Today is a fun day, for important format basics in wiki editing. For me, I had a lot of trial and error before I did them correctly. Hopefully reading through this will cut down on the amount you have to learn in this fashion.

Article format basics[]

Sections, paragraphs, lists and lines[]

What it looks like What you type

Start your sections as follows:

New section

Subsection

Sub-subsection

  • Start with a second-level heading (==); do not use first-level headings (=).
  • Do not skip levels (e.g., second-level followed by fourth-level).
  • A Table of Contents will automatically be added to an article that has four or more sections.

Sub-subsection
  • To remove a table of contents
  • To place the table on contents in a different place
__NOTOC__

You can break lines
without starting a new paragraph.

  • Please use this sparingly.

  • Lists are easy to do:
    • Start every line with a star.
      • More stars mean deeper levels.
  • An empty line starts a new list.

A colon indents a line or paragraph.

A manual newline starts a new paragraph.

  • This is primarily for displayed material but is also used for discussion on Talk pages.

Centered text

A horizontal dividing line: this is above it

and this is below it.

  • Mainly useful for separating threads on Talk pages.
  • Also used to disambiguate within an article without creating a separate page.

Links and URLs[]

What it looks like What you type

Kate really loves editing the wiki.

  • A link to another wiki article.
  • First letter of first word can be decapped with no impact on link.
Kate really loves editing the wiki.

Kate likes to wear party hats.

  • Same target, using a vertical link.
  • This is a piped link.
  • Required with links that have parenthesis in the article title or some plurals.
Kate likes to wear party hats.

Kate dislikes giant rats.

  • Endings are blended into the link.
  • Preferred style is to use this instead of a piped link for plurals.

Fallout 5: Kate's Revenge is a page that doesn't exist yet.

  • You can create it by clicking on the link (but please don't do so with this particular link).

Fallout Wiki:The Vault Academy 2.0/TVA/Format basics is this page.

  • If you link to the article you are on, they appear as bold text.
  • Do not use this technique to make the article name bold in the first paragraph
  • Redirect one article title to another by placing a directive like the one shown to the right on the first line of the article (such as at a page titled "FEV"). Make sure to add once completed. Remove the space between "redirect" and "#."
# REDIRECT Forced Evolutionary Virus
  • To put an article in a Category, place a link like the one to the right at the bottom of the page.

  • To link to a Category page without putting the article into the category, use an initial colon (:) in the link.
:Category:Perks

Avoiding overlinking is important. Each article should have a link to another article only once. The exception would be for in the notable loot section, where locations can be linked again.

Hiding things[]

There is a way that you can add things to articles without it showing up, which is helpful for leaving notes to other editors or preparing things for future updates. The code looks like this:

<!--enter text here-->

I usually add it with an under construction template (discussed later) to let people know I am working on something and not to barge in! Fun!

Nukapedia-specific editing[]

If your brain is too full, that is a good thing! I will not quiz you on the following articles, but I want you to read them, because it has Nukapedia-specific policies that are very important.
