The Gobi Desert (Chinese: 戈壁沙漠) is a mentioned-only location in Fallout: New Vegas and the Fallout 76 update Expeditions: The Pitt.

Background[]

Before the Great War, it served as the setting of the Gobi Campaign during the Sino-American War. The conflict involved ground troops and United States Air Force fighter jets.[1] Scout rifles bearing three-tone desert camouflage were utilized during the campaign, one of which was left intact and eventually ended up being stored in a sniper's nest in the Mojave Wasteland sometime around 2281.[2]

Appearances[]

The Gobi Desert is mentioned in Fallout: New Vegas and the Fallout 76 update Expeditions: The Pitt.

Behind the scenes[]

The real-world Gobi Desert is a large rain shadow desert in Asia, bounded by the Altai Mountains and the steppes of Mongolia at its northern end, the Tibetan Plateau and the Gangsu Corridor to the southwest, and the North China Plain and Yin Mountains to the southeast. The Plateau blocks precipitation from the Indian Ocean reaching the desert and creating its arid conditions.

Lennox: "Knew a fighter pilot. Long gone, but he was a livewire. Told me once about getting caught in a sandstorm over the Gobi. He was flying formation with three other jets when it hit. Came outta nowhere, he said. He ejected - storm messed him up good, but he lived. When the storm cleared, though, his wingmen were just...gone. Nobody ever saw them again, nobody ever found the planes. Desert just swallowed them up."
