The Sierra Nevadas are a mountain range in the former American state of California. They both appear and are mentioned multiple times in the Fallout series.

Background[]

Cutting through the landscape of California, even years after the nuclear apocalypse, many massive sequoia trees are still found growing on the mountain range.[1]

In the early months of their trek across the country to reestablish contact with the Appalachian chapter of the Brotherhood of Steel, the Brotherhood First Expeditionary Force encountered a group of raiders who had captured other Brotherhood members within the mountain range. Matthew Thornberry rescued them from torture and left the expeditionary force to escort the rescued Brothers back to Lost Hills.[2]

In 2155, after a one-sided extermination by the Brotherhood of Steel from Lost Hills, many of the surviving members of the Vipers raider tribe fled into the Sierra Nevada range and beyond,[Non-game 1] into the Mojave Wasteland where they would remain a present, but ultimately minor threat for decades to come.[3]

Sometime around the late 2270s, with raiders still a lingering threat in the region, the New California Republic moved to create peace and used the former site of Owen's Lake as a staging ground to drive out all the tribes on the eastern side of the Sierra Nevadas.[4]

Appearances[]

The Sierra Nevada Mountains appear in Fallout and Fallout 2. They are mentioned in Fallout: New Vegas and the Fallout 76 update Steel Dawn.

Fallout Bible 6, page 83: "Near Extermination by the Brotherhood of Steel in 2155: One Brotherhood squad found the Vipers, and during the firefight, John Maxson's father (who was leading the squad) was killed with a poisoned arrow. The response from the Brotherhood was immediate. The Paladins, now led by Rhombus, began a full scale campaign against the Vipers, tracking them down and wiping out almost all of their members within the span of a month. A handful of Vipers were able to flee north and east into the mountain range, but they were never heard from again."
