[In fallout 3] this perk if taken early on will give you a bit consistant edge against the baddies you're fighting all the way to 20th level and will reduce the need to wander the wastes leveling up.-accountless avenger

Untitled[]

Sorry if I'm disagreeing with loads of fallout 3 players but I think that comprehension is 10x as useful as this and if you have comprehension then this perk is useless.

Glitched? [Solved][]

Is this perk glitched/has it been reported to glitch? Because both my boyfriend and I haven't been receiving extra skill points each level after taking it. He's been at 19 skill points for a few levels and I've been at 21 skill points for at least three levels now.--Niksilp 03:15, 26 December 2008 (UTC)

Never mind. I misunderstood what the perk does. The way that I was reading it, it seemed as if every level I would gain another three skill points (so if I was at 21, next level I'd have 24, then 27, and so on).--Niksilp 06:25, 26 December 2008 (UTC)
If you read the note section, you'l read that it is a bug that make your character get 19 points, and nothing more. So you have not read wrong, it is simply just one of Fallout 3's bugs.

Gun Nut and similar perks[]

Why take the gun nut and similar perks when if you take this at level 4 you get 16*3 or 48 extra skill points over the rest of your levels compared to the 10 or 15 point boost the others give? One perk for 10 skill points or one for up to 48? I know what I pick every time. Somebody 07:14, 9 February 2009 (UTC)

Uh, well, point is you can´t take Educated multiple times and TBH most of the low level perks are crap so I still end up taking several of the "skill only" perks. Golan2781 11:34, 9 February 2009 (UTC)

How come when I level up I don't get three extra skill points??

Usefulness?[]

With the level cap being raised to 30 on Broken Steel, Educated is no longer a decent perk. To tell the truth, even before the level cap was raised, Educated was still massively overshadowed by comprehension. Even without comprehension, a level 30 character with a high intelligence that has hunted down a lot of skill books can easily get to level 100 in every skill. So Educated is now rendered pretty useless unless your character has really bad intelligence. Comprehension's usefulness is also debatable.--Grandmaster Chen 20:57, September 8, 2009 (UTC)

I have both perks (comprehension, and educated.) actually and they were both useful but i guess it depends, on personal prefrence.--Herbert the tree 21:14, September 8, 2009 (UTC)

I also had both on my previous character. If you want to max out all your skills early in the game, by all means take it. But if you're ready to grind up to level 30 and hunt down lots of skill books, it really isn't that useful.--Grandmaster Chen 21:33, September 8, 2009 (UTC)

Well i think seeing as how educated comes available at level 4 you can use that at the first of the game as skill books basicly.and then use comprehension later on in the game around 10 cause that is when its gets better skill book wise.--Herbert the tree 12:59, September 9, 2009 (UTC)

What does it do?[]

Like the poster above me, I thought you gain more skill points to be distributed per level up. What does this thing do exactly? Like, it gives you 3 skill points to all skills when you level up automatically? 86.36.49.1 13:43, May 1, 2010 (UTC)

It raises the number of skill points you're allowed to allocate by 3 every time you level up. Say you're allowed to allocate 20 points with an INT of 10. The next time you level up, you'll be able to allocate 23 points. And next time, 26 points, and so on. The thing is, this perk can be glitchy, so you may only receive the bonus 3 points only once (as this is what happened to me), so if you could only allocate 20 points before taking the perk, each subsequent time you level up you'd only be able to allocate 23 (which is still pretty good).
Even if you don't take this perk, you'd still be able to max out your skills by level 20 by having 10 INT at level 1. -- Exothesis 12:39, September 7, 2010 (UTC)

New Vegas Bug[]

It seems that in New Vegas, I only get 1 point per level. With 9 Int, I had 15 skill points per level, now I have 16. Anyone experience something similar? --Anticitizen101 15:51, October 25, 2010 (UTC)

Not that exact occurence, but yes Educated seems to a be a bit buggy. I am almost entirely certain that it has something to do with odd numbered intelligence (when the 0.5 comes into play). The 0.5 which builds up over the course of two levels is the likely culprit, my buddy had 7 intelligence (13.5 skill points per level), now he always gains 16 per level with educated (instead of 15.5 on even numbered levels). You should only have been gaining 14.5 skill points per level not 15, you'd only gain 15 on every odd numbered level (1>2 would be 14.5 2>3 would be 15 because the 0.5 stacks for 1.0 on that level). Mictlantecuhtli 16:02, October 25, 2010 (UTC)
I see, thanks. I better hightail it to NV and get the INT implant.--Anticitizen101 16:19, October 25, 2010 (UTC)
It's gotta be the 0.5, which only happens every odd numbered level so when educated is taken at lvl 4 there's a 0.5 leftover which boosts level 5 to 16.0 where it stays with 7 int (the 0.5 disappears) while 9 int should gain 17.0 at lvl 5 but instead it's 16.0 also according to your observations. So that 0.5 has got to be the culprit, another thing you can try instead of heading to vegas for implants is to take educated at an odd numbered level (before another 0.5 is gained at level 6). Mictlantecuhtli 16:46, October 25, 2010 (UTC)
You can only take perks at even-numbered levels. No more "saving for later" like in F1/2 :(
That's right, I am a bit sleepy. Take a look at the revised intelligence page, with odd numbered int you only gain that 0.5 on every odd numbered level (because they count level 1 toward the 0.5). Though it still seems a bit buggy even with you getting whole points on even numbered levels (as you said you should, with revised numbers on int get 17.0 points on level 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24, 26, 28 and 30 instead of 16.0). Mictlantecuhtli 17:52, October 25, 2010 (UTC)
Here's hoping they fix every bug/glitch in FNV. But considering the state that F3 is in... I'm not holding my breath. I don't even know what the hell hapened with UF3P. The bug tracker just died at some point. Oh yeah, and one must consider the state Obsidian/Black Isle left its previous games in (bit sleepy myself, so I ended my sentence with a preposition!). It's not looking good. Not looking good at all. --Anticitizen101 19:42, October 25, 2010 (UTC)
I can only repeat what's being said, with 10INT you get 15, with 9INT you get 14 and 15 every other level, so no bug at all I think --94.212.252.40 19:46, November 19, 2010 (UTC)

