Deus Ex Machina[]

Should there be a note on the article mentioning how Liberty Prime is a perfect example of deus ex machina? I've never seen a better example of this is a video game until now. Liberty Prime is never properly explained in the main plot, and then suddenly blasts into the plotline as the solution to everyone's problems. After The Waters of Life, the player can talk to Rothchild and Owyn Lyons about 'the robot' but it never bears significance. If you don't know what it is, here's the Wikipedia article. Any thoughts on this, guys? --Dthvirus 23:20, 10 March 2009 (UTC)

I'd have to say, no, this is not a Deus Ex Machina. It is a Chekhov's Gun.

Deus Ex Machina is when a plot element is suddenly introduced in order to resolve any conflict within a storyline, without any explanation at all for its existence. An example of Deus Ex Machina would be say, "The heroes were trapped in the burning building, until suddenly, a cloud appeared in their midst and carried them to safety".

On the other hand, Liberty Prime is a perfect example of Chekhov's Gun. Prior to Take it Back!, Liberty Prime is a background object whose purpose at first is unexplained, however it is there. When the time comes, its true purpose is revealed to the audience, and its existence is completely explained.

So to re-iterate, Liberty Prime is not a deus ex machina, where it suddenly and unexplicably appears when needed, but a Chekhov's gun, where it remains in the background until it is needed, which is where everything is explained.

Unless you have better arguments to the contrary, I will reformat the entry to refer to Chekhov's gun. 99.238.107.110 20:24, 26 March 2009 (UTC)

I see what you mean. I was going for Cut-And-Paste deus ex machina, which is an illogical placement of Chekhov's gun. Pretty much what it means is that the writers wrote themselves into a unsolveable situation, then went back and tossed in Liberty Prime to make their ending make sense. Since Cut-And-Paste deus ex machina is not as well-known as Chekhov's Gun, I'll leave the entry as it is. Also, thanks for the edit. Nice to see someone who has a solid grasp of English, especially on a wiki. You should make an account. One more thing. I'm going to list the ending at the purifier as Diabolus Ex Machina. Any thoughts? Dthvirus 02:03, 27 March 2009 (UTC)

Actually early on in the game, you get the opportunity to learn about Liberty Prime, who made it, why it exists, and the problems with building it, etc... There is a computer in the citadel that contains several files. If you read all of them then you get to learn the entire history of Liberty Prime and you get to see the technical difficulties of both the original builders and the brother hood. Its neither Deus ex Machina nor Chekhov's gun. The brotherhood hunts for of relics of old knowledge and old technology. The enclave does the same, but just happened to get lucky and find better stuff. Everything is made clear if you do a lot of talking and a lot of reading when introduced to the citadel and the library next door.

Yes, we do get a lot of background information about it. But that information is irrelevant. As the protagonist you gain no prior knowledge that it will be used to resolve the situation at the end of the game until just before it happens. It still remains a Chekhov's gun in that it is present before the event in which it is required, i.e., clearing the way to the memorial. Also incidentally, you're wrong about the Enclave for most part. Instead of salvaging technology and information, they actively research and manufacture new pieces of technology. 99.238.41.80 05:29, 13 April 2009 (UTC)

What some people don't understand is that neither a Checkov's Gun nor a Deus Ex Machina are, strictly speaking, "bad." Deus Ex Machina often _is_ bad but that's because it is difficult to do well even for good writers and bad writers use it when they definitely shouldn't. If done well it is no more poor writing than any other literary device (foreshadowing for example).

Checkov's Gun, on the other hand, is less a literary device and more of a literary principle for writers to follow. The purpose of Checkov's Gun is to remind authors not to bore or distract their readers with unnecessary information. From a reader's perspective the consequence is that any object in a story more interesting than, for example, a door knob but which has not been given a specific purpose for being in the story will likely be involved in solving a problem later on. Liberty Prime is certainly more interesting than a door knob but seemingly serves no purpose at all until this mission. Ergo, a savy reader can predict that it will become important later.

Of course, there is also such a thing as a red herring. The purpose of red herrings is specifically to prevent the reader from being able to accurately guess what comes next by placing interesting but otherwise meaningless events and objects in the story. Often this is necessary for horror and suspense novels to work well (Unless they rely on Deus Ex Machina instead). Thus there are exceptions to Checkov's Gun. 68.63.0.36 23:01, June 7, 2015 (UTC)

Extra dialogue when asking followers to activate Project Purity[]

Last play-through Charon said something about the contract only entitling me to his services in combat, the article only has something about him flat-out refusing. Maybe other characters have alternate dialogue too?

