Chester Alan Arthur (October 5, 1829 — November 18, 1886) was the 21st President of the United States of America, serving from 1881 to 1885. Prior to his presidency, he was an attorney and public figure in the state of New York.
Background[]
During much of his political career, Arthur was a member of the more conservative Stalwart wing of the Republican Party. In the 1880 presidential election, Arthur was nominated as vice president by his party to balance the ticket with their presidential candidate James A. Garfield, who was part of the more progressive Half-Breed wing.
When Garfield was assassinated in 1881, Arthur became president and was inspired by his predecessor to adopt more Half-Breed ideals, continuing to push the Pendleton Civil Service Reform Act, outlawing the practice of nominating government officials based on political favorism rather than merit. Arthur made little effort to be renominated by the Republican Party in 1884, and died a year after his retirement.
