Van Buren[]

NCR Armor was also referenced in the B.O.M.B.-001_design_document/2#Engineering (the NCR Engineer on board was wearing it). -- Porter21 (talk) 16:07, February 4, 2010 (UTC)

Are you sure? It could be pretty much everything. --Mr.Lexx(talk) 16:47, March 5, 2010 (UTC)

Mitchell?[]

Okay. The teaser apparently shows what literally happens immediately prior to the beginning of the game. The robot is Victor, digging up the player character. The vault style writing on the armor, the PIPBoy, and the fact that he's watching Victor dig up the PC, kind of suggests that the man in the armor might be Matthew, a former vault surgeon who rescues the PC. Since he may not be affiliated with NCR, I think people are jumping to conclusions by stating that it's NCR Armor.70.72.172.87 20:11, February 6, 2010 (UTC)

But why would a Vault Doctor be so heavily armed and armored? He's got a robot for protection. Nitty Tok. 20:08, February 6, 2010 (UTC)
Being that well armed and armored is a good idea for ANYONE venturing into the wastes, no matter their home or faction. Simply put, there's all sorts of critters and neerdowells that would like nothing more than to ensure you take a dirtnap. You'd have to be incredibly daft to venture out into the desert without some sort of armor and weapon. TestECull 18:13, April 18, 2010 (UTC)
The robot probably is Victor, but I don't think A7 is Mitchell. Still, maybe it's better to move this to A7 Armor for now. Ausir(talk) 20:11, February 6, 2010 (UTC)
By the way, its not a pipboy, its a leather pouch strapped to the arm look on the different pics, M.roc 07:45, May 9, 2010 (UTC)

Why would he be in front of an NCR flag if he wasn't somehow involved with them? 184.12.78.21

Bear?[]

The armor is on the cover of the new OXM issue. Can anyone else confirm that there is part of the NCR bear over the star on the guy's shoulder pad? If so, then this must be an NCR armor. Ausir(talk) 20:44, February 11, 2010 (UTC)

The glare isn't making it any easier to identify. Might just be a bunch of stars. Nitty Tok. 18:16, February 13, 2010 (UTC)
You can clearly see bear paws here. Ausir(talk) 22:13, February 13, 2010 (UTC)
It's not like NCR's bear, which is on four legs. Maybe it's an NCR splinter group? Maybe Carlson got popped and NCR's a right-wing, half Enclave paramilitary group? Nitty Tok. 00:42, February 15, 2010 (UTC)

That guy in the screenshots really reminds me of the Metrocops found in Half Life 2 and it's episodes. Looks kinda cool, I might just wear that armor until mods pop in better looking pieces.TestECull 18:14, April 18, 2010 (UTC)

Do we even know if there will be mods for New Vegas? I doubt the GECK will work, since the engine has likely been tweaked, so if Obsidian doesn't release there own, no chance of mods. Sparrow475 19:55, June 16, 2010 (UTC)

In Game?[]

To my knowledge there haven't been any actual ingame screenshots of this armor. Is it even going to be in the game? I would assume so considering the amount of promotional material which has it, and the Brotherhood armor seen in Fallout 3's trailers was seen in the game, but who knows?71.234.106.119 07:42, May 13, 2010 (UTC)

Of course it will be. What with all the pictures of it we're getting I'd say it's a common outfit, like the brotherhood armor. For the the longest time that was all we ever saw in Fallout 3 previews. So fo-sho. I'm totally gonna wear this when I find it.

Tycho[]

Tycho is described as "a man in dusty leather armor with a trenchcoat and gas mask". Could this possibly be a reference to either him or the Desert Rangers themselves? Insincerity 05:35, July 11, 2010 (UTC)

im gonna go with yes, the armour is to similiar to the description to be a coincidence. and it should be noted that the top half seems to resemble the combat armor a bit. which is what tycho appeared to wear in game. ralok 03:31, August 9, 2010 (UTC)

We don't really know that yet, but let's hope that if the night vision makes it into the game, it doesn't look like this:
Peepers in use

This was taken in the lobby of Galaxy News Radio with The Peepers equipped. --Kris User Hola 19:30, September 9, 2010 (UTC)

IntactGardenGnome said NVGs were in the game, and he saw it at PAX, not in the leaked intro or Qore, so its possibly integrated in the desert helmet, maybe a replacement or compliment the pipboy light along with the same hotkey? (on controllers anyways)LK Tien 03:11, September 11, 2010 (UTC)

Well, in the qore video it shows him flipping the helmet on and the eyes lighing up and then he shoots that legion soldier in the dark, so it might be built into the helmet and be a armor mod or something.Grand Cookie 08:34, September 11, 2010 (UTC)

NCR?[]

How do we know this is a generic NCR uniform? I always thought it was just one character who would be playing a major role in the story. Even if it is worn by many NCR do we know anything about why some wear it and others wear barretts?

