I have nothing against people wanting to pretty up their signatures, but the signatures with oversized images are getting a bit out of hand recently. Using images is fine, but leaving a thumbnail on every talk page you contribute to or using images in a size that make your entries 4 times as large as necessary is just annoying for others. I propose an addition to the user conduct guideline to reign these in, but I'd like to hear other opinions first. -- Porter21 (talk) 17:16, May 5, 2010 (UTC)

Agreed on my part. Ausir(talk) 17:47, May 5, 2010 (UTC)
Agreed. As far as limits go, I think Grizzly's sigs are a decent rule of thumb. Not so big as to be annoying, but certainly fun enough to satisfy.--Gothemasticator 17:58, May 5, 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, a height limit of 16px for sig images sounds reasonable, it's about the height of a normal line. For width I'd set 40-50px as the limit. Only one image per signature, and the thumb and frame options should be off-limits. These are my suggestions anyway, feel free to make/add your own :) -- Porter21 (talk) 18:21, May 5, 2010 (UTC)
This is partially my fault, I've been making signature's for people lately, but I didn't know that the image size was a problem. Sorry! Nukey - (Speak to me!!!)

Don't worry about it, Nukey. We haven't had a policy about this, so you weren't doing anything wrong. :) --Gothemasticator 18:38, May 5, 2010 (UTC)
Agreed, it needs to stop. Shadowrunner56 21:28, May 5, 2010 (UTC)
I think the oversized sigs are annoying as well. No offense Nukey, the one you made for me is visually appealing, but I didn't realize how much space it would take up for one entry/section on a forum or similiar page. So, I believe the margins should be: height = 16px, and width = 30px, at the most. The only one that really bothered me was Enclave13's, namely because his sig was about 44 pixels in height (User_talk:Ghouly89/Archive 1). Ghouly89 (Talk) 06:42, May 6, 2010 (UTC)

No worries, Nukey - there are plenty of people who have used oversized images in the past, it's not really a new issue (it just got a little more pronounced recently). Anyhow, seems like we primarily need to settle on the width limit. A little illustration below as the raw px sizes are a little abstract (height 16px). Pick your poison :) -- Porter21 (talk) 14:18, May 6, 2010 (UTC)

When I was looking up how to make a signature I came accross the WOWWiki's page on the subject. It says no more than 22 pixels tall for images. Maybe their text formatting is different, though?

Metalspork talk  contribs 19:01, May 6, 2010 (UTC)

Well, anything above 16px causes the line to be higher than normal, at least if you haven't selected increased font-sizes in your browser. 22px is slightly higher than a normal line, but not so much as to cause too much distortion (which is what the WoWWiki page is referring to). That said, I wouldn't be opposed to making the height limit 20px, if only to have a round number. -- Porter21 (talk) 21:35, May 6, 2010 (UTC)
Bumping this up because the poll expires tomorrow and we're currently at stalemate. -- Porter21 (talk) 17:37, May 12, 2010 (UTC)

I wonder how Shadowrunner, Nitty and Ghouly would feel about it if we moved ahead with implementing 40px as max width? You guys care to weigh in?--Gothemasticator 04:35, May 13, 2010 (UTC)

I have no objection, it would have been my second choice ;) Ghouly89 (Talk) 21:11, May 13, 2010 (UTC)
Good. Unless Shadowrunner or Nitty voice objections, I'll add the new signature image limit to the guideline on Sunday. -- Porter21 (talk) 19:29, May 14, 2010 (UTC)
I'm ok with this. Shadowrunner56 20:12, May 14, 2010 (UTC)
I think a 40px max is pretty good. Nukey - talk 20:16, May 14, 2010 (UTC)

The Vault:User conduct guideline#Talk and forum pages has been updated with the following:

  • Avoid using obtrusive signatures: Custom signatures which are obtrusive, annoying or unnecessarily large should be avoided as they detract from the purpose of talk and forum pages. A signature should not affect surrounding text to a great extent. Only one image is allowed per signature, and it must be no larger than 40 pixels in width and 20 pixels in height. Using the "thumb" or "frame" options is forbidden.

If you'd rather have 16px as height limit, please speak up. We didn't really finish that discussion, so I simply went for the "round" number. -- Porter21 (talk) 21:32, May 16, 2010 (UTC)

I'm just glad the word obtrusive has made it onto our wiki. 20px high is fine with me.--Gothemasticator 06:52, May 17, 2010 (UTC)
I'll go for 20px as well. 16 is a little small to make out some images anyway. Ghouly89 (Talk) 07:07, May 17, 2010 (UTC)
20px sounds good enough for a signature. Shadowrunner56 10:51, June 4, 2010 (UTC)
