Vasily Vasilyevich Dokuchaev (March 1, 1846 – November 8, 1903) was a Russian geologist and geographer.
Background[]
Dokuchaev was born in Milyukovo, Smolensk Governorate. He was perhaps the first person to make wide geographical investigations of different soil types and also established a classification scheme describing five factors in soil formation based on his investigations of Russian soils. These contributions have led to him being credited as the father of soil science. Between 1869 and 1901, he published a total of 285 works, including 61 books and 4 maps.

Dr. Bethy Mangano, an edaphologist, credits Dokuchaev as being the "father of soil science." In particular, she mentions his work on geographical variations in soil as well as his system for classifying soils.[1]
