The Academy was an elite, four-year secondary school in the Capitol for the children of the wealthy and powerful.[1]

Administration[]

Dean Casca Highbottom oversaw the school. The Academy provided students with free meals and uniforms for daily use, though they were required to finance their own clothing for special events.[1]

Uniform[]

The Academy-issued uniform was not described in The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes novel, but it was noted as including underwear and socks.[1] In the film adaptation, uniforms consisted of a light blue dress shirt, a red jacket in a shade that Lucky Flickerman identified as "Academy rouge", and a golden pin of the Academy's logo. Regardless of gender, all students wore red skirts over their matching red trousers.[2]

Academic standing[]

At graduation in midsummer, the Academy presented monetary prizes to high-performing students. Those students who performed well at the Academy often went on to attend higher education at the University.[1]

During the 10th Hunger Games, the Academy's top 24 students were selected to mentor tributes from the twelve districts. This was used as a means to make citizens of the Capitol more interested in the Games.[1] However, the program resulted in the deaths of four students, so it was discontinued once the Games concluded that year. The Head Gamemaker, Dr. Volumnia Gaul, considered it a catastrophic and embarrassing failure.[9]

Disciplinary action[]

Students at the Academy who committed serious infractions might receive a demerit. Three such demerits would result in a student's expulsion.[3] The Academy had a tradition of offering expelled students a lifeline. For Coriolanus Snow, this came in the form of an offer to join the Peacekeepers for a twenty-year-term, as an alternative to public disgrace.[10] However, after being expelled, Snow received a diploma indicating he had graduated with high honors, which Sejanus Plinth made a condition of accepting his own offer to join the Peacekeepers after he was expelled as well. Having an Academy diploma allowed Snow to take the Peacekeeper officer test[11] and later to enroll at the University after Dr. Gaul arranged for his honorable discharge from the Peacekeepers.[9]

Campus[]

The Academy had a gathering area called Heavensbee Hall, which hosted events such as viewing the districts' reapings.[1] The high biology lab hosted the mentors' meetings with Dr. Gaul,[6] and there were at least fourteen other classrooms, since they were able to accommodate 14 different mentor-tribute pairs as they prepared for their interviews.[12]
