Pip-Boy[Non-game 1] is a corporate mascot of RobCo Industries' Pip-Boy series of wearable computers. He is also alternately called Vault Boy 2000.[1]

The character is shown on the plate of the Pip-Boy 2000 device series. He has pointy ears and red hair, and wears a red and yellow jumpsuit.

He can occasionally be seen representing RobCo Industries as a whole.[2]

Appearances[]

Pip-Boy appears on RobCo's Pip-Boy devices in Fallout, Fallout 2 and Fallout 76, and in animated form in the Vault Seller's Survival Guide episodes "Meet Me in Coswald!" and "Steer the Ship!."

He also appears on the PIP-Pad, the interface of the Armageddon Rag newsletter for the canceled Project V13 (Fallout Online).

Behind the scenes[]

  • The Pip-Boy is often confused with Vault-Tec Corporation's Vault Boy, to the point where Vault Boy is called "Pip-Boy" in Fallout Tactics and Chris Avellone's Fallout Bible.
  • Leonard Boyarsky, art director of the original Fallout, clarified the confusion in an interview: I also came up with the idea/design for the “Vault Boy” and the “cards” (as I called them) showing him doing all the different things in humorous ways. By the way, he’s not the Pip Boy, the Pip Boy is the little guy on your Pip Boy interface. The Vault Boy was supposed to evoke the feel of Monopoly cards, and the Pip Boy was based on the Bob’s Big Boy mascot.[Non-game 1] Tim Cain has also stated that "Pipboy is the yellow and red caped character on the pip boy device."[Non-game 2]
  • Confusingly, the Atomic Shop in Fallout 76 calls him "Vault Boy 2000" despite the character being a mascot of RobCo, not Vault-Tec.[1] However, it should be noted that Design Director Emil Pagliarulo stated that the status of many purchasable objects in the shop do not strictly confine to established lore and canon, as the internal rules for what can be placed in the Atomic Shop are very loose. Some items may have conflicting status within the lore, but are placed in the Atomic Shop because of their "fun factor."[Non-game 3]
  • Vault Seller's Survival Guide episode "Meet Me in Coswald!" is the first time that the Vault Boy and Pip-Boy mascots are seen interacting with each other (as well as with several other corporate mascots).

  3. Fallout 76: Is the Atomic Shop or Creation Club considered canon?:
Emil Pagliarulo: "Atomic Shop is a lot...we found that Atomic Shop tends to not be canon so much, it's a lot looser. Just because it's, y'know, stuff that you purchase or use Atoms get into your game that is, like... there's a big fun factor there. There's a lot of stuff in Atomic Shop that we could take out because it's not strictly Fallout canon, and then players would be bummed. Because it's in a live multiplayer game, you... it's always a judgement call, it's tough. There's a lot of stuff that's... the canon rules are a lot lighter with the Atomic Shop stuff. Because we want people to have what they want and just have fun."