There are more people with these clothes in the game. Beside this, on one screen is a kind of bear with star visible on his shoulder, which makes it more likely, that these people are from the NCR faction.--Mr.Lexx(talk) 12:10, September 24, 2010 (UTC)

Why do they not give a full pic of the in game trench coat ?

I think the desert armour guy maybe be a rouge ncr ranger or maybe chief hanlon.[]

right they already announced kris kristoftsen was playing a disgruntled old soldier who maybe the chief of the ncr rangers.or maybe the man is a rouge ncr ranger playing ceasers legion and the ncr against eachother for his own benifeth it is already known ncr Rangers go rouge and have lots of bountys on them. But i still think its chief hanlon he might even be mr.houses personel body guard like mr.burke was Alistar Tepennys personel Assistant id love to know who you guys think he is.

I think he/she is an ex NCR ranger. In all of the screen shots he/she is located next to or on the welcome to new Vegas sign so I think that's where he/she will be located.

Chief Hanlon from Fallout 3? Absolutely zero chance of that. --Kris User Hola 15:40, September 26, 2010 (UTC)
Just like the unnamed BOS soldier in the fallout intro had a name....oh wait? It is just a promotion character. Show a guy in cool armor so you can sell more games. This "man" will be nowhere.--HelpMeRhonda213 05:05, October 12, 2010 (UTC)

Hermes - Helmet[]

Would it be notable to point out that if you brighten the antenna on the helmet in this picture it shows H3RM35 - (HERMES?) http://fallout.fandom.com/wiki/Hermes. Could the armor be what is detailed in the article?

Unique armor[]

is the armor unique, or easy to find. I REALLY want it, so I must know. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Deathclawpoop 01:23, October 17, 2010 (UTC)

I´ve been playing for 18 hours untill now, and no sign of it. anyone found it?

LOCATION PLEASE!

i found a nrc veteran ranger with that cloth all i did was Live grenade kill then i stole his armor

I don't have the game yet but it's currently being shipping to me, and when I get it I want this armour... But... I know where to get it and who is carrying it but how can I kill one without making the NCR hate my guts? I want to be on their side for my first playthrough...Shoot Gunner 01:25, October 21, 2010 (UTC)

Camp Forlorn Hope. Theres a Ranger stationed on a raised tower to the left when you leave the command tent. Just hide behind the sandbags on top and plant a grenade. It's far enough away and too subtle for anyone to notice. I did that, then walked back into the camp with my new armour and noone batted an eyelid --Pratstercs 21:08, October 23, 2010 (UTC)

Locations[]

I have the official guide, and unfortunately it doesnt give any locations where the armor can just be picked up, i have literally scanned cover to cover. My only advice is to either reverse pickpocket, or lure an enemy to a ranger post in the hope that the veteran rangers carrying the armor die. They're hard as f***ing nails though. If you kill them while stealthed from a distance do you still incur a reputation penalty?

yep you do it sucks i just tried that at the delta camp i as soon as he died with a anit material to the head it set me back to neutral - N7 Battlemaster

So there's no way to get it legitimately without killing NCR rangers? Not even as a reward? That really, really sucks from a roleplaying standpoint.

Seems the only legit way to get is is to get the key to pick up the set in the NCR Safehouse. You need to get a good rep for the NCR and do jobs for Colonel Hsu at Camp Macarren. The armour is in pretty low condition and the only way to repair it without finding and killing an NCR Veteran Ranger is to get the Jury Rigging Perk.--A Pickering 21:07, January 5, 2011 (UTC)

LAPD SWAT?[]

Should we add the fact that on the chest portion of the armor their is partial lettering spelling out APD WAT, if so should we speculate that it is, in fact refurbished riot armor? 71.105.140.83 20:25, October 23, 2010 (UTC)

It IS riot armour. It's on one of the loading screens that it is Pre-War Riot armour with the classic black trenchcoat over the top. It would make sense for the NCR to be wearing Los Angeles stuff too. --Pratstercs 21:05, October 23, 2010 (UTC)

Oh, okay. But has anybody put that on the article? Just a little mention in the notes page is all... 71.105.140.83 06:29, October 24, 2010 (UTC)

Actually, it reads APD OT, and with a little effort you can see the missing L and RI, so LAPD RIOT.

