To further add on to
PureNerd's reply, and having thought about this a few times now, I thought I'd bring up a couple of tweaks that I think most skinners would appreciate:
- No imposed lighting. We spend so much time working with and tweaking colours/contrast, but artificially darkening the model can seriously undermine that intent. I think this significantly improves the overall clarity, also.
- Ditch the isometric view for a lower y-axis angle. The current one results in the head obscuring far too much of the torso, which is kind of the core part of a design for many skins, much more-so than the top of the head or shoulders in all likelihood.
I've done a mock-up just to quickly demonstrate these tweaks (as well as facing the skin inwards, which is entirely subjective, but I think looks nicer compositionally)
This is very consistent with how many us already make our own 3D previews to share, and I believe it retains the dynamic look of the current 3D approach without diminishing any artistic choices.
In any case, thanks for taking the time to read!

Updating The HD Skin Preview To 2D
I know you guys are busy updating the site right now, and this isn’t a priority, but I'm hoping it could possibly be a quicker implementation if you wanted to add it. Maybe even just an edit of the old code since really the only difference from the standard player preview is the scale. Things are never that easy though haha.
Using ThatGuyJake's most recent skin as my example to look at the difference:
