Marching towards “Mentoring A Million” – Honoured to give a talk on innovation at Unisys Innovation Day! Last week, I gave a keynote at Unisys Innovation Day, attended by 500 people from academia, industry, and Unisys associates. Unisys organizes a Technology Innovation contest for students across India called Unisys Innovation Program (UIP). UIP has had over 90,000 students register and submit more than 6000 abstracts from across 2000+ institutions. The top three teams were selected and honored. It is an impressive program indeed. My talk on “Achieving Success through Innovation”, for individuals and companies. Unisys distributed my book “Achieving Meaningful Success: Unleash the power of ME!” to all attendees and many employees. In my book, in one of the chapters, I cover how one can develop innovation skills. In my life’s journey, I consider innovation, my 6 US patents, among some of my biggest achievements. I strongly believe, ‘Innovation is a skill, a combination of art, science, and creativity that individuals and companies can learn.’ Through innovation, we can make a positive difference to ourselves, our companies, our country, and the world :). I am in this spree of soul searching, setting goals, for which I have to thank the infectious energy of Archana Dutta and Neha Kirpalani. I have been trying a series of journal prompts. The first one is my first principle of any clarity exercise : What would I do, how would I fill my time and attention with, if all my needs were met? And most importantly, there was no one, absolutely no one to witness me - not to criticise, but more importantly - nor anyone to applaud and validate? What would I do? The list is below. Accenture has appointed Arnab Chakraborty as its first chief responsible AI officer. Chakraborty, a leader in Accenture's data and AI practice, brings over two decades of expertise and holds 10 patents in machine learning solutions. With this appointment, Accenture aims to expand its responsible AI capabilities and help clients build AI responsibly. The company plans to provide advisory and technology services, introduce managed services for compliance, invest in gen AI testing capabilities, and focus on education and empowerment through responsible AI academies. Accenture will also extend its research partnerships and advocate for responsible AI standards and governance. IBM Consulting's leadership is undergoing a change as John Granger hands over the reins to Mohamad Ali and Kelly Chambliss. While this news has left many with mixed feelings, let me take a moment to reflect on my three thoughtful interactions with John ... starting from the times when he had a brief stint living in India around 2016-17. This is my tribute to him. #1: John would review each Sector every quarter. My first review with him in 2016 was a disaster. The remote telepresence equipment failed for unknown reasons, the landline phone would not connect, and finally I had to present over a mobile phone speaker with poor audio. I ensured my next few reviews were f2f in Bengaluru, but more importantly, those reviews truly shaped me up for C-level story boarding and pitches. When John learnt I was traveling at my own cost to meet him f2f for the reviews, he immediately instructed that my travels be reimbursed ... very thoughtful of him. #2: John saw me in action in 2017 during a client's CIO meeting he and I had in Delhi for a new logo opportunity with a global enterprise. So, later when I met him at his NYC office late in 2018 and expressed my aspirations towards a leadership role in the US, he supported me wholeheartedly and entrusted our global HR leader Daniel Sturm to work this thru with the US market. While this opportunity progressed, my current role in the Philippines opened up suddenly and I immediately picked it up. Soon, John connected me to the US Sector leader of an account in trouble and asked him to work with me as ... (in his words) ... "Sanjiv can solve anything". That was truly inspiring. #3: There are two people I would openly credit for my progression to an IBM Senior Partner ... Amit Sharma and John Granger. When I met John f2f right after and thanked him, his reaction was like brushing it aside stating he hardly did anything and rather "I earned it" with what I had been doing for IBM's Center in the Philippines. Coming from someone of John's stature, these were truly defining moments of my IBM career. There is a tremendous opportunity for AI to help solve some of our planet’s biggest challenges. With world economies, including a digital India embracing a proliferation of data; do not have to be at odds with a sustainable transition. The key question - how can sustainability goals be met while storing and extracting value from ever-growing data? The best path forward is not an ‘either/or’ scenario.   I share my thoughts on how organisations can gain more control over data energy consumption while leveraging the benefits of AI to track and analyse data, resulting in more sustainable operations. Actual Units of Value: Refocusing Healthcare To achieve better outcomes, we must shift incentives from the Relative Value Unit (RVU) to a more person- and outcome-centric approach, prioritizing Actual Units of Value (AUV). US healthcare should provide the best value (outcomes/cost), yet despite having the highest per capita spending since the 1980s, our national health outcomes rank much lower. The issue isn't cost but the value achieved. Commercial "best practices" are based upon underlying incentives. Many efforts to improve outcomes and reduce costs have failed, including EHR and value-based care initiatives, possibly because they were designed around the wrong incentives. Implemented in 1992, RVUs measure procedure/service costs and values volume and level of effort. Designed for billing and reimbursement, it fails to capture healthcare's most important elements: well-being, outcomes, patient and staff satisfaction, and system resiliency. Focusing on ACTUAL VALUE would emphasize elements valued by patients (timely access, collaboration, empowerment) and staff (rewarding work, fulfillment) to create desired outcomes. If incentives were aligned with AUV creation, decisions, actions, and acquisitions would prioritize delivering value and foster a culture pursuing excellence. To fix a problem, the root cause must be addressed. Any fix must address how the whole system works - Every system gives the results it was designed to produce based upon how it was built, implemented, governed, and utilized. Improving value requires review of outcomes, costs, and decision-making, including health payment policy and incentives. Adopting Actual Units of Value in system design incentivizes acts that truly impact people's lives. Instead of pursuing counts, we can prioritize compassionate, evidence-based yet personalized care. While transitioning to an AUV-centric approach would take time, using AUV thinking can have an immediate impact in your organization without affecting the current bottom line. We can create a more responsive, efficient, and rewarding system for patients and staff. Collaborating with stakeholders to define and implement AUV measures will accelerate a cultural shift. Instead of debating whether virtual or in-office care should be reimbursed equally, the discussion can move to VALUE from activity. Federal healthcare is best positioned to lead this change while addressing access, military readiness, quality, cost (including network care), and efficiencies so more patient can be cared for in the direct care system. It's time to embrace change, redefine value, and reconsider incentives. Lack of focus more than resources has hindered achieving value and ROI. Current and commercial “best” practices should be scrutinized using a outcomes-based, data driven approach and systems thinking.
