Matty is the brother of Julie, the DJ of Appalachia Radio.[1]

Matty was left behind in Washington, D.C., when Julie travelled west with Paige and the Settlers to Appalachia.[1] Matty enjoyed Fats Waller's "Ain't Misbehavin'," finding the song funny. He is jokingly implied to not to be able to get along with his sister, for long enough to sing a single song.[2]
