A muzzle-loaded weapon which fired .58 caliber "minie ball" percussion caps instead of the traditional flintlock, the rifle was the standard weapon for infantry soldiers in the American Civil War.[1] Almost a million of these weapons were manufactured for the conflict.[1]
It was displayed as part of a museum exhibit on loan from the International Ordnance Museum at the Museum of Technology in Washington D.C. alongside weapons and ammunition used by the military in past conflicts all over the globe.[1]