I have to agree with the last guy here. I've done a quick internet search and these wiki pages are the only place where anyone mentions a "legitimate" Educated bug. While on any other webpage I've visited similar accusations on the topic have always turned out false. As mentioned, a lot of the confusion is based on the 0.5 skill points every other level.
So as the first poster with 9 intelligence pointed out, at level 4 they got 15 skill points. Then at level 5, they only got 16 points. This looks wrong, but it's actually correct! What happened is that normally at level 5, without Educated, they would have only gotten 14 skill points. When educated was factored in, it raised the 14pts to 16pts; the correct amount. Also bare in mind that the game factors in level 1 into that 0.5 calculation. So using the example above, if you have 9pts of intelligence, you'll receive 15 skill points at level 2, -not- 14. So to reiterate the example again: this player started with 9 intelligence. When they hit level 2, the gained 15 skill points (since the game factors in level 1 toward the 0.5 skill point bonus). Then at level 3, they would have gotten 14 skill points. Then at level 4, they received 15 again. It is at this level they picked up Educated, but educated doesn't factor in until level 5. So at level 5, they normally would have received 14pts again, however, since they have Educated now, they actually receive 16 skill points.
Furthermore their is many other things that could add additional confusion, like the intelligence implant, temporary intelligence boosting items (which don't factor into the skill points you gain at a level up), or even how they keep track of track of the skill points they gained at each level. In a day or two I'm probably going to begin a new New Vegas game with a character that starts out with 4 intelligence, then I'll get the implant immediately at level 1 for 5 intelligence. Either way, I'll see if I encounter this odd-numbered-intelligence bug that is suppose to occur with Educated. --74.65.102.32 09:54, July 4, 2011 (UTC)
Same person again - didn't encounter the bug. As stated I began a new character starting with 4 intelligence, and then bought the implant at level 1 for 5 total intelligence (X-Box 360). I got 13pts at level 2, 12pts at 3, 13pts at 4, 14pts at 5, 15pts at 6, 14pts at 7, and so on. The game did it correctly. At level 5 I normally would have received 12pts, but because of Educated I received 2 more points, raising it to a total of 14. At level 6, I received 15pts, which is again, the correct amount, since I normally would have gotten 13pts (13 + 2 = 15). So far the game has continued to correctly give the right amount of skill points (level 10 now). This leads me to conclude one of two things about this topic: either A) People are just very confused about how they receive skill points when it comes to an odd numbered of intelligence. Or B) This is an infrequent bug, or a bug that was previously removed during one of the patch updates. Overall my advice to anybody reading this is not to worry about it. Again, this seems to be the only site I've found that discusses any bug such as this. In all other cases the original poster/s are just confused about how the mechanics work with each other until somebody clarifies it. --74.65.102.32 16:15, July 8, 2011 (UTC)

I also have not noticed any bugs in the latest patch of Fallout New Vegas(XBOX).
  • Char Creation: Base intelligence:8
  • LVL2: 14pts +intense training used on intelligence
  • LVL3: 14(14.5)pts
  • LVL4: 15(14.5+0.5)pts +Educated
  • LVL5: 16(16.5)pts
  • LVL6: 17(16.5+0.5)pts +implant
  • LVL7+: 17.0 pts no halfs ever again :)

Nothing out of the ordinary. Maybe the bug only occurs if you still have a half-a-point being saved after you have gotten an even intelligence and can never use that half a point ever again?-- Mortemer2112 03:18, July 20, 2011 (UTC)

Bugged again FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU-[]

I'm playing unpatched new vegas in the xbox, i'm on my second playtrough and i picked it again...it was bugged, it rises my skill points to 14 (or 15 in my first playtrough) and then stops...this also happened to me once in fallout 3 but ONLY ONCE, it's so annoying to waste a perk. --Nuke-a-Punch 03:42, January 7, 2011 (UTC)

Misleading F:NV analysis removed[]

Main page used to say that Educated was better in F:NV "since skill books are much less numerous (52 - 65 with add-on, instead of 324 in Fallout 3)."

This is misleading. While there are less skill books in vanilla F:NV, they yield many, many more skill points (each yield 3, 4 with Comprehension, versus 1 or 2 from FO3).

More to the point, the reason why Educated was relatively weak in FO3 had less to do with skill books specifically and more to with basically the entire structure of the game: Bobbleheads, numerous skill-increasing perks, and a more generous per-level skill point allotment.

Just putting that out there in case anyone disagrees with my edit.
