The Kurta Clan (クルタ()(ぞく)()()()()()()()(), Kuruta-zoku) was an endangered clan from the Lukso Province. At the time of its near destruction, five years prior to the 287th Hunter Exam,[1] it counted 128 members, only 37 of whom possessed Scarlet Eyes.[2]

Overview[]

Lukso Province

The Lukso Province

The clan's people are famous for their Scarlet Eyes. The well-known brilliance of their Scarlet Eyes caused them to be in high demand as a flesh collector's treasure. At the same time, people not from the clan would often become frightened and violent after witnessing the change. These two factors led the Kurta Clan to choose to live in obscurity in the forests of the Lukso Province.[1]

Phantom Troupe message

The message left behind by the Phantom Troupe, which reads, "We reject no one, so take nothing from us."

If a member of the clan ever wished to explore the world, they would have to go through a series of tests. One is a written exam, another is an oral questionnaire, and the third is the most difficult: a journey into town to buy groceries and not get upset or angry. This is done by using special eye drops which causes the Scarlet Eyes to last long after the person has calmed down. If the Scarlet Eyes appear, it means that the person is not ready for the outside world and will fail. This is because people from the outside world are afraid of the clan's Scarlet Eyes due to the fact that it causes them to lose rationale and gain tremendous strength, especially when angry, and the clan member could be a danger to oneself or someone else.[3] Kurapika was able to cheat when Pairo changed the special eye drops with regular water, allowing Kurapika to pass even after his eyes turned scarlet.[4]

Upon passing the exam, Kurapika, then aged 12, is granted permission to leave the clan for an indefinite amount of time. Kurapika desired to leave to find a doctor to heal his friend Pairo, who was suffering from injuries he accidentally caused. Before his departure, the Elder gave Kurapika information about Pairo's condition, though he cautions Kurapika, saying he'd rather Kurapika not leave in the first place.[4]

Six weeks after Kurapika left his clan, all of the other members were massacred by the Phantom Troupe, and their eyes were stolen and sold on the black market. A note was left by the perpetrators that read: "We'll accept anything you leave, but don't ever take anything away from us".[4][5] Kurapika, now the sole survivor of the Kurta Clan vows to capture the Troupe, and sets out on a quest to retrieve the eyes of his brethren.[6]