YES. I just got through beating this quest and FAWKES agreed to enter the chamber and activate the purifier. The ending showed him as the true hero instead of Lyons. This MIGHT occur only if the player has broken steel already downloaded before this quest.

This was my very first time playing through this main quest in full, downloaded broken steel before finishing the game. Also just wanted to mention that if you beat the main quest, the game will NOT end but instead transition into broken steel almost seemlessly.

I updated the wiki quest with the new info, but someone could re-write it that would look better.

Supermutants[]

FAWKES WILL ENTER THE CHAMBER. I just played this quest and HE DID enter for me and entered the code It must be because I have Broken Steel downloaded before I started the quest. Also my level cap was raised to 30 even though I didnt finish the main quest yet. This ending makes so much more sence, especially when Broken Steel starts. xbox tag: DCmantommy72

The article about Supermutants state that they are IMMUNE not resistant to radiation. So Fawkes is just a really bad design decision.

I disagree. Fawkes' fingers are too fat to sucessfuly imput the code. Charon is viable however, considering that his is both brainwashed and immune to radiation, although it MAY overload even a ghoul as it does reduce you to plasma dust/goo.Rogue scholar 02:13, 6 January 2009 (UTC)
That justification falls flat on its face as having Broken Steel whose Fawkes could sucessfuly imput the code despite the size of his fingers. In fact, Broken Steel just goes to show way so many players were ticked off with the ending - you have a more logical method available and the original game would not let you take it. It was effectively a Cold Equations set up - the moment you annualized it it is filled with so much special pleading that it makes no blasted sense. Never mind "The Cold Equations" showed even that contrived BS no-win situation actually had a way both people could have lived. --BruceGrubb (talk) 01:52, August 16, 2020 (UTC)

Fawkes does hold true to the ideals of his namesake though. In a way, Purity is the characters own 'parliament' and that you have to be willing to do anything for your cause, even die for it. Wouldn't really be the same if at the end of his quest he asked someone else to step up and do his job for him...

Choosing an unnecessary death is simply stupid, nothing more. To die for your cause is good, if it makes sense. But in this case, someone else could do the job and survive, so this would be the best option. I really hate railroading like this. Imho it would be the best idea to simply add the possibility, that the player survives (either by sending Fawkes or using an advanced radiation suite, etc.).
Yes, Bethesda really needed to think of a better excuse for the companions immune to radiation not to help. It's an irritating turn of events to be told its your characters' "destiny" is to die. How about these simple solutions to make it less of a slap in the face (all conceived of within a few minutes):
-The companions are killed off entering the Purifier with the rest of Lyon's Pride. Still epic, but more believable than Fawkes' defection or inability to reprogram or coerce Sergeant RL-3.
-A security door (say, the one that magically locks upon entering) locks them out at the last minute.
-The security system at the Purifier is only coded to permit the player or a BOS member inside.
-They are tasked with assisting the robot in defending the Memorial, outside.
-The threat inside the Purifier is not radiation, but extreme heat or cold, or perhaps another strain of FEV.
-In a cutscene, a piece of battle-related debris isolates your player and Sentinel Lyons from the companions. <<< That would be the most rational explanation in my opinion. They could be working to clear it aside but not have time.
-In a cutscene, Colonel Autumn surprises your player and kills or incapacitates your companion before you can attack.
-If she is present, Fawkes is needed for something requiring her immense strength or stature (preventing something from falling, clearing debris).
It doesn't seem too difficult to me to make a more reasonable ending. I for one am incredibly disappointed with my 60+ hours of game time. The game was so diverse, adaptable, and intriguing up until last fifteen minutes. I for one let the irritating blonde woman die instead! I'm all for drama, but they effectively killed the opportunity for future exploration, expansions, and downloadable content. They've announced new updates, but there is no word on whether they will involve another player character entirely. If it is your character, there will have to be a 'lame-duck' excuse for your survival - perhaps a magic radiation cure, or that the 'coward' ending is canon. For a game that went so astoundingly far as to rationalize fire-breathing ants to the cynical player, I really wish I could express to Bethesda how sorely disappointed I am. I would like to see a coherent response from their design team as to why this decision was made. As another poster lists below -there is no excuse-. (Anonymous, 26 November 2008)
So all the talk about there being hundreds of endings are lies? A single path (well, I guess you could be generous and give them two for being able to introduce the virus) and then several different videos does not make for lots of endings!
Well if you count all possible combinations of the pictures, including the eight race/sex choices (and some sense of PR) there may be. :P However it really comes down to good or bad karma, pure or impure water and self or Sarah sacrifice (which makes 8). 88.65.124.184 16:43, 13 February 2009 (UTC)
I'm pretty sure even Fawkes would killed by the ending ordeal. If you look at the final cut scene, you're aren't just irradiated, you are turned into plasma goo by the ordeal. We're in agreement that being forced to die or sacrifice someone was a stupid decision, but Fawkes is just a Red Herring. (Geldonyetich 19:01, 24 November 2008 (UTC))

