Proposed layouts[]
Standard layout[]
This is the standard layout for all location articles except settlement and district ones. Make sure the sections are in the order given (omitting ones which are not needed in the specific article).
Standard layout | ||
---|---|---|
Section headline | required? | Content |
Infobox and games template. | ||
Small paragraph which contains the following bits of information:
| ||
Background | If there's any background story/history for the location. | |
Layout | Describe the layout for each section: what it looks like, connections to the other sections, how many and what type of enemy can be found here. Make a subsection for each zone of the location, titled with the ingame name of the zone. Start with a section called "Exterior" where you describe the entrance area. Mention if there is a bed or workbench in a section. The basic premise is that the section should give someone who has not seen the location an idea of what it looks like and how it is set up. | |
Notable loot | List unique and rare loot here with a short description of where to find it. | |
Related quests | If there are quests which start or take place in this location, list them here (just link them, no need to go into detail). | |
Notes | For interesting things about the location which do not fit into the other categories. Try to keep this section to a minimum. | |
Appearances | Which games this location appears in. | |
Behind the scenes | For out-of-game references and similar stuff. | |
Bugs | For bugs which are unique to this location. General game bugs and bugs which are related to NPCs or quests in this location should not be in the location article (they should be in the general bugs or character/quest pages instead). | |
Gallery | Cluttering the article with too many images should be avoided. Instead, place them in a gallery at the end if applicable. |

Settlement/district layout[]
This is for settlements and districts. Make sure the sections are in the order given (omitting ones which are not needed in the specific article).
Settlement/district layout | ||
---|---|---|
Section headline | required? | Content |
Infobox and games template. | ||
Small paragraph which contains the following bits of information:
| ||
Background | If there is any background story/history for the location. | |
Layout | General description of the location's layout. If the settlement/district is split into multiple zones, describe each of them here and which buildings are located in each. Describe what it looks like, connections to the outside world, how many and what type of enemy can be found here (if there are any). Make a subsection for each zone of the location, titled with the ingame name of the zone. Mention if there are beds or workbenches in a section. The basic premise is that the section should give someone who has not seen the location an idea of what it looks like and how it is set up. | |
Buildings | Buildings/other locations in the settlement/district which can be entered (list) | |
Inhabitants | The town's inhabitants (list). For districts, this only needs to be present if there are named non-hostile NPCs living in the area. Hostiles should be described in the Layout section. | |

Gallery | Cluttering the article with too many images should be avoided. Instead, place them in a gallery at the end if applicable. |

Comments[]
These are basically my layouts from the FO3 locations project, aren't they? It's a bit hard to spot whether something's been modified :) I think they're pretty much generally applicable but I might be a bit biased there. I don't really see FO3-specifc stuff there though. -- Porter21 (talk) 08:27, 15 August 2009 (UTC)
- Yeah, these are mostly your layouts without the FO3-specific stuff. So this won't really impact the FO3 location project. Ausir(talk) 15:52, 15 August 2009 (UTC)
I think Appearances should be closer to the beginning or at the very end of the article. It doesn't make sense to me for it to be towards the middle of the article. ~ HAZMAT82 20:15, 15 August 2009 (UTC)
- I also think it should be moved to the end of the article, after bugs but before gallery. That's where I always placed it myself. Ausir(talk) 03:18, 16 August 2009 (UTC)
- I disagree. Especially in FO3 articles the Bugs sections occasionally get very extensive and they are simply of no interest to some people (like myself). I don't want to have scroll past a page of useless crap just to get to appearances. -- Porter21 (talk) 06:21, 16 August 2009 (UTC)
- I see what you mean, although I think it's current location isn't the best. But does it really even need it's own section? (After all, it's only a sentence.) It could be added to the infobox, or into the first introductory paragraph. For example, for a location, "(NAME) is a (SIZE) (LOCATION) inhabited by (FACTION), and contains (#) (SECTIONS). It appears in (GAME(S))." ~ HAZMAT82 07:34, 16 August 2009 (UTC)
- Well, for some locations it's only a single sentence but for some it is more extensive - for the latter, it'd bloat the introductory section way too much in my opinion. For example, take The Pitt (city) or Commonwealth. For locations which are alluded to in a multitude of games/add-ons, you can't feasibly add it to the infobox either since you need to describe how they were mentioned etc. -- Porter21 (talk) 07:41, 16 August 2009 (UTC)
- I see what you mean. Perhaps after background then? Then the article would have the introduction, then the background on the subject, then where it appears, followed by all the other sections. All the other sections are very specific as to what the location is like, what it contains, etc., whereas the introduction, background, and appearances sections provide a broader overview of the location. I wish I could describe what I mean better, but I can't think of how to put it into words. >_< I hope you understand what I mean though. ~ HAZMAT82 07:57, 16 August 2009 (UTC)
- Background is fairly specific as well in my opinion. For me, appearances is the finishing point of the "meat" of an article; out of game references (i.e. Trivia), bugs and galleries are like "addendum" sections from my point of view. Which is why I chose the current order. -- Porter21 (talk) 12:00, 16 August 2009 (UTC)

Buildings[]
Starting to wonder whether we really need a seperate layout for these; for FO3 locations the only real difference between building and the standard "dungeon" layout is in the infobox ("inside" parameter and not needing a map marker image). Instead, I think we need a layout for districts (like The Mall); although they could probably be seen as a subcategory of settlements minus the inhabitants sections. Opinions? -- Porter21 (talk) 11:57, 16 August 2009 (UTC)