Yeah, the armor can be confirmed to say LADP RIOT, as when you drop the armor on the ground, you can clearly see LADP RIOT Btron4ever 04:01, November 20, 2010 (UTC)

Getting armor without lossing reputation?[]

The armor looks more then awesome so I was wondering if there is a way to get the armor with reputation loss. I have tried to push one of a cliff but I realized that the only way to get the armor after that is to jump off the cliff and the results were pretty "broken". ---Legion- 02:32, October 24, 2010 (UTC)

there is one way to get it with no reputation loss at any kind (and its also no faction) if you habe Hones hearts go to the end of Stone Bones Cave lock for footlocker next to it there is a Desert Ranger combat armor

Level Veterans appear with armor[]

I am actually just a level 12 and Veterans have appeared all over wearing the armor. Also I have gotten the NCR Ranger combat armor without rep loss by using a stealth boy and putting a frag mine in their pocket, I made sure I was hidden my current rep with them is 'Liked' and I got the Veteran at Ranger station Echo, the one with ghouls and Delta.

Thanks for the help for everyone (including me) who wanted the armor. Also will a frag grenade do the trick as well? ---Legion- 16:15, October 24, 2010 (UTC)

Anything that changes to "Live [item]" when pickpocketed will do fine. Just make sure you save before you attempt it incase someone sees you or the ranger detects you. Pratstercs 12:12, October 25, 2010 (UTC)

Night vision[]

Can the helmet actually give you night vision, or was that entirely for cinematic purposes? YuriKaslov-M1911 small Yuri Kaslov 15:58, October 24, 2010 (UTC)

I am pretty sure that there isn't any night vision for it. If there was, someone would have comfirmed it by now. ---Legion- 16:17, October 24, 2010 (UTC)

That seems sort of odd, since night vision is built into the game. There's cateye, night vision scope, and even a perk that gives you night vision. Maybe it works like the night vision scope or the perk- it only comes on in the dark?--71.234.106.119 18:34, October 24, 2010 (UTC)

Yea definitely! But be sure you save before trying any of the ways because if they catch you you do lose rep with the NCR. But yes a frag grenade will work, I tried it for you so I know it works. —Preceding comment was unsigned. Please sign your posts with ~~~~!

How is the trench coat black?[]

In most of the artwork and screenshots I have seen of the armor, the trench coat is no where near black. It is like a dark brown. If you look at the screenshot in the article you will see that it looks nothing of black but brown. Permission to switch black to dark brown in the article? ---Legion- 16:19, October 24, 2010 (UTC)

It says in the loading screens that it is supposed to be the traditional black trenchcoat of the Desert Rangers, so the brown colouring is probably just wear and tear from being in the Mojave Wasteland Pratstercs 12:06, October 25, 2010 (UTC)

Desert Ranger[]

The article says that this was the armor of the Desert Rangers before they merged with the NCR rangers, but I don't think this is the case. What's the source for this claim? Is it that statue at the Mojave outpost? If so, I think it may have been misinterpreted. I would argue that this armor was always from the NCR. After all, the chestpiece even says "LAPD SWAT" on it, although that's covered up partially, so you have to extrapolate. And why would it make sense for the independent Desert Rangers to have superior tech than the NCR rangers at the time of unification? The statue that resembles this armor therefore represents the NCR half of the unification, and the guy with the cowboy hat represents the Desert Ranger.--Resplendant Securitron 18:40, October 24, 2010 (UTC)

It actully is a desert ranger because if you talk to Cass and ask about the 'fucking statue' if you have high enough rep with the NCR you have the option to correct her by saying that the are both rangers, one desert and one NCR.

And also, the NCR rangers in Fallout 2 worn combat armor reinforced and not this armor. Itachou [~talk~] 14:21, October 25, 2010 (UTC)

This is what i think. In loading screens, it says that the ranger black armor is a combination of the desert rangers trench coat and NCR ranger combat armor (or it said advanced polymer blabbity blah blah). So i'm guessing that the statue with teh trench coat is the desert ranger, but technically, all that high tech shit came with the union. The reason for the desert ranger statue wearing the "modern" ranger combat armor is prolly an oversight on part of the devs.
Right, but that dialog with Cass never specifies which is which. Although this armor isn't exactly reinforced combat armor, it's still a type of combat armor and has comparable stats, so I could see NCR rangers wearing the armor, at least. Now it might not be an oversight. It's possible that the guy with the NCR Ranger Combat Armor is actually a desert ranger, and that as part of the deal to absorb the desert rangers into the NCR, the NCR gave them a supply of LAPD riot armor to wear, and this is why the statue shows the desert ranger with the nice armor. The Desert rangers at the time would already have been veterans at their craft, and as a consequence many of the Veteran Rangers are probably former Desert Rangers, hence why the outfit became the uniform of the Veteran Rangers. There's also another possibility, it could be LVPD riot armor, looted from New Vegas long before the NCR ever went there. The "LA" in "LAPD" is covered up. The reason it's thought to be LAPD riot armor is because a preview listed it as that, but I think they were talking about what is known as Ranger Patrol armor in that article.--Resplendant Securitron 06:37, November 6, 2010 (UTC)

The fact that the uniform in comprised of a gas mask and helmet combo, an oldier then hell duster, a set of pre-war Las Vegas Police Department Riot Armor and a dirty, torn-up pair of blue-jeans, it is most likely that it is former Desert Rangers armor and they just keep wearing them because: A. It looks super cool and super badass. B. They couldn't really get any better gear (Logic behide this: "If it lasted this long, it's probally the best your going to find any time soon.").

