damage can heal them to avoid losing one and getting fewer rewards at the end of the event.
After the enemies have been killed, a random boss is selected, either a Mega sloth, Super mutant behemoth, Sheepsquatch, Ogua, Grafton Monster, or a Blue Devil, and needs to be slain to complete the objectives to defend the Protectrons and make sure none were destroyed, the Fasnacht bonfire must be lit. At least one Protectron marcher needs to be kept alive in order to complete the event, with more survivors having no effect on the rewards upon the event being completed, otherwise, if all five are slain, the event fails. The participants may also be granted a random legendary weapon or armor piece after the event is completed. Completing the event also awards at least one random Fasnacht mask as a reward. If players get more than one of a certain mask, the duplicates can be sold for caps at a vendor, sold to other players via the vending machine at their CAMP, or placed into the mask donation bin outside the church.

Double dipping strategy[]
Fasnacht is an event that focuses entirely on the random number generator. Because of this, many people want to attempt to "double dip" - that is, to do the event really fast, switch server and get to a server that hasn't finished yet.
There are several ways to increase the odds that you start fast and therefore finish fast:
- The Best Public World Method: The absolute best on public worlds is, of course, to team up with other people, all of whom are prepared with intestines, beeswax, wood, steins and eggs, having everyone wait at a different marcher and then talk to the Master of Ceremonies as soon as possible, having everyone else turn in where they stand, and if no marcher spawns there, sprint to the next one. If you organize a sufficiently large group, you can even have someone at every single marcher. This, however, is a lot of organizing with other people, and as a result, this is not for everyone.
- The "I Don't Have a Group" Method: A method to prime a server for a fast Fasnacht that can be done alone is to simply gather up intestines, beeswax, steins and wood, then drop the sufficient amount at all of the turn-in points. This will allow someone going there who does not have the needed materials to pick up the materials you put down and instantly turn in the items. Make certain you use fresh Intestine as it has a spoil rate of 75 minutes. This means it can make it to the next event just fine no matter when you put it down, but if it isn't fresh it might not.
- The Minmax Group Method: It is possible to get 8 rewards per hour with this method. It does require 7 people, all of whom have Fallout 1st and a second account. The method, shortly explained, is to have all 7 people do their parades as fast as they can, at the same time. Once a person finishes their parade all the way to the end, it is important not to light the bonfire. This trick relies on the fact that you can have the "Light the bonfire" objective running for as long as you want, until the timer runs out. Once all 7 people are ready, they bring their mules into their private worlds to keep the world open, then they take turns traveling to each other's private worlds, lighting the bonfire and getting the rewards. This means everyone gets 7 rewards plus an additional one on their own world where their mule is stationed to keep the world alive, yielding a total of 8 rewards per hour. As of writing, it took about 25 minutes from start to finish, so this is a very time-consuming method, but it also allows you to do 8 hours of Fasnacht in 25 minutes, so even if you only do this a few times, it is more than worth it. A tip for clearing a Fasnacht parade alone is using Friendly Fire and weapons like the Cremator - this should make it a breeze as the Protectrons can more than handle the enemies as long as you keep them alive, but the Cremator should also help kill stuff fast.
- The "I Don't Have A Group But I Have 1st and a Mule" Method: This method is for all intents and purposes the same as the Minmax Method. You simply open a private world and finish your parade fast. Like with the group method, you do not light the bonfire. The difference with this method is that as you have no group to team up with, you keep your mule account on a public server to finish Fasnacht there first. Once your mule has gotten the public server rewards, you bring your mule to your private world and get two more rewards for a total of 3 rewards per hour.
Notes[]
- The Master of Ceremonies and the Protectron marchers are able to walk through obstacles, such as placed power armor chassis.
- Helvetia can be nuked during the event, leading to the event transpiring in a blast zone.
- 5 new bosses were added in Fallout 76 patch 1.7.12.10: a Super mutant behemoth, Sheepsquatch, Ogua, Grafton Monster, or a Blue Devil.
- The speed of the marchers was increased in Fallout 76 patch 1.7.12.10.
- Prior to Fallout 76 patch 1.7.12.10, the number of surviving marchers affected the rewards.

Delays[]
Fasnacht Day's return in 2020 was initially delayed due to a bug introduced with the release of Wastelanders. The event was originally slated to be active from May 25 - June 1, 2020, but a bug prevented small creatures from spawning at normal rates on public servers. Since intestines, dropped by small animals, could not be obtained but were needed for the Gleeful Butcher's parade task, the event could not be completed without prior preparation.
The event was disabled on the morning of May 25, having only briefly been active before being delayed. The issue was not present during the 2019 version of the event and the critters bug was confirmed to have been introduced with Wastelanders.[1] Fasnacht Day was eventually re-enabled without major issue on May 27, with an extension of the festivities until June 9.
Behind the scenes[]
- Fastnacht is an annual carnival celebrated by Swiss, German and Austrian people while traditionally wearing masks that represent demons, jesters, witches and animals. In Helvetia, West Virginia it is normally celebrated once per year on the first weekend after Fat Tuesday,[2] and concludes with the burning of an effigy in a bonfire, without any robots or megasloths.[3]
- The music played during the Fasnacht parade is the 2004 instrumental "One More Pils," an exercise composed by Andy Vale and licensed from APM Music. While the original piece is 1:10 minutes long, the version used in-game is comprised of two 15 second clips that endlessly repeat one after another.[4]
Bugs[]
- Defeat Honey Beasts at the Honey Haus: honey beasts may spawn behind the Cheese Haus, and will not move until they detect a player.[verified]
- Porcelain Stein: porcelain steins are missing their auto-scrap protection.[verified]
- explosive bait.[verified] Destroyed Marchers (#/5): Protectron marchers may be destroyed by
- The Protectrons or the Master of Ceremonies may not respond to the current objective of the event for several minutes, causing the event to fail via time running out because they lagged for too long. Same for enemies spawning during the parade route.[verified]
- [verification overdue] If a missile turret or ally hits a marcher they may start attacking the marchers, causing the event to fail.