As I stated below, I have tested and found out that the radiation is much stronger in the G.E.C.K. area than in Project Purity. If Fawkes can walk through the G.E.C.K. area with no problem, it should be a walk in the park for her to enter the code for you. Saikotik 11:34, 31 December 2008 (UTC)

The catch is that the radiation in the purifier is delivered in a single great blast upon activation. What you feel before is just the aftermath of the last one. 88.65.124.184 16:43, 13 February 2009 (UTC)
If you're immune to radiation, one would assume that you could absorb any amount of it - so Fawkes really should have been a viable option. And apart from that, what about Charon? Any character can potentially recruit him, and as a ghoul he's actually healed by radiation - but he also declines to turn on the purifier. Surely there's no excuse for that!
I'll bet money that sacrificing one of your partners, or convincing one of them to do it for you that could survive instead of you or sarah lyons is the bases for broken steel.

I must agree. I don't understand how Fawkes could refuse to do it for you like that. Even after you free Fawkes and he goes through huge amounts of radiation to get the G.E.C.K., he refuses. (If you enter the area where the G.E.C.K. is without any radiation protection, you can get up to around 50 rads per second. Walking straight up to the Project Purity console input thing radiates you at about 20 rads per second or so).

If I can retrieve the G.E.C.K. by myself with an Advanced Radiation Suit and some Rad-X, even though the radiation is much more powerful in that area, then I should be able to do the same in the Project Purity scenario.

Also, what if Col. Autumn had some of the anti-radiation liquid with him on his corpse? The stuff that he injected into himself to survive the radiation the first time you see him. Could you inject yourself with that to put in the code without dying?

At least adding the (really difficult or hidden) "bonus" option to obtain that medicine would have been a nice easter egg. Maybe combined with some extensive economical task, like The Nuka-Cola Challenge. 88.65.124.184 16:43, 13 February 2009 (UTC)

Maybe perhaps you could use a really long object (such as a Chinese Officer's Sword) to input the command without having to put yourself at too much risk?

Also, why didn't the Lone Wanderer get the hell out of the control room when he activated Project Purity? I would have gotten the fuck out of there if I were about to die, haha. Saikotik 11:21, 31 December 2008 (UTC)

Screw that, it's good to see a "non-sissy" ending. The self-sacrifice method is ultimately the best choice for the ending they made. Project Purity was supposedly stopped mainly because of your birth (though there were other factors). Sacrificing your life to finish the project makes sense. --Clean Up 02:07, 2 January 2009 (UTC)

The Sacrifice ending became a Sarcred cow, and couldn't be sacrificed. And apparently the companions were put in after the main quest was done, so they had to close it off stupidly. I used to love Bethesda...24.1.34.230 22:27, 4 January 2009 (UTC)

Well I guess a logical reason would be because none of the companions knew the input code, but then again a) how would Miss Lyon know and b) couldn't you simply tell them? 99.238.107.110 20:10, 30 March 2009 (UTC)

Sarah Lyons is told the code by you, the Lone Wanderer.

Stimpaks[]

Would still be useful due to their negligible weight, ability to restore limbs and the sheer healing power of a stimpak over a purified water

The main point of purifying the water is to eliminate radiation from the wasteland. Water recycles itself, as well; there are limited supplies in the wasteland, so stimpacks would eventually be non-existent. Saikotik 11:03, 31 December 2008 (UTC)

Variations[]

Can one introduce the FEV and still have Sarah Lyons start the purifier? I had given it to Elder Lyons and could not check. --Tisi 23:05, 28 November 2008 (UTC)

Yes you can insert the FEV before cycling the airlock

Colonel Autumn's Death[]

So, I got to the end, finally wanting to see what kinda loot Colonel Autmn has, but when I shoot him, his body falls, and somehow magically gets into the water in the Rotunda. Now, I thought 'okay, that's just bad luck', so I reloaded a save (before the battle even started) and tried it again, and his body still magically slithered into the water, making me unable to access his remains! So, is this a scripted event, or is it just 'really bad luck'?

In my game Colonel Autumn's body was reachable and lootable. He has unique clothing and a unique laser pistol. This, however is useless as there are no more enemies to kill.