I just wish that they had made a pair of it that didn't have the NCR logo on it anywhere, had less weathered look (the Leather Armor has black leather on it, they could have just made the duster a faded black color insteid of a ancient brown color) and didn't act as a disguise so I could wear it everywhere and not get shot just for wearing it (Example: Hidden Valley). - Texas Ranger 19:59, November 13, 2010 (UTC)

It reminds me of the trenchcoat that Harrison Ford wears in "Blade Runner", and the gun he uses in the movie looks A LOT like the 5.56 pistol.--BerserKilR 19:20, November 14, 2011 (UTC)

DT 4[]

So yes this will only reduce 4 incoming damage, useful against automatic rifles, useless against sniper and hunting rifles.

Guess this is what we get for looking cool, you'd rather be stuck in a scrap can aka power armor for the rest of your life if you relied on DT to survive.Wertoret 14:13, October 25, 2010 (UTC)

uhh..the armor has a 20 dt, the HELMET has 4 dt, more than most helmets, and enemys aim at the chest alot. Toolazytomakeaaccount 02:29, October 26, 2010 (UTC)

Don't forget that your DT stacks. I don't know if it works differently for NPCs, but if you wear armor and helmet you'll have 24DT listed on your pip boy- this applies to your head as well. NPCs may itemize their DT but I don't know. If you get the NEMEAN sub-dermal armor you will have a base DT of 4 all the time, and with this armor it would be 28, equal to wearing just the Remnants APA. Of course, you could have a DT of 40 with the NEMEAN implant and the full suit of Remnants Armor, and possibly even higher if you take multiple ranks of toughness. Combine this with a dose of Med-X and a dose of Slasher, and you can have both DT AND DR, with 40+ DT and 50DR. Talk about a bullet sponge!--Resplendant Securitron 06:43, November 6, 2010 (UTC)

Weapon Glitch[]

Is anyone else noticing that some 2-handed guns go inside the back of the coat when you holster them on your back? My character uses sniper rifles, and the Hunting Rifle and Anti-material Rifle do this, and it looks like shit. Interestingly enough, the Sniper model (normal and Gobi Campaign Scout Rifle) does not seem to have this clipping problem. --HappyToast 04:02, October 26, 2010 (UTC)

Just noticed it as well. Found my first set a few minutes ago and when I went to equip Ratslayer, it clipped into the trench coat. Not the awesome effect I was hoping for. I'll add it to the page, as I've confirmed it with a few other people.--Papertreeprophet 08:19, October 27, 2010 (UTC)

I think that this armor was supposed to have the same "weapon holstering" animations of the Ranger Patrol armor, NCR Salvaged Power Armor, and other Power Armor suit variants. I was looking at all my NCR clothing then when I put on my Patrol Armor (there is a glitch with the Patrol Armor which causes the weapons to stay holstered as they would on Patrol armor when you wear for example: Ranger Vest Outfit) the weapons fit perfectly the moment I equipped the NCR Combat Armor. So in that case the weapons are off the back of the player by about a half a foot maybe, but when I equipped the Ranger Combat Armor it fit perfectly on its back, so I assume that the holster animation was messed up when it was being developed --Forerunner93 18:40, April 14, 2011 (UTC)

Acquiring the Armor no Reputation Loss[]

After a ton of attempts to snipe a vet without reputation loss at Camp Forlorn Hope, I gave up and continued the game I was fooling around and went to Ranger Station Delta and hide in the nearby rocks one-shoted the vet while everyone else was sleeping no rep loss and the other members of the station completely ignored me. I was shocked didn't expect it would work. I reloaded the save 3 times and every time it played out the same I sniped he died they all turned red for about 10-20 seconds they turn blue and I took the armor hope this helps.

Does anyone know if the helmet/mask were either inspired or based off any REAL life set? Id love to get the helmet myself.

