Lily Bell was an adventurer who lived in the Commonwealth in 2287.

Background[]

A resident of Quincy, Lily long held a dream of exploring the Commonwealth in person and creating a "Commonwealth travel guide" for prospective settlers and travelers, but did not act on this for most of her life. This changed when she met her wife Mary Jane in Quincy; the pair collided with each other while Mary Jane was exiting Guns Guns Guns with "enough firepower to kill a ten story Deathclaw" and Lily was exiting Fentons Food Stuffs with a crate of tatos, and in Lily's words, it was "love at first collision."[1]

Lily explained her dream to Mary Jane, along with her ultimate goal of seeing her idolized location of Sanctuary Hills in person (a sentimental view which Mary Jane supported but did not share), and Mary Jane agreed to help her finish her guide.[2] This worked out well; Lily "didn't take well to rules" and indulged in various vices, often ending up in dangerous situations, but Mary Jane's technical skills, cautious worldview, and custom CR-74L rifle allowed her to protect her and bail her out.[3] The pair left their home in Quincy (unknowingly avoiding the Quincy Massacre) and set out on their journey, recording information from their stops along the way.

However, it became increasingly clear as they progressed that Lily was not well, and the duo got as far as Lexington before she collapsed, later being diagnosed with terminal cancer by Doctor Sun in Diamond City, with a prognosis of at most two months left to live.[4] Despite looking for second opinions in Goodneighbor and Bunker Hill, no doctor was able to help Lily, and she chose to finish her guide off of word of mouth from caravan traders and return home, but asking Mary Jane to finish the guide in person after she died.[5]

Returning to the now Gunners-occupied Quincy, Lily died outside the town walls and was buried near the Peabody house by Mary Jane. Mary Jane then fulfilled her promise to finish the guide, taking a six-month long journey to see Sanctuary Hills, and was successful in doing so. She intended to return to Lily's grave to be with her once more, but was killed by mongrels and was unable to do so.[6]

Appearances[]

Lily Bell is mentioned only in the Fallout 4 Creation Club content "CR-74L Combat Rifle," and her grave can be found near the Peabody house.

Behind the scenes[]

Lily Bell shares her name with the person being addressed in the lyrics of "Jingle, Jangle, Jingle."

  • Historically, female vocalists covering Jingle, Jangle, Jingle, such as Dinah Stone, have left its lyrics unaltered, which adds a layer of lesbian tension to the song. The most famous of these is The Mary Macs' 1942 cover, which features male vocalists backing up the lead, Mary Lou Cook.
  • Combined with Lily Bell being married to a woman with a similar name, Mary Jane, it is possible that her given name was inspired by the lyrics of the song.