Well, it's not like you're gonna have much time to enjoy his loot anyway... --Clean Up 01:47, 2 January 2009 (UTC)

Bugs[]

I put the modified FEV in the filter before sending Lyons in to activate the purifier, resulting in the good ending (saying that the Lone Wanderer had not poisoned everyone). Next I put the modified FEV in the filter and waited for the explosion, which resulted in the bad ending.

Wouldn't waiting for the explosion, regardless of whether you placed the FEV in the filter, cause the bad ending anyway? The FEV is there, but you never activated it. But yes, the first one sounds like a glitch to me. Saikotik 11:26, 31 December 2008 (UTC)

-I added a tested fix for the Liberty Prime wont move bug for the Xbox, but it was removed/undone, any ideas as to why?

-I have encountered a bug in the Rotunda control room, Sentinel Lyons just keep saying: "let's make sure this area is locked down before we do anything else."

I cannot get any further in the game, and im just waiting for the whole thing to explode.

I didn't take the FEV virus.

Purifier activation code[]

"It is not specifically given as the activation code at any point in the game."

...Yes and no...

When you get kidnapped and interrogated by Autumn, if you choose the yielding dialogue option (something like "don't hurt me", he will be pleased by your cooperation, if you keep yielding you will get to three final choices: tell him you really don't know the activation code or pick a choice of two, the first false and the second correct. You do get killed for it but the game does make it clear that 2-1-6 is the correct one if you go down the path of cooperation.

They also tell you code as one the speech option when you send in Lynos to actave the pureifer,

This is true, but it is not specifically told to the Lone Wanderer what the activation code is. You sort of have to gather it from what little clues you are given. Saikotik 11:08, 31 December 2008 (UTC)

Revelation 21:6 BrenMan 94 21:20, 22 May 2009 (UTC)

Although the code makes sense it's something I wouldn't of thought of sense they never realy saidthe code was the revelation

So the Enclave apparently didn't have enough eggheads laying around to figure out a three digit code just by trial and error? All you need is to program a protectron to run through every three digit combination and you'd get the code. --Anonymous

End of Fallout? - Viable alternatives[]

SO will this be the end of the Fallout series? It seems that way judging by the ends. HuangLee 18:56, 7 February 2009 (UTC)

Not necessarily. They're coming out with more DLC, including Broken Steel, which will raise the level cap and extend the game. --Turbine2k5 18:58, 7 February 2009 (UTC)

Speaking of Broken Steel, it was said that this ending will not remain canon. This brings up the question: What COULD be the new canon? - Ideally preserving the climatic decision as it is, since that was the main concern of Bethesda (even if it meant a flaw in logic considering certain followers, which were implemented fairly late - too late to come up with a better solution).

As for the problem why certain followers can't help, several more convincing solutions were mentioned above. If they are to stay alive, the simplest method (which would also explain why one can't go back outside) would really be to have them become separated from the player and Sarah during a cutscene upon entering the purifier. Standard "falling ceiling" stuff.

The greater problem is how to make the "good" player survive. I can think of three ways:

  • Simply say an immune follower helped after all. Pretty lame though.
  • Save the player with Colonel Autumn's medicine. After the first incident in the purifier, and other failed attempts at entering the code, he should have brought some! Sarah could either take it from his corpse, or get it from him after he was spared/captured.
  • The player survives, but becomes a ghoul!

Bottlecap for your thoughts.

They said theyd modify the ending,so what if either

A:autumn gives lyons radawy (if he was spared) and she saves you with it

B:Lyons finds the radaway on autumns corpse and saves you

C:you are given the choice between saving lyons or letting her die (if you were a coward)

D:you inject yourself with radawy when the memorial goes pop (if you let it,ya cheap cowardly bastard)Werewolfhell 18:08, 2 March 2009 (UTC)

Its actualy quite possible that Colonel Autumn would just give you the special rad-away, considering he actualy objects to the whole idea of using the FEV vial.--Greig91 22:01, 20 March 2009 (UTC)

Charon[]

Why does everyone keep saying that Charon won't activate the Purifier for you? He did it for me. Could it be because I just downloaded Broken Steel and that changed what can happen? --Alexim Mose 12:24, 7 May 2009 (UTC)

I just got the PC version of Broken Steel (AFTER THE "FIX") and I'm getting stuck here. Lyons insists we "clear the area" although I've killed both the Col and his bodyguards! Major bug here, never encountered it before, loading a save did NOT fix it, but I haven't tried restarting the entire quest yet...