If you really want to get it with no karma loss, just RPP some Power Armor onto him, then fast travel away and come back. You'll be able to pickpocket the armor out of his inventory afterward. It will make many tries, but it is possible. I recommend wearing recon/Chinese Stealth Armor, using a stealth boy, and reading a La Fantoma stealth magazine, and then saving your game, before you attempt, as it will maximize your chances.--Resplendant Securitron 06:45, November 6, 2010 (UTC)

Note: This technique really does work! After trying it in several places with different weapons I've come to this conclusion: There are three factors contributing here, the rest is time and circumstance. You need to be hidden, you need to use a silenced weapon, and you need to take down the Ranger quickly (preferrably in one VATS). For me, the best location was Camp Golf, late at night; at higher levels NCR Rangers will be inside the building, and they will go to sleep. I entered a room, hid (Sneak = (for me) 49), and shot the Ranger at point blank range with a Silenced 12.7mm pistol. No one noticed, and I was able to walk out with the armour and reputation intact!

I was able to kill a Vet with no Karma/Reputation loss by sneaking up and punching him with the Power Glove. I almost wiped out all the Vets in the Camp Golf hotel trying to get the armor and helmet up to 100% condition. You'd think the Power Glove would make a lot of noise, being pneumatic and all. -Malus X 04:46, November 7, 2010 (UTC)
Seems the only legit way to get is is to get the key to pick up the set in the NCR Safehouse. You need to get a good rep for the NCR and do jobs for Colonel Hsu at Camp Macarren. The armour is in pretty low condition and the only way to repair it without finding and killing an NCR Veteran Ranger is to get the Jury Rigging Perk.--A Pickering 21:13, January 5, 2011 (UTC)

Reality?[]

Does anyone know if the helmet/mask were either inspired or based off any REAL life set? Id love to get the helmet myself.

i would assume the helmet is based off some form of a army issue gas mask, as for the rest id also guess, just a basic trench coat and riot armor, i can't be sure though. Toolazytomakeaaccount 09:32, November 3, 2010 (UTC)

Panzer Cop Resemblence?[]

I think the helmet looks a lot like the helmet of the "Protect Gear" from Kerberos Panzer Cop. Or rather the ones from the anime adaptation called Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade.
Here is a pic. And here are two images of a
miniature I found on the net.
Any thoughts on that? DAud IcI 20:27, November 4, 2010 (UTC)

Could be, but the glowing-eyes gas mask is a fairly generic art concept amongst sci-fi and dystopian fiction. Personally, I think the resemblence is vauge. The14th 18:26, November 6, 2010 (UTC)
If you want to call that a reference/resemblance, then we could also say that they got the idea from the Helghast soldiers of Killzone and Killzone 2. I'm fairly certain that this is just a coincidence. 98.180.4.125 02:55, November 7, 2010 (UTC)
I could, but it has been noted by critiques that the Helghast is imitating the Jin-Roh version of the Protect Gear.(See in Protect Gear Wikipedia article here and here)
I agree on that the glowing eye stuff isn't rare, but what about that and the military helmet combined? I've never seen such headgear except in KillZone, Jin-Roh and New Vegas. If you could point out more that would be great, because I'm a big fan of the design. DAud IcI 12:46, November 7, 2010 (UTC)

If it is a reference to anything I think it is a reference to the rivethead subculture, given that tycho, with his goggles, body armor, gas mask, and trenchcoat, sounds just like a rivethead, and there is a city called Rivet City in fallout 3, I think that at least someone on the design team listens to industrial, since there have been references to both Nine Inch Nails and Ministry in the games. plus I feel like baselessly speculating that all of the rangers might have been Rivetheads, since one of the largest Rivethead clubs in the world is in los angeles and is called Das Bunker, and is literally a bunker from what i understand, so the rivethead subculture could literally survive a nuclear apocalypse... actually they look like they already have, unsigned

The rangers were a survivalist contingent in Nevada, not a band of faux soldiers that can't tell clean water from irradiated water. Personal_Sig_Image.gif Tagaziel (call!) 09:31, November 9, 2010 (UTC)
I am not familiar with the genre, but isn't industrial electric music? So far it seems such thing as "any music past 50's mainstream" doesn't exist in this universe. (Which is bloody unrealistic in my opinion.) Therefore industrial/rivethead subculture couldn't even emerge let alone make any bunker to survive.
I noticed that they mentioned hippies at some point in fallout 3 and there are hippie things written on the bunkers in hidden valley, I think there were some similarities after the divergence, also while I think that the rangers armor might have it's aesthetics based on the way rivetheads dress, I was just mentioning that the rivethead subculture could have survived a nuclear apocalypse because I thought it was mildly funny, also I think that someone at black isle probably just listens to industrial a little or just saw a rivethead on the bus or something, I don't think that the rangers have any interest in music. unsigned... again (i just don't have an account)

Helmet Repair[]

Sure, the armor can be repaired as long as you go to Mick, Knight, Raul, whoever. But what about fixing up the helmet? Don't tell me I have to whack even more of these guys to patch the helmet up. Malus X 23:33, November 5, 2010 (UTC)

