will someone tell me why they have straps in their mouths?

Duct tape?[]
In fallout new vegas almost all of the super mutants have some...kinda duct tape in their mouths, but why? i think only marcus doesn't have it.
I can say that it's a leather strap and it holds up the upper lip...why they need it...no one seems to know. Most the muties from Fallout 1, 2 and New Vegas have them, fallout 3 seems to be the exception (those muties considered a different batch than the Mariposa in canon though)
Conjecture[]
I don't know if there will ever be an actual answer, but here is my conjecture on the subject:
Super mutants heal much faster than anything else of human stock, and they have big, presumably sharp (they have been shown eating brahmin and bighorners without any tools) teeth. It's theoretically possibly that if they big their lips open accidentally, that they could heal together, making their mouths have to be operated on (probably crudely) to fix them.
It's also possible that it's there to assist in speech. Super mutants pretty much have all of the speech impediments that exist, but some noticable ones are: stuttering (what the restraint thing might be there to try and correct) dysarthria (weakness/paralysis of speech related muscles, usually caused by brain damage) aphraxia (inability to properly pronounce words)
Both are possible, either way, I'd say it was an improvised solution based off of 1950's medical 'knowledge' as opposed to a more modern, effective method. -NemFX (talk) 02:25, December 10, 2012 (UTC)