When I did this mission Charon disappeared, but not forever as stated in the article. He reappered in the Citadel after completing Who Dares Wins. Has it worked out that way for anyone else or did he disappear for everyone? If it makes a difference I destroyed the Mobile Base and I play on 360.--JiNX Bloodfang 11:26, 8 June 2009 (UTC)

what will happen if......[]

what will happen if you have the broken steel dlc and choose to put the viurs in? will u be able to play afterwards and if so, how will DC be differnt?--That70sdude 22:31, 15 May 2009 (UTC)

Does someone know, where I can find charon after I completed the main quest line? He won't be at underworld or my home...

the only difference's are three dog's commentary (possible) and the aqua pura will not only be contaminated, but you will recieve negative karma for giving this version of the aqua pura to water beggers.

paradox[]

as i have readed, the ending guy will recall fawkes or charon being a "true hero", what also implies the pc beign not, if you let any of them enter in the chamber, but actually, none is true hero in that situation; it would be stupid, not heroic, to enter by yourself having a companion which is not harmed by radiation, and will also be stupidly cruel for a person/mutant/ghoul to let somebody die inside being actually inmune to radiation. theyre not true heros. doing that they sacrificed nothing, not even got tired. also ghouls are HEALED by radiation. i readed it at the loading screen.

And other thing: in bugs section, one text recalls the pc beign part of the lyon´s pride at the time, but you can actually refuse, right? i did at least.

Best choice?[]

What is the best choise? I have Broken Steel bought, so letting the purifier explode; doesn't look a good option for me... So what exactly happens when I put in the Modified FEV? The whole Wasteland dies or something? Thanks in advance --I3art 21:25, 30 May 2009 (UTC)

QuestID stages[]

What are they? Cause I had to use noclip to activate the purifier, since Lyons never showed up inside. So now I'm stuck on the 'Secure the Project Purity control room' part of the mission, and scribe Rothchild won't talk to me for Broken Steel missions. So if I could get the IDs without having to dumbfire my way through the combinations it would be appreciated, though I'm going to do process of elimination right now seeing as it'll probably be days til I get a response here.

no. he'll turn it on no matter what as long as you have broken steel. you can also get Fawkes and Charon to turn it on, but no one else will.Wrpen-99 18:06, March 2, 2010 (UTC)

Start and complete in Jefferson Memorial[]

Should it be mentioned that useing cliping mode on the pc the player can entre the Memorial and encounter Colonel Autumn like normal(except ther are no bodyguards) and enter the code to start the purifier. Without having to go to the Citadel.

Activation Glitch[]

Using the PC port, a while back I had glitches on this quest (one save had Liberty Prime get hit by a mortar and stand there in front of the bridge. I had to reload two saves before that). Anyway though, under the save that worked, I decided to sacrifice myself. Yet despite how many times I typed in the code and hit "Enter," the Purifier only ended up exploding. I tried reloading a couple saves within the Memorial numerous times but no matter what I did the Purifier didn't activate. (I hit the buttons very slowly and carefully yet still no result). Point is it won't activate, period.

Anyone else got this problem?

Warning for players[]

If you don't have Broken Steel and you wish to complete the other quests in the game, make sure you save before returning to the Citadel. The latest you can save is after you speak with Elder Lyons. Talk to Sarah Lyons and tell her you need a minute or two to prepare. Then you can feel free to keep playing the game as if you never started the main quest. once Liberty prime is activated, it doesn't really make sense if you just leave while all the fighting is going on.

I'm stuck, i can't go further[]

When i kill colonel autumn, Sentinel keeps saying, Make sure this area is locked down, before we can do anything else, i play on xbox 360, someone can help?

Me too, i have all DLC downloaded(but have removed B.S. and had the same results), and Lyons says the same thing every time no matter what variants of conversation i use with Col. Autumn or her. Any help other than restarting the game...? (im on 360 as well)

Me three on this problem. I'm on an Xbox as well, I completed the game on this character before and returned to the old saves, then when I got Broken Steel and other DLC I went to redo the quest and it has these errors coming up.

-Fixed!

you need to update the game via Xbox Live, at least worked for me (Xbox 360)

Lyons' Pride Armor[]

Isn't Lyons supposed to give me the Pride armor ? She just gives me a regular set of Power Armor at max health. --Penumbra 01:54, September 10, 2009 (UTC)

Sadly, no. She just gives you normal Power Armour. You'll have to reverse-pickpocket or kill one of the pride to get it. Or use console commands if ya have it on the PC. :p

(well its easy enough to get the lyons pride power armor, during take it back i find that nearly every single lyons pride member except for sarah dies, and therefore drops there special armor for all to take.Toolazytomakeaaccount 18:49, October 15, 2009 (UTC)

A Large Detour[]