I think u can repair the helmet with these merchants or with other rangers helmets, and with the jury riggin, any helmet and even glasses!! --Marcelolzao97 05:05, November 6, 2010 (UTC)
So far, no NPC I found who repairs things will repair a Ranger Helmet. Same can be said for the Sheriff's Duster. Some other clothes won't be repaired unless you repair them yourself. Yes, Jury Rigging helps, but I was asking for people who unfortunately don't have that Perk. -Malus X 22:51, November 6, 2010 (UTC)
I can offer some confirmation that no NPCs will repair the helmet. It simply doesn't appear in the repair list. Perhaps it's a bug, but I don't know. It would appear that if you want this armor and you don't have the Jury Rigging perk, you can't get it repaired unless you keep offing Veteran Rangers. Personally, I think it was very poorly played of Bethesda/Obsidian/whoever was behind this sort of decision to showcase this armor in all their trailers and videos for the game to the point where it practically became a mascot, and then make the armor so utterly difficult to obtain/maintain. Orra 03:09, November 7, 2010 (UTC)
It'll appear in my game's list for repairs, but it'll never be highlighted and the cost would be 0. My guess is that if it has no selling value, it won't be repairable, since the value of it is -- when trying to sell stuff. -Malus X 04:42, November 7, 2010 (UTC)
For me atleast, any piece of clothing/ armour that has a -- somewere on its stats (Value, DT/ DR, Weight) can not be repaired by NPC's. AR700SAW 08:36, November 7, 2010 (UTC)
An unofficial bugfix patch for the PC added in a value for the helmet and now it can be repaired at merchants. Therefore, the missing value is the cause. --75.102.128.9 04:57, January 20, 2011 (UTC)

Hitchhiker's Guide Reference, need confirmation. Should we put it in the article?[]

I'm gonna need confirmation on this since I have the Wild Wasteland trait, and most pop culture references were removed from "normal gameplay" and put into that trait, but on my helmet it says 42, which is a pretty obvious reference to Hitchhiker's Guide. I'm posting this from the Steam Overlay, so I'll post pics later (if I can figure out how). I'm not sure of the copyright status of screenshots. Is it okay to post them?

Ebolapie 04:36, November 7, 2010 (UTC)

Just because something has a 42, it doesn't mean it's a HHGttG reference. If it was, I'm sure there's be other references to it in the game. -Malus X 04:39, November 7, 2010 (UTC)
I have to agree with Malus X. HHGttG doesn't own the number 42, and assuming that a helmet with the number 42 on it is an "obvious reference" to it is a bit of a stretch. Orra 16:45, November 7, 2010 (UTC)

Respawning Vet Rangers?[]

Basically I want a reliable supply of NCR Ranger Combat Armor. I pretty much wiped out House Resort, waited for like 4 or 5 days, everyone was still dead in their beds. I found two vets roaming around, but I am almost positive that I missed them in my sweep. Will the rangers and vet rangers in House Resort ever respawn? Are there any locations where the vets will continually respawn? FalloutJRob 00:43, November 22, 2010 (UTC)

I have discovered recently that all Ranger Stations with the exception of Delta respawn all generic NPC's, including Veteran Rangers. I am still testing the vets for respawning in House Resort. FalloutJRob 22:54, November 23, 2010 (UTC)

Veteran Rangers respawn at all Ranger Stations except Foxtrot for me, as I never saw one there at all. Odd. They also respawn at Camp Forlorn Hope. The one in the Sniper's tower overlooking the graveyard is easy to get there. ;)--86.44.130.208 08:35, December 1, 2010 (UTC)

Obtaining it[]

Since the strategies for obtaining it don't last five minutes in the real article (which I would like to point out that that information would be useful to someone visiting the site, who most likely will never see the talk page...) one easy way of getting it is to dismiss a companion, plant a live C4 on them (or 2 if necessary) rehire them, have them stand next to the NCR Ranger and wait there, then blow it up. No faction loss, little karma loss, and NCR ranger combat armor. make sure you don't do it on hardcore though, else your companion dies.

With the version 1.02 patch it is now located in the NCR Ranger Safehouse if you obtain the key from Col. James Hsu by helping the NCR.--BattleBen 02:31, December 11, 2010 (UTC)

Disguise vs Reputation[]

Think it should be addressed that while wearing a disguise renders you neutral, removing it sets fame back to what you previously had. Before last patch (December 13 or so) I also noted that wearing a disguise might simply cause a drop of fame lvl rather than completely neutral (if liked, you become accepted, removing and you are liked again). Also, is it possible to gain higher lvls of fame while using the disguise (like being neutral with disguise, then climb up)? --Radnus 81.205.186.16 19:11, December 15, 2010 (UTC)

When does this appear, again?[]

Okay, so, after about 200 hours of gameplay, I finally began to ask myself, "Where is that armor?" It's on the cover of the box, for crying out loud, and I've never seen it even once in the game. And I'm not one to miss these kinds of things. So I finally looked it up on the wiki, and the article said that the armor only starts to appear after a certain point in the main quest. So I thought, "Oh, okay, cool, that explains that then," and continued about my business exploring the Mojave and doing sidequests.

