A bat is a pre-War creature that lived in Appalachia .
Background [ ] Bats that lived before the war utilized echolocation on a limited scale.[1] Chiroptera species of bats were exposed to biochemical tests conducted in the Enclave bunker , mutating into creatures known as scorchbeasts .[2] Ella Ames makes the hypothesis that these creatures evolved from pygmy bats and may have carried forward pre-War variant sonar and echolocation traits.[1] [3]
Former Cutthroats member Carol Sweeney writes about these evolved creatures in their journal, stating that on their way to scavenge in Big Bend Tunnel East , they saw giant bats flying out the ground.[4] Claire Hudson also comments on "huge mutated bats that poison the ground."[5]