After taking to Owyn Lyons and watching Prime being hoisted up and over the wall, I exited the Citadel into The Capital Wasteland but instead of leaving through the front gate, I fast-travelled home to Megaton to pick up some stuff, and then again to Rivet City. From there I walked to the Memorial and took out as many Enclave soldiers I could around the building (finally getting a good use for one of my Fat Men!). I rounded the memorial and followed the bridge into the city, walking roughly along Prime's path in reverse and taking out as many soldiers and Vertibirds as possible along the way, until I came pretty close to the Citadel and started to see Brotherhood soldiers and could see Prime waiting near the Citadel. Soon afterwards, as I came a bit closer, Liberty Prime started moving and the quest continued, but the resistance was significantly smaller than normal. Besides, this way I could safely use plenty of Mini Nukes on the way to the Citadel, without risking a friendly hit. Interestingly, Liberty Prime insisted on firing where the Vertibirds I had blown up had been standing. This on XBox 360 with no expansions installed. Khim 13:53, October 23, 2009 (UTC)

Saving Lyons Pride[]

I found that the npcs will use stimpacks if you reverse-pickpocket a few, which really helps keep Vargas from getting killed, since he seems to want to collect every falling mortar with his face.

mega glitch[]

when i leave the citadel prime misses the ships and stays still while this sniper shoots at thin air what is wrong i cant get prime to move his robotic ass

a solution[]

if prime gets stuck attack a brotherhood then run and hide prime will start to move repeat this until he gets to a blockade and he will work normaly (comfirmed ps3)

Naked Soldiers[]

(PS3)So, I ran ahead of Prime, and discovered you can sneak past the barrier on the left side of the bridge, Charon, Dogmeat, Paladin Cross , and Lyons will follow you, Fawkes will go around it seems, and you can progress up to the next scripted *invisible* barricade (I imagine it would be just like swimming across the river), Prime stops coming, and I had a chance to gain some XP/weapons, Filled up my/companions weight, and swam back to Citadel, to drop off the items (well over 1200 pounds, took a lot of distributing/repairing, to make it feasible in one trip), Anyways, when I came out again and went back to the bridge, to allow Prime to continue, a)Most of the Pride was dead, b) the soldiers on either side of the bridge were naked, I went to pickpocket them, and saw, they had the Armor, it just wasn't equipped.... Thought that was kinda neat Picture - Please Forgive Quality --198.53.213.34 07:39, November 14, 2009 (UTC)r3in

Lyons Pride Defectors[]

For some reason, only Sentinel Lyons participates in the battle against the Enclave. Everyone else just takes R&R at the A-Ring. Any suggestions how to to fix it?

I had the about the same happening, just Lyons and 1 other member of the pride joined the fight, and I kept getting crashes before the second force field. Fortunately I had a save from before I entered the citadel, so I went in, saw the chat, and made sure all of the Lyon's Pride left the building before I did. This made them all present, and kept the crash at bay. Joewsackett (talk) 06:54, March 11, 2017 (UTC)

Follower disappearance[]

I had Charon as a follower, and I activated the purifier without telling him to wait anywhere. Now I am playing Broken Steel but I can't find him anywhere. He's not in the Ninth Circle or at the purifier? Can anyone help here? -92.12.125.218 15:48, December 30, 2009 (UTC)

Stupid Liberty Prime[]

After the fight at the Jefferson Memorial, Crazy Wolfgang came along. That stupid piece auf scrapmetal Tincan Prime called him a communist and killed him, his protector and the brahmin. Not long ago, I invested in Crazy Wolfgang.

Finding Fawkes[]

When I went into the Purifier, I told Fawkes to wait. When I went back (I have Broken Steel), she wasn't there, she also wasn't at the Museum of History. Any ideas where she is?

Firstly, Fawkes is a "he". Bethesda confirmed it, and you will be banned if you continue to say it.
Secondly, followers disappearing is a common bug. Going through Bailey's Crossroads Metro will reunite them with you. Nitty Tok. 23:43, April 20, 2010 (UTC)

What do you mean by through, because I just went from Red Racer Factory to where the Outcasts are, and Fawkes isn't here.

Major problem[]

I have Broken Steel installed. After activating the purifier and listening to Ron Perlman tell me how bad of a dude I was, do not get teleported to the Citadel. Instead, I wake up with my controls locked in the same place I collapsed, and Take It Back does not end and Death From Above does not begin. If I end Take It Back and start Death From Above using console commands, I sit up as I assume you would in the Citadel (I have not played broken steel yet), but I do not get teleported and my controls remain locked.

I'm not sure what caused this, but right now I'm more concerned with how to fix it. Is there a way I can coc to the exact spot I need to be in for Death From Above to work correctly?

Also, I tried sending Fawkes in instead, but he just stands in the airlock after I activate it.

