Meriwether Lewis (August 18, 1774 – October 11, 1809) was an American explorer, soldier and politician, best known as a leader of the famous Lewis and Clark Expedition.
Background[]
Lewis was selected by President Thomas Jefferson alongside William Clark to lead an expedition charting the Louisiana Territory, as well as make contact with Native Americans in the Midwest and claim the West Coast for the United States before any European nation could.

- The Pioneer Scouts cite Lewis and President Jefferson as examples to look up to in their Pioneerbook's "foreward."[1]
- Lewis and Clark are also mentioned in a question in the Rail Enthusiast exam at the Pioneer Scout camp. "To search for Lewis and Clark" is listed as an incorrect answer to a question about why building a transcontinental railroad was important for the United States.[2]