Now, though, fifty hours of gameplay later, I'm actually advancing the main quest, and I figured, "Gee, I sure wish I could remember what point in the game that armor starts popping up." So, I looked up the article again, and it's been changed to say that it can be obtained "throughout the game." Double-checking to make sure my game hadn't magically updated itself with the article, I traveled to several Ranger Stations other NCR installations to search for it. Despite what the page says, this armor is still not in my game. What gives? Science-Doer 01:08, December 18, 2010 (UTC)

Oh wow, nevermind. It did, in fact, magically appear on a shelf in the NCR Ranger Safehouse. I am at a loss for words. Science-Doer 01:16, December 18, 2010 (UTC)

Anyone know? It looks like some sort of gas mask with some infrared vision goggles on it. It looks badass nonetheless. I wish I had this armor in real life. I'd so become a sniper.

Road North of Quarry Junction?[]

Exactly where is this point where the dead Ranger Veteran and the Deathclaws apparently appear? I've extincted the entire Deathclaw population of Quarry Junction. No way out other than the way I got in so far as I can see. I've checked the open area the railway lines go through before heading to New Vegas... where the billboards and the crashed truck are, and another Deathclaw spot... but no Ranger Veteran there either. I've been along the East-West roads north of Quarry Junction on the map, from Junction 15 Railway Station all the way over to Vault 19. No Ranger Veteran. My character is level 24 at the moment, for the record. My game is fully patched, XBox 360 version. WHERE IS THE DEAD RANGER VETERAN?! 87.194.75.168 22:33, February 23, 2011 (UTC)

I have not found him either, and im level 30!! I searched that whole road too.

No leg armor[]

Has anyone noticed that this armor has no visible plates protecting the legs, it seems to me like it would be a big disadvantage compared to all other forms of combat armor which all have some kind of leg armor (even vault security armor has knee pads).

Why should it? Rangers rely on mobility and speed, not brute force to win, so they don't need two inches of steel on everything. Take that, Brotherhood. Personal_Sig_Image.gif Tagaziel (call!) 07:38, May 17, 2011 (UTC)

Who Gave This to Cops?[]

I know it's expensive and all, but who looked at this riot armor apparently capable of stopping a rifle bullet, bending metal blunt weapons out of shape and deflecting sharp objects and shrapnel and said "You know what situation this would be best in? Fighting against unorganized riots where the opposition are unlikely to have large-caliber firearms, and not a war-zone."? Nobody ever thought that this armor would be more useful against the Chinese in Anchorage? I thought people were meant to be fighting over resources, no matter how brutal the fighting gets, in a situation where people would willingly shell out (super-ninja stealth pun, activate!) to protect their oil? It just seems like it'd be a lot easier to give soldiers this than spend years developing Powered Armor, and more cost effective, as well as not requiring the operator to have advanced training that only one in ten people will receive. I get that the Canadian Partisans were being annoying and all, but is it really necessary to develop armor superior to your current model (which I will remind you is effectively a wearable tank) to take them on? Police in England just have shoulder-plates, it gets them by well enough. Couldn't the Military Police in Canada just wear combat armor, which was already being mass-produced anyway, was WAY more cost-effective, and was widely available on basically all markets? That way, the American government would be able to sell the Power Armor (which would be inferior to the Ranger Armor) on the market at super-high prices to countries fighting their own wars, but if they ever turned on America, the Riot Armor soldiers and the Combat Armor-wearing Military Police would result in a curb-stomp battle, as the enemy would have blown their military budget on purchasing the Power Armor, resulting in the Americans having vastly superior artillery and vehicles, but if the country had enough money to begin with, they wouldn't have bought the Power Armor! So, that's an extra country under American rule, as well as all their resources, and America has more money as well as the best armor in the modern world. It's a win-win. Who knows, if they did this, they may very well have taken down China before the situation got bad enough to launch the nukes, and survived long enough to develop alternate energy sources, preventing the apocalypse as we know it!

