Mouse is a creature type which first appeared on tokens in Throne of Eldraine.

Description[ | ]

The type depicts small rodents with a pointed snout, relatively large ears and eyes, and a long tail. In essence, they are the white aligned counterparts to black aligned rats, as animals not traditionally thought of as "mice" (like jerboas) are included in the type, implying theme is more important than phylogeny.

History[ | ]

This creature type came into being only because the Enchanted Carriage needed white Mice for flavor. R&D talked about whether the card should make Rat or Squirrel tokens, but ultimately decided in favor of mice.[2]

The Mouse type returned as a non-token creature in Zendikar Rising with Canyon Jerboa.[3]

In the lead up to Bloomburrow, R&D began seeding a small number of Mouse cards in Wilds of Eldraine.[4] In both sets the Mouse type is {R}{W}-aligned and in Bloomburrow they make up a limited typal archetype for this color combination.[5]

Storyline[ | ]

Bloomburrow[ | ]

Mousefolk are one of the animalfolk of Bloomburrow.[6] They are the closest natural allies of the Birdfolk. They are plucky, loyal seekers of adventure and glory. Some of them are Soldiers, members of the legendary Order of the Holly Leaf. Mousefolk have large interconnected families. There are not many problems that mousefolk can't overcome together.

At their best, mousefolk are brave and loyal go-getters. At their worst, mousefolk are naïve and irresponsible.[7]

One of the mousefolk, Mabel, assembled a rag-tag group of warriors and misfits to defend Valley against the Calamity Beasts.[8] Long ago, her possible ancestor Lily of the Valley, also repelled the Calamity Beasts.

Eldraine[ | ]

Mice of Eldraine are non-sentient critters mostly found in households and castles. They are known for their cheekiness, being prone, whenever they get a chance, to steal food — or even cursed rings from witches. Unassuming in nature, some dignified mice help dwarves to sustain their armories squeaky-clean, and some have helped to repel the Assault on Delverhaugh.