Edit: The commands "coc citadelbring", "setstage 14e91 200", and "setstage [broken steel identifier]000802 0" appear to work so far. However it may be very possible that Lyons and Fawkes are still in the Rotunda, as they were there when I teleported out; I have not yet checked to see where they are as I don't know where they should be at this point. For Fawkes, this should be easily solvable with the placeatme command, but it is my understanding that Lyons is supposed to be comatose or something. I'll see how this sollution turns out. At this point this is pretty much just here in case someone else encounters the same problem I guess.

Doubledit: Fawkes appeared behind me as soon as I moved to another cell (Citadel A Ring). I'm still not sure where Lyons is, but having never played Broken Steel before I'm not sure if I'm supposed to know.

Your Impurity In Broken Steel[]

People in the archive page expressed surprise that you turn out to not be a pure-strain human as Eden thought you were. I have two comments here:

1, do you really believe Eden would tell you "oh, btw, you're not pure-strain so it'll kill you eventually too! But please still do this for me, kthx".

2, The MASSIVE radiation surge that you miraculously survived if you've installed Broken Steel and activated PP yourself would probably make you somewhat impure now, even if you were pure beforehand...

Uh Eden didn't know you weren't born in a Vault and being flooded with radiation has nothing to do with it since the impurity is caused by the FEV viral mutations and not radiation. Sov68n 23:31, May 7, 2010 (UTC)
you're half right, Sov; he didn't know you weren't born in the vault, but even regular humans unaffected by FEV are still mutated enough to be killed by the FEV-laced water. Kris (talk) 22:25, July 14, 2010 (UTC)

Companion voices sound different?[]

Is it just me, or are your companions' responses voiced differently (when you ask them to go into the radiation chamber)? I asked Fawkes to go in, and his voice sounded WAY more mumbly and slurred than anything he says normally, almost as if the dialogue was a last-minute addition. How do the other companions sound? 99.226.122.17 00:25, May 8, 2010 (UTC)

That's because hes near tears, and it sounds weird for a Super Mutant. --Revolverman 07:42, October 14, 2010 (UTC)

Abandonment issues[]

I'm having chronic issues with this quest. As soon as any member of the Pride is killed & the remaining members have taken out any Enclave in the area, they'll act as if the job is done & wander off back to the Citadel (with the exception of Lyons, who seems to follow the player as a companion would). It's making the quest unbearable as keeping everyone alive is almost impossible & Vargas seems particularly fond of getting killed. Any tips? Would reloading to before i started the quest help? 92.22.79.14 14:38, May 10, 2010 (UTC)

It's an AI bug : Dusk,Kodiak,Gallows and Glade are intended to follow Vargas, not liberty prime, Lyons or you. If Vargas is killed (very likely as he is the first in line) the others return to their normal schedule. Yes, it is very annoying. Why is Gallows essential and not Vargas is beyond my understanding.Croquignol 06:04, October 14, 2010 (UTC)

I found the best way to keep the members of the Pride alive is to fast travel to Irradiated Metro as soon as you pass thru the last door of the Citadel (Liberty Prime will wait indefinitely) and clear the route of Enclave forces. This includes detonating any cars/motorcycles/vertibirds along the route (explosions/artillery do more damage to Pride members than Enclave plasma rifles), and lobbing a few mini nukes over the "photonic shields" as well. Travel the complete route several times as Enclave forces are scripted to appear at various trigger points. Drop a few well-placed bottlecap mines at the locations where Enclave forces are triggered by Liberty Prime. Then fast travel back to the Citadel to "start" Take it Back. Once you've breached the last barrier quickly target the vertibird that will try to land forces behind you, being careful not to detonate it while it's directly overhead. Upgrading the Pride's armor and weaponry (Tesla armor/Gatling Lasers/Stimpacks) wouldn't hurt. 68.108.122.70 19:19, December 9, 2010 (UTC)

Under notes:

"Killing a member of the Lyons Pride will cause Liberty Prime to become hostile. This will probably result in the players death."

"probably"

Is there a way to fix the problem where Sarah will keep telling me to lock dow the room without the patch since I can't get on Live right now. ~~Riond55~~

Something weird happened when I was doing this quest. as i was crossing the bridge, i kept getting a notice saying "shrapnel is unconsious". after i got across the bridge i was surprised to see shrapnel fighting the enclave! was he meant to be there or was it a glitch? its probably a glicth but im curious as to why it happened.