And that is how a slip up in Marketing resulted in the apocalypse. If only Jimmy had taken his coffee that day, he wouldn't have sent the armor to the LAPD instead of Anchorage and ushered forth all the death and suffering in a Fallout game ever. That's right, I'm talking to you, Jimmy, and I'm afraid the department will be getting severe pay reductions for this. Way to go, dick. --Captain tweed 01:47, June 8, 2011 (UTC)

Note the presence of the Desert Ranger combat armor which was used by the United States Marine Corps during the Resource Wars which was apparently made by the same manufacturer as what is know known as NCR Ranger Combat Armor. I wouldn't be surprised if the manufacturer provided armor to the USMC first then sold a toned down version of the armor to the LAPD at a later date, while there is no proof of this as of yet it is nonetheless a possibility. I do agree that riot armor is typically not built to the same let alone a superior standard to military body armor (at least in the here and now) although i should point out that SWAT armor usually provides better protection than military armor but at the expense of weight and mobility since SWAT teams don't need the same amount of mobility as soldiers do and who knows maybe LAPD SWAT and Riot units were equipped with the same armor for logistic reasons, then again things were getting pretty nasty on the home front before the great war and the police might have wanted some better protection as the angry rioters might have had weapons such as magnum handguns, hunting rifles 12 gauge shotguns with slug rounds or even Type 93 Chinese Assault Rifles. Of course almost all of of what I have typed is speculation with little or no proof, but it does make for interesting conversation. --BattleBen 06:25, June 8, 2011 (UTC)

Boomer's Selling?[]

I traveled to the Boomer's Munitions and Storage to buy a Fat Man, and a suit of NCR Ranger Combat Armour caught my eye in the Apparel section. I'm wondering if this is in anyway a result of the game, or if perhaps I had just sold it to them previously, forgotten about it, and returned before the inventory could reset.

Can't believe no on has pointed this out yet..[]

I've never beaten FNV (the amount of console-breaking glitches is too intimidating for me), but just seeing the picture at the beginning of the page made me think of Silhouette from Destroy All Humans!. Here's a pic, to compare them a little. http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://images4.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20110428074602/destroyallhumans/images/8/8c/Silhouette_%281%29.jpg&imgrefurl=http://destroyallhumans.fandom.com/wiki/File:Silhouette_%281%29.jpg&usg=__npCuL5B7_gloME10V5IMS_Cw9IY=&h=358&w=469&sz=10&hl=en&start=15&sig2=umb88sqv6bfrmJUp_LuE5Q&zoom=1&tbnid=W60LJ-Hj5INU6M:&tbnh=115&tbnw=153&ei=LFILTvznHsmcgQeRgfGKAg&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dsilhouette%2Bdestroy%2Ball%2Bhumans%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN%26biw%3D1024%26bih%3D569%26tbm%3Disch&um=1&itbs=1&iact=rc&dur=247&page=2&ndsp=16&ved=1t:429,r:0,s:15&tx=12&ty=73 Anyone else see this? Besides the hat and the fact that Silhouette is a girl, I think it's almost uncanny.

That may be so but I think this is just a fluke. I doubt there's any intended resemblance or reference shared between these two.

The Gas-Mask-Longcoat look is quite popular. The trench coat in Destroy All Humans! is there because it's associated with shadowy government organizations, with the gas-mask most probably to remain anonymous. The Gas-Mask-Longcoat look is in FNV because it's cool, fits into the general western theme of the outer areas of the Mojave, and, I'd imagine, helps keep the wearer warm during cold desert nights, with the gas-mask there for the fact that it looks cool and the massive amounts of radiation a Ranger's bound to come across, which could kill him if he didn't have any RadAway. Just a coincidence they look slightly similar. --Captain tweed 18:58, July 23, 2011 (UTC)

Low-light vision[]

why does the description on the page say NCR Ranger combat armor has low-light vision? it obviously doesn't and even say so in the notes section, is there a reason for that?

Because it's repeatedly stated in-game that it does? Personal_Sig_Image.gif Tagaziel (call!) 14:56, August 2, 2011 (UTC)

You know what they should have done? Once you wear the helmet, instead of your pip-boy light turning on, your eyes would turn on and provide the same type of lighting as your pip-boy. It may not be low-light vision, but it's at least a good way to make yourself look cooler with glowing red eyes. --Felix Brehh 22:04, September 8, 2011 (UTC)

Black Ranger Combat Armor?[]

I've been trying to find it, and was told it was given to you by Seargent Dhari, or whatever to the NCR Safehouse, and no, don't come telling me: "Kill a ranger and get it." That's not how it works, this is the BLACK ranger armor, not standard brown, so if anyone has any good tips, write them below.

It does not exist. Personal_Sig_Image.gif Tagaziel (call!) 14:00, October 19, 2011 (UTC)

When they call it the "Black" armor, it's because the chest is made of black LAPD riot armor, not the brown trench coat. You must have not understood it well, but yes, the black armor s the one you see on the cover of the Fallout: New Vegas game, and the one all NCR veteran rangers wear. There is no such thing as a black trench coat with the black armor. --Felix BrehhUser talk:Felix Brehh 21:47, October 19, 2011 (UTC)
