Brandon McDaniel was an electrical engineer at the Robotics Technology Facility RB-2851 prior to the Great War.

Background[]

Brandon thought that it would be exciting to sign up and work for the robotics program. This excitement quickly waned when he learned about his new assignment, which was as he put it, "babysitting a bunch of generators." He debated quitting because of how demoralizing this job was and felt he was qualified for far more.[1]

One day after talking to Sharpley during a smoke break, he thought of a way to turn his isolation into an advantage. He had a friend in the civilian service who worked for an unspecified vending company, and Brandon thought that he could make some money if he stuck one of his friend's cigarette machines in his station, reasoning that it would save everyone a trip all the way to the surface if they were out of smokes. It also gave Brandon an excuse to say hello to any of the ladies that happened to wander in to purchase some.[2]

Although he was able to carefully sneak a machine into his substation, a coworker – Banks at Substation B – began complaining about the smoke coming from his station. At first, Brandon thought he was just jealous that all of the ladies had been hanging around him at the new, unofficial smoking lounge. However, Banks told Brandon that he was going to lodge a formal complaint with Delano if he didn't "make him happy." Brandon contemplated paying him off to avoid punishment.[3]

Brandon then had a turn of fortune, getting official approval to keep the cigarette machine in his substation This, however, was due to him bribing General Rawlings with a few cartons himself.[4]
