Mitchell Hibbs was a foreman at Blackwater Mine, replaced by automation before the Great War.

Background[]

In the summer of 2077, Hibbs moved from Pittsburgh to West Virginia to accept a lucrative job offer as foreman of the Blackwater Mine.[1] Uranium was discovered in the mines which were previously believed to only hold coal deposits, and the Department of Energy took control of the location as a matter of national security. Hibbs was a loyal employee who was determined to see the mines function impressively.[2]

Site director Dr. Phillip Cotton did not inform Hibbs that his foreman position would only be temporary, with a facility objective to eventually become fully automated.[3] Hibbs' detailed the conversion of the mines into automation and the effect it had on the employees in his reports. Hibbs praised the technology for how much easier it made operating the mines and the quality of yields produced; however, he also noted increased complacency among the workforce as the automated systems reduced the amount of work actually needing to be done. Hibbs' attitude towards layoffs, including the elimination of 30 positions, was that his staff had been slacking off and were unnecessary due to technology. Hibbs was eventually replaced, as his employees had been.[4]

Appearances[]