Dead Enclave Scientist[]

Just a little note here, I got to the Rotunda and inside of it was an Enclave Scientist with 10 units of both Rad-Way and Rad-X. While this could be random, when I was captured by Autumn, I told him that the code was 7-0-1 or something, and the radio replied saying they lost a man. I suspect this is why this scientist was here. Can anyone else confirm this? 68.51.88.6 23:39, June 14, 2010 (UTC)

I outright refused to tell Autumn the code and the dead scientist was still there. Doesn't appear to be related. 98.117.45.62 01:44, July 18, 2010 (UTC)

If you recall, he said he lost another man. Implying that he lost one already. It's anyone's guess why that second one wasn't there if you gave the wrong code, but the Scientist is probably the first one to die.

Well, in my game the scientist is not dead at all. There should be a dead scientist (MQ11EnclaveScientistDEAD)but he is not. Sarah Lyons enters in combat and without a cheat it is a game breaker, as the scientist flees and can't be reached. I tried in several games and it always happens but only when Broken steel is installed. One of the many bugs I got with this add-on. Anyone else with this issue ?Croquignol 06:23, October 14, 2010 (UTC)

Dogmeat and refusing Companions[]

Whoever you choose to send in (besides yourself), you can walk in, have your companion(s) follow you, and then run out and start the airlock thing quickly, which will lock them in as well. Just wondering if anyone has gone through with this and noticed any consequences (Broken Steel required of course), such as those companions' death?

  • Actually, I just did it myself and dogmeat glitched in with me. He didn't die so I assume the same is true for any companion you lock in, as I suggested. Not sure if noteworthy but there it is.

Yeah, that definately worked for me.[]

It says in the article that you cannot send in a companion to take your place. On my PS3 version, the game allowed me to send in Charon instead of myself. There was even a section in the ending where it mentioned "The true hero" and showed a picture of Charon.

It might have something to do with the different versions, but Charon definately went in there on my PS3 version. Also, he did not die, as he is a Ghoul and immune to radiation

You can't send someone in your place (aside from Sentinel Lyons) if you don't have Broken Steel. Therefore, you must have Broken Steel. Kris (talk) 17:00, July 22, 2010 (UTC)

Loot[]

Is there any safe place for me to place my excess armor/weapons that I picked up on this quest (so I may sell them for caps)? I tried putting them in the cash register in the gift shop, but when I went back to retrieve them they were gone (luckily I had created another save file earlier) 98.227.232.84 15:50, September 4, 2010 (UTC)

Nevermind, I found out that you could leave the place and go to Megaton to drop off any excess equipment. 98.227.232.84 17:10, September 4, 2010 (UTC)

Lethal Radiation Level?[]

Could someone please explain to me how on earth does the Lone Wanderer survive the lethal radiation levels after "Take it Back!"?

Is it just me or the pulled that one right out of their arse?

Without the Broken Steel add-on you either die or Lyons does. The game just ends there, so you probably do have the add-on. But if you do have the add-on, you should know you survived because the BoS rescued you and removed the rads with their awesome technology?
~ Scribe Aurora 15:30, August 16, 2011 (UTC)

Or just because it would be impossible for Broken Steel to take place if you died. As much as I like Fallou 3 the ending is really weak and the Broken Steel makes it even weaker.--Player8 (talk) 02:47, July 29, 2012 (UTC)

Prime is actually Houdini!!![]

So I was playing this mission earlier today, on the XBox, and I got to the part where after the first bridge, there's the first turn where you are greeted with Enclave solders in the side building. I ran ahead of Prime, with the lady and Fawkes. The car on the corner exploded, and the lady with you became unconscious. Me, being the reckless one, ran down to attack the Enclave, but the Enclave didn't attack, and the electric field was invisible. I went back to see if the lady was alright, and she was. So when turning back around to head back, I noticed Prime was missing. I know Prime was out, because I followed behind him a bit until we neared the corner. Anyone else find this glitch?

~~ACFan120~~

If this glitch is true, you should add it to the page under 'bugs' with a {verify} tag next to it. If someone else has it happen to them it can stay on the page. Yes Man default 06:07, July 26, 2011 (UTC)

I can verify this, it actually just happened to me. I ran ahead of Prime tp get some killing done, approached the barrier, turned around, and Prime was completely gone. TheShotgunShogun 00:05, October 20, 2011 (UTC)

Canonal Ending[]

Broken Steel with the Lone Wanderer joining forces with the BoS to defeat the remnants of the Enclave and Sarah Lyons dying in battle not the original game (where either the Lone Wanderer or Sarah dies) is the Canonal Ending of Fallout 3 as revealed by Fallout 4.--BruceGrubb (talk) 02:14, August 16, 2020 (UTC)

A total nitpick and not contradicting what you're claiming here (as I have no idea), but the word should be 'canonical'. :D Bushwhacker2k (talk) 10:24, 13 October 2021 (UTC)
