However, there may be a slight inconsistency concerning the existence of pre-war motor vehicles at the Red Rocket sites; before the Great War, petroleum was all but absent from existence, yet parked cars seem to surround these refueling stations. The only explanation that I could come up with as to explain this is that people had driven to the "Red Rocket" station to steal fuel, but were chased off by (possibly armed) store workers. --Danswiki

Also, another inconsistency with the petroleum-based fuel theory is that the car models are supposedly fission-powered; when supplied with enough damage, the cars erupt in the usual mushroom cloud identical to that of a Mini-Nuke animation. This may have been corner-cutting on Bethesda's part, or simply an honest mistake. --Danswiki

You can also notice a small warning notice at ground level near the refueling tube. caution flammable spirit petroleum. So it look like it's still deliver petroleum rather than fusion services. --Doulifee

can u explode them?

if you have done the the An Antique Land quest in point lookout yo the the primary fuel source is natural gas but the fuel statios appear to have nuclear reactors below them what does that mean?

could it be refrencing a dog's red rocket???

I would say that it could be a little joke at a dog's red rocket. Also isn't it possible that these were from before the resource wars, and that the cars might have pulled there simply to get off the streets as the bombs fell?
