United States Department of Commerce was a pre-War department of the United States government. The Department of Commerce was a federal executive department responsible for promoting national economic growth, and collecting statistical data on the country's population and industries.

Background[]

The Bureau of the Census, a division of the department tasked with producing data about the American people and economy, appears in Fallout 76. Like many other facets of the Appalachian government, the census bureau of West Virginia was automated. Census takers were sent out into the Cranberry Bog region to tally its population.[1]

Herbert Hoover was appointed the United States Secretary of Commerce on March 5th, 1921 by President Harding. He would continue to fulfill the role under President Coolidge, before running as a presidential nominee in 1928 and becoming the 31st president.[2][3]

The Secretary of Commerce was supposed to take shelter in the Congressional Bunker alongside the other members of Congress and the President's Cabinet. However, they were removed from the Cabinet Nuclear Alarm system in questionable circumstances, left to fend for themselves in the face of the Great War.[4]

Appearances[]

The Department of Commerce is mentioned only in Fallout 76.
