Christopher Columbus (1451 – May 20, 1506) was an Italian explorer and colonizer who opened the New World to conquest and colonization in the 1490s and 1500s.
Background[]
Although he is popularly known as the "Discoverer of America," Columbus spent most of his time in the Caribbean and the coast of Central America during his four transatlantic voyages, including his most famous 1492 expedition, sponsored by the monarchs of Spain. Although it is a controversial subject, in the United States, he is honored with the holiday of Columbus Day in October.
