Rutkowski was in a relationship with Kathryn Montgomery, a U.S. Army sergeant who was accused of being a Chinese spy and referred to as "Shanghai Sally" in the news media. In order to vouch for his partner, on the morning of July 15, 2072, Rutkowski went to the Berkeley Springs police precinct with a copy of the Charleston Herald article about Shanghai Sally. He spoke with Officer R. Miles, showing them that the woman in the picture wasn't a Chinese spy, but his partner Kathryn, who had been missing for three weeks.[1]
