FIX: Force Charon to use his shotgun again[]

I ran into the bug where Charon will 'forget' that he has his shotgun and use either his knife or another weapon no matter what orders you give him. I suspect this has something to do with giving him another Combat Shotgun and then taking it back multiple times.

The fix:

  1. Clear Charon of his inventory, or else you will lose those items
  2. Turn around to face Charon
  3. Press the tilde '~' key to bring up the console
  4. Click on Charon with the mouse. You should see "Charon" (0002b8e1) at the top of the screen.
  5. Type resurrect and press Enter

A 'new' Charon will spawn and be your follower, with shotgun in hand. This 'new' Charon will also be the same level you are, as the original was. You can load him back up with his previous inventory and be on your way. --96.49.231.54 00:00, 24 June 2009 (UTC)

This method was ineffective for this player, so I clicked on him and input "additem 004c5f9 100000" into the console. He does now use his shotgun. Note that while the shells do not show in his inventory, the usual infinite supply will no longer work. As a result of this and his...let's say 'virtuous' use of ammo, you may have to do this a few times during your play-through. However, after we killed a Super mutant overlord he looted the corpse for a Tri-beam laser rifle (Fallout 3) and the shotgun disappeared entirely. This player had to give him both the shells and the shotgun to him through the console. What a pain. --Carpathian Cookie 07:03, 17 July 2009 (UTC)

Two?[]

Someone Said the item code generate Charon's Shotgun with 20 damage, and another version with 55 damage. Even if the damage of Charon's shotgun scales with his level, it's still absolutely much better than regular shotgun. Charon can kill a deathclaw/giant radscorpion from far distance by 5 shots, when he is level 17.

There are two Combat Shotguns in the GECK attributed to Charon.
The first, Editor ID "FollowersCharonShotgunScene", Form ID "0003713D", (listing only differences) has a DPS of 15, Damage of 20, Value of 90, Min Spread of 1.5, Min/Max range of 500/2000, uses normal shotgun shells, and has an effect called "FollowersCharonShotgunENCH"; the use report indicates that Charon only uses it in the scene when he kills Ahzrukhal.
The other, Editor ID "FollowersCharonShotgun", Form ID "000372B8", has a DPS of 41, damage of 55, value of 70, Min Spread of 0.5, Min/Max range of 192/640, uses special ammo Editor ID "AmmoShotgunShellRobot" (still called "Shotgun Shells"), and has no 'enchantment'; the use report indicates that this is the weapon Charon uses, there's nothing there about level.Fiddlesoup 06:08, 11 January 2009 (UTC)

Ammo ID[]

This weapon's ammo ID is 4C5F9.

Stopped Using[]

He stopped using this gun in my game, and it won't come back.

Happened to me, too (Xbox360) - he suddenly stopped using it and will only melee if I don't give him ammo and a weapon. After having him "wait" in the Capitol building so I could kill the Behemoth, I noticed he would no longer use his shotgun after seeing him firing a Laser Rifle that he had looted from a dead Talon Merc. --Baalzak 03:20, 22 February 2009 (UTC)

Maybe it was shot from his hands?Coodude26 07:21, 22 February 2009 (UTC)
Investigating a little, I found a saved game where he was still using it and figured out a way to make him "forget" that he has it. If I overload him with equipment so that I get the message "Charon can't carry any more," he will immediately equip a different weapon. If I remove the weapon he equipped from his inventory (possibly repeating this two or three times as he chooses new weapons), he will return to using his shotgun (i.e. no weapon equipped). Possibly (I haven't tested yet) if he continues this "forced" usage of another weapon for a while (through a zone transition, sleep, saved game, or similar trigger), he will permanently forget how to use it, as he has in my game. The only solution for this I've found so far is to reload from a save where he still has it. --Baalzak 16:34, 22 February 2009 (UTC)

Name[]

It's simply called "Combat Shotgun" in the game/GECK. I don't think this weapon warrants an article. Almost all weapons used by companions are non-generic (i.e. different item code). --Voidvector 06:21, 23 December 2008 (UTC)

I agree, it should be no more than a note, or paragraph, on the standard weapon / relevant NPC's page. It *is* quite different yes, but so is Fawkes' nerfed gatling. --Kaay 21:48, 24 December 2008 (UTC)
There's always Fallout 3 follower equipment where all follower weapons are listed (including Charon's), including characteristics. Could always merge the more interesting bits from this page over there and redirect.
It's the same with Mysterious Stranger's .44 magnum, by the way. // Porter21 U | T | C 09:46, 25 December 2008 (UTC)

"scales with his level" and others...[]

The statement that it scales with his level is somewhat misleading. There's only one FollowersCharonShotgun (not including the cutscene object I covered up there). The only reason the damage scales with his level is that Small Guns is one of his tag skills, so as it increases, he gradually does more damage, up to the max.

The reason for the unique firing rate (0.75 shots/sec, or 1/2 of the Combat Shotgun's 1.5 shots/sec), is because it uses a different attack animation (called "DEFAULT", but it appears to be the same as/similar to the one used by the BB Gun and Lincoln's Repeater; i.e. a lever-action animation).

Yeah, 1.5 shots per second yet the GECK calculator thinks its DPS is 35.... bah... Ash Nuke AshRandom (Talk) 15:20, 19 January 2009 (UTC)

The reason for the unique spread is the "Min Spread" is set to .5. I tested all the other variables, and only that one made a difference. The "Spread" setting is the same, "7.0000", so, I'm currently unsure how they use these two numbers.Fiddlesoup 08:18, 19 January 2009 (UTC) P.S. Also of note is the fact that it does use 5.56 rounds for its projectile and shell casing files.

Why redirect? Why lose all the info?[]

This weapon is really unique. It really deserves its own page. Its stats really differ from normal Combat Shotgun. Please, put it back! P22 06:58, October 25, 2009 (UTC)

Fixed. --Kingclyde 08:56, October 25, 2009 (UTC)
I really doubt that anything on here isn't already at Fallout 3 non-player weapons. The stats are already there, and a quick note column would explain with "Uses Lever-Rifle animation". Nitty Tok. 14:00, April 2, 2010 (UTC)

Using Charon's shotty[]

The article states "It can not be used by the Lone Wanderer." but if you give yourself the special ammo you can actually use it. In that case the ammo isn't infinite so you'll need to have more than one, but you can then load and fire the weapon without a problem. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.90.39.63 (talkcontribs). What special ammo do you mean? Also, I think that the main issue is that the gun is not obtainable without the use of console commands.
